We who had a right to expect nothing are filled with everything that Jesus is, and we are given everything that Jesus deserves. We are blessed, not because WE are good, but because HE is good. We have failed, but His gracious covenant loyalty will never fail. The story of Abraham and the covenant God made within Himself on Abraham’s behalf and all of his spiritual descendants (including us) shows us the character of God: He is faithful to His word, and His love is unconditional. The Abrahamic Covenant gives us a glimpse into the New Covenant of grace, where the Son of God came to execute, uphold, and sustain the covenant in His grace, expressed in the greatest act of “hesed” ever committed: the cross. His gracious covenant loyalty (hesed) has forever become the basis of our appeal to God. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)

Hesed is a matter of the heart - God’s heart! He is full of inexpressible kindness and tender mercies towards us. He longs to be gracious to us! One of the most beautiful pictures of God’s inexpressible kindness and tender mercies towards us is in the story of the return of the prodigal son. His father was waiting and watching with great the anticipation, longing for the day he could lavish his son with grace. That’s how God feels about each of us! God sent Jesus, who is the manifestation of His lovingkindness, so that in Him we could experience being encircled with His unfailing love. The cross was an act of perfect hesed! The cross was the kindest act ever committed. May we all get the epiphany of His hesed!

From Psalm 103:4, we find the 4th benefit of the cross: He crowns us with His lovingkindness and His tender mercies. He surrounds us with His unfailing love and the compassions of a good, good Father. In this message we take a deep dive into the beautiful word “lovingkindness,” the Hebrew word “hesed.” It’s the defining characteristic of God, and He is ABOUNDING in it!!

Our Mediator has redeemed our lives from the pit. Jesus paid the price in His own blood to buy us out of the slavery of sin and death for eternity AND out of destruction and a cursed life today. Whatever we are going through, Jesus has been there. He has experienced our suffering as our Lamb of God, and He will restore all that we have lost. In “He Redeems My Life from the Pit,” the story of Job gives us a picture of Jesus as our Mediator and Redeemer. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers us from all our troubles. “As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” (James 5:11, NIV)

Why should we believe that Jesus is the Healer of our bodies? Because Jesus bore and took away our sicknesses as well as our sins at the cross. What is the means by which God delivers healing to us? It is through the body of Jesus Christ. When He became the Lamb of God, it was not only so that His blood could wash away our sins, but also so that His body would be scourged and broken for our healing.

The first benefit listed in Psalm 103 is forgiveness of sins. If we can receive that first benefit and truly believe that we are justified through the blood of Jesus - just as if we’d never sinned - and if we can know deep in our hearts that we have been fully reconciled to God, then we will have no hesitation in taking advantage of the access we have to the riches of His grace and all the other benefits of the cross!

The focus of this teaching is the love commitment Jesus has made to us by binding Himself to our humanity as our Mediator, our Intercessor, the God-Man. It was His choice to be a forever servant because of our preciousness to Him. The more we know of the cost of the cross, the more grateful we will be and the more we are going to want for Him to get what He paid for! The greater our understanding of His love sacrifice for us, the more we will want to honor Him by receiving every benefit of the cross.
