1981- On August 1st 1981, MTV went live on air for the fist time with the words "Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock and Roll" played over footage of the Apollo 11 launch. The first video aired was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles.

1998 - The Spice Girls song "Viva Forever" secured the top slot on the U.K charts, marking their seventh No.1 single, on August 1st 1998.

2000 - August 1st 2000, after a long awaiting single was leaked online, Madonna released her song "Music" two weeks early. A true hazard of the rapidly evolving digital age.

Artifact of the day: 1971 - CBS premieres "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" featuring the hit musical pair, on this day in August 1971.

1980 - July 31st 1980, The Eagles perform their last concert together in Long Beach, California. Don Felder and Glenn Frey spent the whole show throwing threats at each other and parted ways permanently once it ended.

1995 - Bob Marley was honored with a Jamaican commemorative postage stamp on this day in July 1995.

2016 - On July 31st 2016, The Teen Choice Awards gave Justin Timberlake the first ever "Decade Award."

Artifact of the day: 1971 - James Taylor hits No.1 on the U.S Singles Charts with his song "You've Got a Friend", on this day in July 1971. He went on to win Song Of The Year at the Grammy's.

1987 - On July 30th 1987, David Bowie launched the U.S leg of his "Glass Spider Tour" in Philadelphia. His set was famous for its size and required a 43 truck caravan to transport between cities.

1991 - July 30th of 1991, Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses escaped a trqaffic ticket when his limo was pulled over, by threatening to cancel the concert he was on the way to, if the ticket wasn't dismissed.

2003 - To help Toronto recover from the SARS scare in July of 2003, a benefit concert was held on this day and swiftly became the most attended in Canadian history. Guests included The Rolling Stones, Rush and AC/DC.

1983 - On July 27th 1993, Madonna releases her debut album, but unfortunately doesn't receive much critical acclaim - outside of dance clubs who instantly adore her style.

1996 - "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls earns them their first No.1 spot on the U.K charts, where it goes on to stay for the next seven weeks in July of 1996.

2012 - July 27th of 2012, The Beatles reappear on the Billboard charts for a newly released compilation album titled "Tomorrow Never Knows."

Artifact of the day: 1976 - On July 27th 1976, John Lennon is awarded a green card after a 4 year battle to stay in the U.S.
