Whether you're working on a novel, polishing a script, editing a film or just your own vlog doesn't matter—always try cutting more than you're comfortable with. This is often referred to ask killing your darlings. Sometimes you might over-cut but you won't know unless you eliminate more than you're comfortable with. Often times, you find that most of the stuff you had isn't actually needed. Some might need to be put back in, but most probably not. This technique helps you to "omit needless words" in a sense and leave the strongest possible project. Try it and let me know how it works for you. Feel free to ask me any questions or offer some of your thoughts. And for more free resources from your 360 creative coach, check out my website at http://philsvitek.com.
Lots of businesses use a SWOT analysis whenever they're debating the merits of an idea, partnership, deal, project, potential hire, etc. But you can utilize this method for your personal stuff too! It's real simple. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. So get a board, and assess any venture via this process and you'll make a much more informed decision! Feel free to ask specifics if you're stuck or comment with ways you're putting this into practice. And for more free resources from your 360 creative coach, check out my website at http://philsvitek.com. PS: Shout out to HBO's Silicon Valley for teaching me this!
In high school they ask us what we want to do, but they never stop to have us consider our why (our purpose/our calling). This is why people can get miserable in jobs—it’s not in balance with their why. Simon Sinek talks about this notion a lot and today I’m going to distill it for you in my own words and offer up how I’m applying this notion in my life. It’s my hope that after checking this lesson out, you’ll not only have a greater understanding of why your why matters most (as opposed to the what or how) and you’ll start to think about what your why is. Make sure to write it down as you do. Even as you work through the process of figuring it out, write everything down. Saying it to yourself in your head is not enough. You must speak it to existence. Once you have it, allow it to be your guiding light. And please share it with me and others, whether in the comment section or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. I’d love to hear from you!

What a week it has been! Been doing a lot of stuff for the GRAMMYs, my regular job and trying to finish up the movie. In this vlog I reflect upon all that and how sometimes one day can feel like a year or more when you're in the entertainment industry. I also give my thoughts on the passing of Kobe Bryant and the lessons it's taught me. Plus I go over what leadership means to me, the difficulties of knowing when something is okay as is in order to meet a deadline vs taking your time and my experience filming additional material for my film. Hosting is a profession that often gets overlooked and undermined. Certainly the Oscars are evidence of this. So, my friend Jaimi Alexander and I look at the large context of the business and argue why events such as the Academy Awards should in fact have a host. Feel free to offer your two cents as well, whether in the comment section on hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. And for more free resources, tips, etc, visit my website: http://philsvitek.com. If anything can be art, but not everything is art, then what defines art? It's a question that Jaimi Alexander (@JaimiAlexander) and I explore in this episode. Now, you might be thinking why does this matter? Well, that's also something we touch upon because it actually matters more than you might think. We borrow Simon Sinek's definition of art (which as 3 simple requirements: https://youtu.be/aEf7BLUyd0o) and explore various art forms through that lens to see how they stack up. Try doing the same with your art because you might just end up making it better! Comment below with your thoughts on our opinions. There's so many platforms to publish to as a content creator and the barrier to entry is literally a smartphone. This fact freezes a lot of amazing people from actually doing anything because they believe the market to be oversaturated and don't think they have a place in it. Is this thinking true? Well, that's what my friend Jaimi Alexander and I discuss in this episode. We also look at it from the consumer side especially now that we have services like Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Apple TV, Hulu, Amazon Prime and others. Feel free to offer your two cents as well, whether in the comment section on hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. And for more free resources, tips, etc, visit my website: http://philsvitek.com. Jaimi Alexander is a host who I met during my time at AfterBuzz TV/Black Hollywood Live. From first impressions, I always knew she was a hard worker and talented. Over the years we’ve gotten to know each other and our mutual respect grew. And yet as much as we shared similarities in mindset and such, we’ve never really sat down and had a long form conversation such as this one. So, I’m honored to have been able to interview her and learn more about what makes her tick, so to speak. I learned a lot and I know you will too. So enjoy my wide ranging conversation with Jaimi Alexander and let me know what you thought!
