Recovering from Low Calorie Diet & Overtraining – Success Story with Vicki

Today’s interview is with Vicki Agnew.
Vicky has an impressive story to share about overcoming under eating and overtraining. I hope this will inspire you!
Vicky says that she reached out to Kersten out of desperation because she had no idea what to do. Her health had fallen apart.
Today, she has had her period back for 18 months. It will be 2 years in November. She has made a total 180 in her thinking and in the way she trains and eats. Vicky says that today, she doesn’t even recognize the person she was for years.
    Here's Kersten's conversation with Vicki.
Vicky, what got you to the point where you realized that something is going on with your health?
My overtraining didn’t start until I was well into my 30s. I had never been a dieter, done Weight Watchers or anything like that. I was 35 when I had my baby boy and put on a lot of weight. One time, my husband took a picture of me holding my baby, and I was horrified to see it! I thought: I have to lose this weight.
I had been a runner for 15-20 years, on and off. I decided to get back to it. I bought a treadmill and when my boy was sleeping, I’d run a bit. As I started running, the initial weight came off quickly. At first, I only ran for 5 minutes and then walked. The weight seemed to come off easily. People started telling me: “You look great!” These compliments were food for my addictive mind.
I discovered My FitnessPal. At first, I just became aware of what I ate. Then I started realizing: Oh, chocolate cake has this many calories, why don’t I have something else!?
I was losing weight quite quickly. Kersten, you’ve seen my My FitnessPal graph and that my graphs on there took a nose dive, I lost weight so quickly. I became obsessed. Running started to ramp up. My runs went from 5K to 10K to half and full marathons. I’m actually naturally a good runner.
I would run my training miles, but I never ate back the calories I burned. For example, I would burn 1200 calories on my run but eat only 600 back. I was always in a massive deficit.
    Was it intentional?
Yes, probably. I’d say I had fear of replacing calories. My running wasn’t for self care or time out, although I told that to everyone. Lots of runners say it’s my “me” time but in actuality a lot of times it’s about burning calories.
I had my boy in January 2013 and ran my first marathon in May 14. I had a C-section. I ran a marathon after super quick weight loss.

Why “Just Listen To Your Body” Isn't Helpful Advice
Sometimes people say: You don't have to do anything special, just listen to your body and eat what it tells you! Stop when you're full, eat again when you get hungry. Easy as that?
Cool! That's actually what my husband who has never had an eating disorder, told me when I asked him how he decides what and how much to eat. But someone who has had an eating disorder, may not have any idea what that looks like, because

    * She has never had an experience with that. For many people, disordered eating starts very early on, so the last time she actually ate intuitively was maybe in their childhood.
    * She has always had a plan to follow. Without any structure or guidelines at all, she doesn't even know where to start.
    * She has a lot of fear around food. Because she has always followed rules, she has also had lists of good foods and bad foods. She's afraid that if she breaks a “rule”, she's bad. And if there's no rules, what if eating anything makes her “bad”?

    The Diet Spectrum
You know that I like talking about spectrum, because most things are a spectrum! You can learn about my burnout recovery spectrum here, and understand what you have to do to start feeling better and fully recover.
    Similarly, there's a diet spectrum.
On one end of the spectrum is the Strict Plan eating. On the opposite side, there's the No Structure eating. What's in between, is Intentional Eating, what I'm going to discuss today.

    Strict, Rule Based Diet
Let's first look at the first end of the spectrum, which is the Strict, Rule Base Diet. This is what many of us have followed. Here are some things that describe this way of eating:

    * Prescribed number of calories
    * Prescribed number of each macros
    * Lists of “good” and “bad”, “right” and “wrong” foods
    * Specific eating times.

    No Structure Diet
On the other end of the spectrum, there is the No Structure Diet. When I say diet here, I mean the way of eating — not rules. Because No Structure Diet has no rules.

No one likes to gain weight. But sometimes you have to, and you have to deal with it mentally.

Most people think that weight gain is always unhealthy.
You probably know that this is not always the case, and that sometimes weight gain can be necessary if you've dieted too much in the past and as a result, your body has stopped working properly. You may have developed the symptoms of Dreadful Dozen.

