  • Episode 14: Flipping the Mattress on the Sleep Industry Bruce Brown cofounder Element Mattress

Like most people who create a business, Bruce Brown started out in the same profession as a sales person and quickly realized that there are some gaps in the quality of mattresses on the market and saw a niche that he could fill.  Element Mattress, less than one year old, decided to distribute by E-commerce because he was tired of feeling like a piece of meat when a customer enters a brick and mortar mattress store. Plus, you can have 100 mattresses on a showroom floor and the main difference is that they put a different logo and cover.  Bruce said the foam mattress technology is 50 years old and is marketed like its cutting edge.  Well, it’s not and he discusses some of the advances that manufactures have invented and why they choose the types of enhanced foam they did.  Mr. Brown explains the story of how the products they launched were developed and why they choose predominately the chiropractic profession as the spokesman and salesman for the company.
If you were ever interested in answering the patient’s question, “What mattress should I buy?” then take a listen.  They have an 18 inch display model showcasing the materials and a compensation plan for offices interested in selling them direct to the patients. Reach out and mention you heard about it on A Doctor’s Perspective Podcast.
As usual, the last 2/3 rd of the interview goes into more marketing, staff questions,  personal conversation about relationships, maximizing your time with children (being present), podcasts, books and more.  His tip on how to get kids to provide an answer and dialogue to, “how was your day at school.”  The quality of the questions we ask are more important than the quality of things that we say.  Think of two things to be grateful for prior to getting out of bed is one of his keys to starting the day off right.
Sleeping hot and creating a crater in the bed at night are two of the main problems they seeked to remedy.  The Element Mattresses hold up over time and the mattress cover fibers are handmade and quilted to wick heat away.   You get a 100 day sleep guarantee, free shipping on returns.  Their newest offering is a patented   qtech 29 fiber paired with copper fibers built into the cover. Bruce  mentioned looking at research, some of it on benefits to animals, about the potenetial healthy properites copper  can bring to us.  Developing copper into the sheets (not just the cover) is in the works as well as a cooling device to make any mattress more temperature comfortable.  He spent a lot of time with non-profits and actually gives product returns to non-profit  organizations.

  • Episode 13 Trust in the Data MyoVision Creator David Marcarian

David Marcarian, creator of the Myovision scan, got his undergraduate degree in physics and a master in psycho-physiology. Learn how he discovered and implemented surface EMG during his NHA grant and NASA employment at age 26.  It’s a great story about jets, science and removing electrical interference and stumbling upon creating a device that can be used to measure muscle and nerve excitability or lack thereof.  The company has advanced over the years and has dynamic range of motion device to measure range of motion but also is able to measure if muscles are firing in the correct sequence, DynaROM . This way you can tell if someone is bending over and faking a muscle injury or if it is real.  His device is in the AMA book as a standard for measuring range of motion and it correlates .99 with VAS score.  State of Florida tried to disprove the technology which would have had far reaching consequences on the chiropractic profession but David won all the way to the Supreme Court which is all documented here.   Myovision is being used a lot by physiatrists and chiropractors and his other flagship product Proformavision is used in twelve hospitals.
DynaROM is for objective data and the sEMG is to help keep patients focused on function versus symptoms by showing objective data on how they are progressing. Objective data is more important than dogma.  However, just because you can’t measure something doesn’t mean it does not exist, it’s a real phenomenon: he learned that from NASA.  They found that after 10 seconds post adjustment muscle activity was reduced by 30 percent.
He will be featured as an expert witness on the new FOX show: You the Jury.
Remember, Individual differences are the norm. Students don’t be afraid to jump into the personal injury arena of patient care. Health fair screening tip: let the patient tell you what the myovision scan shows.
He raced Corvette Z06 and holds a record, destroyed the Ferrari and was challenged by the Porsche club. Marcarian also crashed at 158 mph, videos are on his site. Plus a secret passion of his that you have to listen to too find out. It will blow your mind... around minute 49-51 ish.

Your goals need to be about a bigger mission, “the why” do you do things. What’s the purpose of that actual goal? Material possessions can be a marker that you hit certain millstones but it won’t sustain you. Money is a good measurement tool but its not the ultimate goal
Dr. Michael gives advice on how to get involved with local athletes.  He recommends students get a mentor or a coach that you can really learn from so you can make the learning curve quicker.
To have more balance, you have to trust more people.  Work life integration is more important than trying to balance it.  if you integrate both so that work is on purpose then a vacation just amplifies life even more. Make your vacations meaningful; learn something while you are there.
