Well, did you see the difference between “Shirimasen“ and ”Shirimasen deshita“?

“Shirimasen deshita” implies; I didn’t know it but I know it NOW because of the question. When you know it, off course, you say “shitteimasu” (not shirimasu).

「しりませんでした」implies; I didn’t know it but I know it now because of the question. When you know it, off course, you say ｢しっています [notしります]｣ですね。