6 Tips To Make Dealing With Weight Gain Easier
Tip #1: Know That You're Going To Feel Better
We have this automatic thought in our heads that gaining weight is a wrong thing. But we rarely consider that it can actually make us feel healthier. But if you are currently underweight for YOUR body (even if your BMI doesn't put you in the underweight category), then your body is struggling, and you're not feeling well.
Look at the Dreadful Dozen list again and see, how many of the se symptoms you have? And wouldn't it he great to have everything from the Delightful Dozen list? Knowing that you will feel better eventually can help you deal with body change better.
This is available for you. Stop choosing poor health and skinny body, if you could have much better health and a bit more weight on your body.
Recovering from burnout doesn't mean that you will never have the Dreadful Dozen symptoms anymore. We all have better days and worse days, but overall, your baseline should be high and for the most part, you shouldn't have the Dreadful Dozen symptoms.
Having an appropriate amount of weight on your body means that you're going to feel better.
Tip #2: Learn To Care Less About Other People's Opinions
This is one of the biggest fears that I see women have: What will so-and-so think if I gain weight?
There are several truth bombs I'd like you to be aware about…
First, people don't spend all that much time thinking why we gained weight. I'm not saying that they don't notice it — they might. But that doesn't mean they think something of it.
Secondly, we have to stop putting other, often random people's thoughts before our health. Do you know what are the results of long term overtraining and under eating, for example, especially if your periods are gone too? The results are infertility and osteoporosis, and can be heart disease and cognitive disease. So if we're now choosing to stay the same and not heal our bodies because we'...

When Change Is Scary But Necessary: Why I Changed My Focus and Business

Today’s episode is different because I don’t have a list of bullet points and major takeaways for you.
Instead, I’m sharing what’s on my mind regarding the change that has been happening in my life and business — why I’ve stopped talking so much about, and coaching only, Hypothalamic Amenorrhea recovery (although I still do coach women who have this issue) and switched to other topics of health and fitness.
I’m going to share why this change, as scary as it seemed, had to happen.
Hundreds Of Posts On Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and Recovery
I started blogging about Hypothalamic Amenorrhea in early 2017, when I first found out that I have it. My initial goal wasn’t to coach anyone, I just wanted to blog about my own journey. But after I got my period back five months later, with the help of my acupuncturist and the book No Period, Now What and the Facebook group associated with it (I am no longer part of the group), I realized that I can help others do the same.
I had been through the whole journey and was happy to help other women understand the symptoms of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, what they have to do in order to recover, and hold them accountable as they were going through this.
Over the next three years, I wrote literally hundreds of blog posts on the topic of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, and filmed hundreds of videos which are all available on my YouTube channel.
    The Need for Change
After being in this space for quite some time, and being fully recovered, I had realized that I want to change and pick up more active lifestyle again.
    I addition,

Losing Weight After Overtraining & Burnout Recovery: Should You Try It, and If So, How?

There's one thing I want you to know about me: I am not anti exercise, and I am not anti fat loss if the individual is healthy and does it in a healthy way.
I will never say that regular exercise is always an obsession, and making working out a priority is a bad thing. I have to say this because I see plenty of people who used to be very overtrained and had a terrible relationship with food, bashing regular exercise. I want to be clear that I'm not one of them.
I also understand that weight loss is often achieved via extreme ways, and therefore, can cause food obsession and overtraining. I was there once too. But I also know that it can be done in a responsible and sustainable way.
Why I Was Hesitant To Talk About Fitness and Fat Loss
To be honest, for quite some time after my own recovery I felt almost fearful to share my own workouts on social media. I felt that because I had been talking about Hypothalamic Amenorrhea for such a long time, now starting showing my own workouts was somehow wrong.
But I also realized that I want to show what the life AFTER burnout looks like, and to me, it looked like doing more exercise.
Furthermore, now, 3 years after recovery, I had decided to try and lose some body fat, and at first that too seemed like a big deal. Many people may claim that if you want to change your body, that means that you don't love yourself, and even worse, will definitely cost you another eating disorder.
This does not have to be true, and hasn't been in my case. My relationship with food is great, I am healthy and feel good, so there is no reason why I should hide it! I felt like I'm inauthentic when I don't share that.
I want you to know that you don't have to feel guilty for wanting to change your body, you have the right to do so.
In today's post, I'm sharing with you how to know if losing weight after overtraining and hypothalamic amenorrhea recovery is right for you, and if so, how to go about it.
Is Losing Weight After Overtraining and Burnout Recovery the Right Step For You?
First, I want you to be able to figure out if you really should attempt any fat loss or not. You may or may not be ready for it. The next steps will help you answer this question.
First, you have to be physically healthy in order to even consider fat loss.
Physiological Signs That Tell You: You Are NOT Ready for Fat Loss

    * Your periods are missing. Obviously, if you still have Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, this is not the time to attempt any leaner look or weight loss.

