Dr. Dennis Timko Podiatrist takes a more conservative approach to his treatment and has a passion for diabetic injuries, neuropathy foot pains, pediatric feet issues, and will soon be double board certified.  He has three years of surgical training and has special certification in wound care.  He is currently learning more about herbal medicines and vitamin therapies and would like to offer a more complete approach to his patient’s needs.   Dr. Timko’s story for becoming a podiatrist is the kind that makes doctors special.  He was a runner and witnessed plenty of ankle and foot injuries and shadowed podiatrists for a few summers and that is when he realized, this should be my career.  I didn’t know this but the school he went to was an Osteopathic school in Iowa. First two years they all shared the same classes and then they switched to their specialties in year three.

Dr. Timko has a podiatrist podcast called WTF – What the Foot, is an aspiring Videographer, wordpress enthusiast, father, baseball addict and another surprise half way through the episode. He gives advice on tips and options to start up a new podiatry office, location, social media marketing and he says to just “ask the patient” for a referral. He also explains MACRA for Medicare reimbursement and the outlook of his profession in the next 5 years.

Small Town Pharmacist Big Time Growth

In the second episode I have the privilege to interview Courtney Pitre, Doctor of Pharmacy.  She went to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for her biology major and chemistry minor before moving near the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee for pharmacy school.

She discusses her struggle to purchase a clinic or a store in a small town of 1500 people. Then explains how she has doubled her business in every aspect in less than two years.  Her tips for hiring staff are finding the right character, personal service, mature, trust worthy, trainable and local people.  She emphasized the local part because of the relationships they have in the community since she was considered an outsider even though she grew up 25 minutes away.

She collects antique pharmacy objects and even has a story about a first mass produced bottle of insulin dating back to the 20s or 30s.  Listen to see how she manages to take at least one European vacation per year and how kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico (she lives in South Louisiana) has led to not only catching dozens of crabs but her own style of meditation.

Anticipating Your Patients Questions

My guest today is a board certified, fellowship trained Dermatologist.  He attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and double majored in Chemistry and Microbiology.  Continued his education at Louisiana State University in Shreveport for Medical School and then did his residency at University of Alabama in Birmingham.  Dr. Ledet also did a year of research on clinical drug trials of psoriasis and foot fungus.  His Fellowship training was Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology in Cincinnati Ohio.  Dr. John is highly skilled at MOHS surgery. 

Listen to the show for his recommendation on affordable and quality face cream...or is it lotion?  One of the keys to success is to know your audience and the people you are serving.  A farming community vs tech community will require you  to change how you communicate to the patients.  He also gives a great tip on how to install a low cost call system to alert staff that you need help in a room instead of screaming at them through a door. Train your staff with scripts and procedures so that the most common questions patients have are already answered.  Streamline processes and educate your staff on the what and why you want the phone answered a certain way, why you use this suture versus another etc .  He has plenty more to say so listen to the episode.
