Richard, we call him Dick, McFarland had many, many , many issues in his life.  All of them bad and dumb.  He could not keep a job due to his dumbness, he was considered a total weirdo by everyone, he was addicted to Freezy Pops, and his wife was missing.  Dick was too dumb to help himself or the police. Thank goodness Palmer, Texas Ranger comes in to save the day.  His white cowboy hat and lack of any personality are just what this complicated case needs.