Conversation With Chronic Pain Coach Christina Wei

I wanted to have this important conversation with Christina Wei because she is the person who has helped me to significantly improve my lower back pain that I have suffered from almost three years. The solution that Christina has to offer, and what has allowed me to return to exercise and other normal daily life activities, likely surprises you.
May pain started in 2017. I saw many professionals and even when some of them helped, nothing lasted. After working with Christina, I've experienced the least amount of pain and in the morning before recording this episode, I was at the park doing box jumps! Something I wasn't able to do for years.
While my pain isn't completely gone, it's the least it has been in the last three years. Today, I'm bringing you my interview with Christina Wei.
Christina, who are you and what do you do?
My name is Christina Wei, and I'm a chronic pain health coach. Not too many people now what a pain coach does. In a nutshell, I'm someone who helps people with chronic pain, understand and learn about the mindbody connection so that they can heal themselves.
Usually it takes a few sessions to really understand what goes on in a person's life that affects their pain. This method has proven to work but is not very widely known.
I don't do any hands on work, diagnose or treat, but I can help people find the right resources and the right information to heal themselves.
What are the tools that you use to help people to recover from chronic pain?
The main tool is education. Most of us are thinking about pain in terms of only the physical, muscular and structural. This is how we treat it. But chronic pain that is not acute pain or something caused my an injury or cancer, should heal. The human body can heal itself within 6 weeks.
But oftentimes the pain goes on longer. In this case, it's a matter of unlearning it. You have to unlearn the pain, and learn to not be in pain, learn to take care of yourself on may different levels.
Would you say that our pain is not actually physical, it's mental?
One of the biggest barriers is that when people hear about this, they say: Do you mean that my pain is not real? But this is absolutely not what I'm saying. I know that the pain is very real. I'm not telling anyone that you're a crazy person.
I had pain for many years and your, Kersten, had it too. So it's not imaginary. What we are saying is that it's nothing that can be cured on the physical level. It has to involve the mind. It's important to look at the factors that keep the pain going.
Usually, there are two factors: Fear of the pain,

    How Severe Is Your Overtraining?
Before you can tell if you can keep exercising when overtrained, you have to understand how severe your overtraining is. Once you've identified that, it's easier to tell what whether or not you should be exercising while overtrained.
    Three Levels of Overtraining
There are three levels of overtraining: Level 1: Overreaching, Level 2: Mild/Moderate overtraining, and Level 3: Severe overtraining.
    Level 1: Overreaching
Everyone who has ever worked out has experienced this. This is actually not even overtraining; the more accurate word to describe this is overreaching. This is the muscle soreness that you feel after a hard workout day. Sometimes it may last even 3-4 days if the workout has been really intense.
So, you may feel a little uncomfortable for a few days, but if not every workout makes you feel like this, you're good. Take a few days off, walk and stretch, and you should be good to go and do your next workout. You just want to make sure that you don't get overly sore every time you work out because that could take you to the next level which is mild overtraining.
    Level 2: Mild/Moderate Overtraining
Mild/moderate overtraining happens when you've had too many too hard workouts, so your body's ability to recover has slowed down. You haven't had enough rest and you may not have been eating enough either.
Here's how you know that you're likely mildly/moderately overtrained:

    * You're having hard time falling asleep or staying asleep
    * You're sore more often, and it takes several days for the soreness to dissipate
    * Your cravings increase: You have to fight off cravings more and more often. Your energy is likely out of balance because your energy expenditure may be much higher than you...

Your Questions Answered! – https://urbanjane.co/blog/hypothalamic-amenorrhea-carbs-hit-training-elimination-diets-your-questions-answered-balanced-vibes-podcast-ep-5/
Many of my followers and clients have asked me:
How did your husband handle your recovery?
Did he say anything about your weight gain?
Did you need a lot of validation from him?
    What did he say?
To answer these questions, I decided to ask Hugh to my podcast and talk about all the things my Hypothalamic Amenorrhea recovery and how he saw it. To be honest, at first I wasn't sure how much we even have to say about because the entire process wasn't as painful for me as I've seen it is for many other women, mostly because by the time I started my period recovery, I was already recovered from my eating disorder. I didn't have huge breakdowns either because I realized that this is what I have to do to restore my health.
But we ended up having a good chat! In this podcast, Hugh and I are answering 8 questions from my clients and followers, about our relationship during my Hypothalamic Amenorrhea recovery.
    1. Did Hugh know anything about Hypothalamic Amenorrhea before?
Hugh: No. I had never heard about it.
Kersten: When was the first time you learned about it?

Kersten: What did I mention? What was the first information? Do you remember?
Hugh: I think your acupuncturist said that you might have it, right?
Kersten: Yes. Do you remember my first reaction to it? Was I super heartbroken?
Hugh: I don’t remember. What was it?
Kersten: I think I was actually relieved because I now had the permission to just walk and not work out so hard all the time. But of course it was devastating at the same time because as you know, I’ve been working out all my life and exercise is a big passion of mine.
But before that, you didn’t know anything about Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. I don’t think that you’re not the only person. The majority of people don’t know what that is.

    Today's Topics
Here’s what we’ll cover in today’s post and podcast:

The missing part is the mindset.
We're not thinking about things the right way. That's why I have all my coaching clients either do expressive writing, journaling, meditation, either silent or guided meditation,
