Local folk singer songwriter ad music therapist, Alison Mapleson, joins the Big Brekky after returning from the Top Half Folk Festival in Mary River, NT. She comes sharing news of a new project, 'Music in the Mall: Singing for the Soul', hosted with a friend Georgia. And as always, she treats us to some live music in the studio.

'Music in the Mall' is a laid-back event for everyone to come and share a song, sing/play along, or just listen and relax to a free music session. Held every Thursday evening during summer on the Flynn church lawns in The Mall from 6-8pm. BYO picnic blanket, snacks, an instrument, or just yourself.

Nicole Walsh, the Chief Operations Officer for the Northern Territory Chamber Of Commerce, joins The Big Brekky to talk about the independent association's services. Not a Government Department, the organisation supports Territory business across a wide range of sectors and disciplines, helping businesses grow and succeed in the Central Australian environment.

A part of this mission is to develop relationships, and the Chamber hosts regular Business at Sunset networking events. The first for 2024 is hosted by Saltbush Social Enterprises' on the 24th of January.

Veronica Larson, Executive Officer of Neighbourhood Watch NT, chats to The Big Brekky about the NT-wide comprehensive holiday safety campaign it launched in December, in collaboration with Territory Community Safety Coordination Centre (TCSCC).

The initiative aims to equip residents with preventative measures against opportunistic crimes. From now until March, Neighbourhood Watch NT is broadcasting community safety advertisements across the NT on Imparja, Channel 7, Central and Channel 7 Darwin, as well as social media. The organisation hopes to facilitate neighbourly connection and initiation of community safety groups.

FYI the TCSCC commenced in May 2023, and is a 'multi-agency capability' led by NT Police that works at a grass roots level to identify issues and provide 'coordinated wraparound services' for individuals and families that need support. TCSCC liaises with officers from Health, Education, Territory Families, Housing and Communities, Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Corporate and Digital Development, and Industry, Tourism and Trade, enabling centralised reporting up, down and across agencies.

Program Officer for the NT Writers Centre, Betty Sweetlove, fills us in on the upcoming January to April program.

The first workshop series for the year (beginning 31 Jan) is called Unravel: A Multi-Arts Approach to Writing, facilitated by local artist Emma Trenorden. The three week series introduces writers to arts-based methods for getting ‘unstuck’ and finding new perspectives on a creative concept. 

If you missed tickets to the sold out online event Story in Six Weeks with Mary Anne Butler, there is plenty more on offer such as the NT Writers' Centre and Red Kangaroo Books annual get-together, and a fully catered, self guided writing retreat at Campfire In The Heart.

The Centre continues to offer writing and feedback programs: The Sunday Writers Review (Darwin) and the Emerging Writers Group (Mparntwe/Alice Springs), and embarks on a new partnership with Centralian Senior College in the new Schools Writer-in-Residence program.
