Johanna's gone for a real apocalyptic theme for today's recommendations, celebrating the end of the world and the rise of broken rules. Johanna reckons you better get along to Working On My Night Moves at the Basement, HeadSand also at the Basement, and Grande Finale (the name says it all, really).
Julia's been Working on her Night Moves in her new play Working on My Night Moves at the Basement Theatre. In the third installment of her series, Julia's created a feminist utopia, what a perfect futuristic world looks like. Get yr tickets to blast yourself into the future.
Special guest, Alice from Silo Theatre, joins Johanna and Mikey in studio to let you all in on the best kept theatre secret that is the Silo 2019 Under 30 Club. Despite being without a residential theatre to call home, the powerhouse team at Silo curates a selection of shows, this season includes Wild Dogs Under My Skirt, The Wolves, The Blind Date Project, and My Heart Goes Thadak Thadak. What a golden deal.
Another guest on Stage Direction? Aren't we lucky! This week, Hayley Sproull joins Johanna and Mikey in studio to talk through her top picks for Auckland's Fringe Festival, The Salem Bitch Trials, Actressexual, and David Correos & Donna Brookbanks Do It. And Johanna's top picks are The Bub Club Film Archive, and one-on-one shows Boss of an Office, and Untitled Exhibit.
There's a tonne of stuff going on in the theatre world this week, and that's because it's Fringe Festival, woo. Yep, that time of year, Johanna joins Mike in studio with a special guest, Malia Johnston, who you can see in Movement of the Human. A few special mentions go to Auckland Fringe Festivals FREE Opening Party, Desperate Late Night Energy!, and last but not least, Pussy Riot: Riot Days. It's all just so exciting.
Special guests, Alice Canton and Donna Brookbanks join Geneva and Johanna in studio to chat about theatre. Donna talks David Correos & Donna Brookbanks Do It and Electric Kiwi Billy T Jams, and Alice is all over The Salem Bitch Trials. There's a lot going on, get into it.
Mike tells Zoë about the ordeal with the anklet and the necklaces and all the appropriate characters, however Zoë gets down to business with suggestions for your theatre fix. For a New York critic's pick you can head along to Homos, or Everyone in America at the Q Theatre Loft, or if you're after something a little historical, you can head to Auckland Shakespeare in the Park's Twelfth Night and Henry V at the Pumphouse Theatre. Both sound magical.
Johanna's feelin' groovy this morning, recommending the Basement's upcoming Experimental Dance Week Aotearoa NZ. What's the connection between dance and climbing snowy mountains in nothing but a pair of jogging shorts? We're not too sure either, but it works.
Johanna comes in just to say Happy New Year, because, to be honest, there isn't really much theatre on at the moment (yes, performers need holidays too). Instead, Johanna provides some insight into her predictions for theatre in 2019. She reckons more funding and less audience participation. Nice.
Zoë and Mike find they have something in common, being they both enjoy periodic dramas. And golly does Zoë have the periodic drama of the theatre season for Mike? Home for Christmas is the one, also special mentions to Madonna's Mule, and Down to Clown. Go check 'em out.
