9XM SoundcastE

Today’s Podcast Artist of the week is the award-winning, young singer Shilpa Rao. ('Khuda Jaane' – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, ‘Meherbaan’ – Bang Bang, ‘Malang’ – Dhoom 3, ‘Manmariziyan’– Lootera, ‘Bulleya’- Ae Dil Hai Mushkil)

It was fantastic to know her as a person, her journey from being a jingle artist to a mainstream playback singer, her views on classical and folk music, and the fact that she actually never wanted to be a singer. She credits Sunidhi Chauhan for breaking the conventional, stereotyped brackets for being a mainstream female playback singer.

Join Eva Bhatt in her chat that she did at Shilpa’s aesthetic pad in Andheri, talking about her inspiring family and how music can become your source of motivation and mental strength.

In this episode, Rao also shares her awe-inspiring personal collection of world music - from Vladimir Horowitz to Ella Fitzgerald to Mehdi Hassan Saab!

She also talks about ‘autotune’ and the common misconceptions around it.

There has to be a lot to learn from somebody who has sung for almost every big music composer today – from Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam, Amit Trivedi to A.R. Rahman and Illayaraja.
