Carol Metcalf is based in Santa Barbara, CA and has been a Stand-up Comedian for 28 years. She is a regular at The Comedy Store and appeared on Comedy Central and Girls Behaving Badly. She is also a SAG-AFTRA actress, professor and producer. Her documentary “It Only Hurts When I Don’t Laugh” is based on her masters paper examining how humor can literally help the process of mentally recovering from trauma.

Like my Veterans I work with PTSD tell me, I walked the walk. I’m sharing this now because when people are isolated and fear the unknown it can trigger depression and even suicidal thoughts. A Statement from Grace:

I created this piece as an exercise given to me by my mentor Marissa Chibas on How to Tell A Mythic Story. As Marissa says, "This is a moment calling for the greatest stories our imaginations and souls can muster". As an actor, I gravitate towards personal story-telling. When I reflected on my experience on the Camino de Santiago, I realized I learned so much about my own strength and the beauty of my relationships with my mother and sister that I wanted to share this with the world.

A statement from Martha:
“My intention and hope for writing this piece is to act as a virtual hand to hold to all those right now who are on their own individual roads of recovery and to tell them that they are seen, loved and to encourage them, especially in these uncertain and anxious times, to keep going because they and the beautiful lives they will live ED free will be so incredibly worth it. It is also written from my perspective of what I have learnt through my experience of battling this illness for 8 years and how I have come through the other side, even when there was a point in my life where I truly thought I would never be free or happy again, and I want this acts as a ray of hope and that no matter how hard times get to always believe and channel their inner strength because once you do that - that is when miracles start to happen. I am sharing this piece now because, I know that when I was in the beginning stages of my recovery this would have been something I would love to have heard to reassure me that things will be alright (particularly in a time like living in quarantine and lockdown where we are constantly being confronted with external anxiety and potentially triggering information that can really deter a person mental wellbeing and/or recovery). I am sharing this piece in hopes that it reaches at least one person and that it can help them in some way or if anything allows them to realise just how bloody strong and badass they are and that a totally recovered life free from restriction and playing small in the world is absolutely possible.”

Martha Gearon is 20 years old and lives in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. As with everyone at the moment, she is currently in lockdown. However once we are through this, she hopes to follow her passion of acting and singing into musical theatre, whereupon she will start training at an academy this September if all is going well!

“Broken Vessels was an exploration of the idea that things are both broken and beautiful at the same time and that our capacity to see this beauty enriches our life. I think this idea resonates now because of Covid-19. None of us are living the lives we expected to live right now, but we are still able to experience beauty and connection in less than ideal circumstances.”

Broken Vessels first appeared in The Binnacle in 2018. 

Ellen Birkett Morris is the author of Surrender, a chapbook, and Lost Girls, a short story collection forthcoming in June 26, 2020. Her poetry has appeared in The Clackamas Literary Review, Juked, Gastronomica, and Inscape, among other journals.  Morris won top prize in the 2008 Binnacle Ultra-Short Edition and was a finalist for the 2019 Rita Dove Poetry Prize. She is based in Louisville, KY.

Elaine Fields Smith is an award-winning author and poet who loves to help people smile. Christina Hoag is the author of two novels Girl on the Brink, which was named to Suspense Magazine’s Best YA list, and Skin of Tattoos, finalist for the Silver Falchion Award for suspense, and co-author of the nonfiction book Peace in the Hood: Working with Gang Members to End the Violence (Turner, 2014). A former journalist for the Miami Herald and Associated Press, she reported from Latin America for Time, Business Week, Financial Times, and other media. She now lives in Los Angeles where she has taught creative writing in a prison and to at-risk teen girls. She regularly speaks at conferences and events and is working on her next novel.
