Here are some historical events that took place on November 25:
1783: The British evacuated New York City, their last military position in the United States, during the American Revolutionary War.
1864: A Confederate force led by General John Bell Hood launched the Franklin-Nashville Campaign in the American Civil War.
1915: Albert Einstein presented the field equations of general relativity to the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
1947: The Hollywood Ten, a group of writers, directors, and producers, were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify during the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings.
1952: Agatha Christie's murder-mystery play "The Mousetrap" opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in London. It would go on to become the longest continuously-running play in history.
1970: Japanese author Yukio Mishima committed seppuku (a form of ritual suicide) after a failed coup d'état attempt to restore imperial rule in Japan.
1984: Thirty-six top musicians gathered in a Notting Hill studio in London to record the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" The song was released to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.
1999: The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
