  • Mitchell Rabin Interviews Environmental Journalist Richard Schiffman
Tibetan Buddhist teacher who is credited for having ‘planted the seeds’ of Tibetan Buddhism in the West (as described in the book When the Swans Came to the Lake), Chogyam, Trungpa Rinpoche“the student of meditation, the spiritual warrior, lives with a broken heart…” he was suggesting that while so much of life can be so rich, vibrant and alive, there remains a fundamental suffering across the planet, the heartbreak of humanity.  People without water, food, shelter, medicine.
There are many other aspects of suffering but the above are fundamental to virtually all humans.  So when one sees this, we appreciate the joy that is also available, the love and the beauty that is also all around us.  When we understand the suffering however, one can understand some of the bizarreness and pathology that shows up virtually everywhere in our society–the body politic, business, religion, even science and sports!  What’s the common denominator?  Humans!!  Wonderful as we can be, as a whole and with brilliant exceptions, we lack balance between the elements, we lack reason and emotional intelligence, which is actually the basis of reason.
In today’s show, Mitchell and environmental health journalist will explore this level of psyche as well as both practical issues and solutions we have in hand to those issues.

  • Mitchell Rabin on Mind Over Matter & Imaging the World We Most Want
Mitchell Rabin speaks this evening about the idea of Mind over Matter & imaging the world we most want..  On one hand, this could be called psychokinesis parapsychologically, and it is also the activation of will, jettisoning the body, heart, mind and soul into action.  When one learns or knows how to center, and align, when one has one’s values ‘in hand’ and then sense of meaning and purpose alive as well, magic can and does happen.
When we look sociologically, psychologically, anthropologically and spiritually at our species in particular and the state of our habitat and all its sentient life in general, we see that we are at, well, another precipitous moment in simultaneously planetary-climatic and human history.  It’s not the first juncture of these but it may be one of the most life-threatening on a mass scale.
While so much is going on these days socially, politically and ethically that makes us want to grab the Creator’s sleeve and say “What’s up, how imperfect did you make this human creature?” we have ourselves to turn to in order to transform the species before we indeed are “transformed’ in the old sense of “ash-to-ash….”  Doesn’t sound good?  Great!  Let’s roll our sleeves up and get to it, forming partnerships with our indigenous brothers and sisters, with enlightened government officials and with socially-minded, eco-minded captains of finance and industry.  Even after all the damage our species has inflicted on our habitat and on itself, we will not all that to deter us, unspeakably horrific as it is and work diligently to turn this ship around.

  • Mitchell Speaks of Reality & Hope, Part 2
This evening Mitchell Rabin discusses the interface of reality & hope Part 2.  We are not approaching the precipice, we are standing on top of it.  On one hand, arctic ice is melting at an exponential rate, permafrost in Siberia hasn’t been freezing and species are going extinct at a rate so rapid we can barely keep count and probably can’t.  Yes folks, it’s the Titanic all over again.  Are we just re-arranging the chairs on deck?  Are we toasting and enjoying our last sips of bubbly, or are the efforts we are making—that are being made world-wide–going to be able to sequester sufficient carbon and methane, change our consumption, lifestyle, dietary, driving, carbon-spewing habits quickly and radically enough to shift the physics (and geology), chemistry and biology so that sentient life, including human, will survive the predicament we’ve created?
What’s true?  Well, we’ll explore that too along with the importance to the human psyche of this unknown quantity but which has a brilliant quality, called hope.  Hope sometimes pulls people through disasters and stage 4 cancer.  Hope is a life-raft and to dash it is virtually synonymous with snuffing out the life-force itself.  It’s almost like having ‘two deaths’.  The death of hope and the death of the body.  Isn’t oneenough?!!   Isn’t knowing how to cultivate hope in the midst of crisis what really shows (and builds) character?  Tune in today for what will be a reality-check on one hand, and how to build hope that leads to loving and meaningful action.
