Already this week the Plant Society has begun it's talks and next Wednesday will start off the Field Nats talks. Buffel Beats are continuing on Fridays from 7am - join the fun vibe! Alice Springs Cinema General Manager René Sutton was back on 8CCC Brekky Show with news about the Travelling Film Festival 27 Feb - 2 Mar and how best to organise your tickets. The earlier the better so that any sold out shows get a chance to show on another screen too. Girls' Night Out this Friday is the classic Wuthering Heights with all the usual prizes and goodies.

What a year it has been for Mparntwe Alice Springs – and that’s just the first month!

Once Mayor Asta Hill announced she would not be attending the Citizenship ceremony on 26 Jan,  much noise and action erupted in our community and resulted in a vibrant to overflowing attendance at the first Town Council for 2026. The socials were running almost as hot as the gruelling 40+ degree days that have ushered in the year, yet the proceedings went ahead with calm and respect and everyone agreed that the Citizenship Ceremony had been a great success and thanked Deputy Mayor Alison Bitar for officiating. One question time participant asked, "...doesn't the Mayor's stance show more consideration to ALL members of her community no matter what opinion they have on this issue?"

Contrary to the mood in the room, a petition for the Alice Springs Mayor to resign had been set in motion and the Speaker of the NT Govt later went on the airwaves  of Mix 104.9 to announce that  ‘compliments of the Greens mayor, we now have a community split in half.” “…they got there early, they took all the seats- 70 Greens representatives and about 10 people  there to protest against the mayor. Robyn Lambley concludes that the Greens have taken over the Alice Springs Town Council.

Here the Mayor speaks to these comments and takes a moment to talk through her decision based on a crisis of conscience. Other meeting business included the Council's formal submission to the Northern Territory Government on the Draft Buffel Grass Weed Management Plan 2026–2036, and the progress into extending public library weekend hours.

'Nine heads of state have the ability to launch more than 12,500 nuclear weapons between them, threatening all life on this planet. The 2017 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the circuit breaker to the nuclear status quo. It is our best chance against our worst weapon.

ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of our work “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons” and our “ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons”.'

Following a decade of advocacy by ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) and its partners – an overwhelming majority of the world’s nations adopted a landmark global agreement to ban nuclear weapons, known officially as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It entered into force on 22 January 2021. 

There are currently 95 signatories and 74 states parties. [21 Jan 2025] 

Chansey Paech is currently the only NT MP who has signed the parliamentary pledge from 2017, which includes the signatures of Anthony Albanese, Malarndirri McCarthy and Marion Scrymgour to name a few.

Alice Ross, Coordinator at Bikes Mwerre, and Guido Verbist, General Manager of Revolve Recycling speak about their partnership, which will see 100 refurbished bicycles delivered to Alice Springs by the end of January, strengthening access to healthy, active and positive opportunities for young people.

Mayor Asta Hill spoke on the 8CCC Brekky Show about the opening of Newland Skate Park from 9am Friday 19 December. This month's town council meeting began with a tribute to Ted Egan AO by Cr Damian Ryan and a minute's silence. Some of the other items included the proposed Liquor Commission variation of licence conditions, the Todd Mall revitalisation and the petition to extend the Library hours over summer.

Owen Kelly, local architect and Director of Dogspike Design and Architecture wrapped up with a focus on the Todd Mall redevelopment. He introduced the 8CCC Brekky Show listeners into the concept of hardware, the buildings, roads, lighting etc and software or way people inhabit and utilise the spaces. There will be an article in the inaugural Regional Architecture Association journal Field in early 2026 about the successful Mparntwe architecture conference 2025.
