We are back with our lager series and this time we bring you Japanese Rice Lager! With Tori jetting off to Japan we thought we would bring you some actual Japanese versions…. Listen to find out how that worked out!
This style is pretty new in the grand scheme of lagers, so we bring you a little history and a little bit about using rice in beer and brewing.
Beers we tried:
Asahi Super Dry
Akita Inu Beer
Summer Beer by Newbarns
Pink Lemonade Rice Lager by Donzoko
Have you had any good rice lagers lately? Let us know!
Here is the article Jo found about rice lagers in Brew Your Own magazine:

There’s been talk recently about ingredients in beer and if here, in the UK we should restrict what can go in a beverage called beer. Here at A Woman’s Brew we say why stifle creativity?! So, we bring you some beers that use interesting or even unique ingredients.
Some of these beers we’ve been sitting on for a little bit, so they may be difficult to get hold of if you want to try them – soz! But hopefully we inspire you to go try some beers made from interesting things.
We tried:
Elixir by Yonder, a birch water, cold-steeped, barrel aged, sour porter with chaga. Read more here:
https://brewyonder.co.uk/blogs/news/natures-elixir
Purple is the new black by Kees, a Ube pastry stout
DDF M*rs Bar from Vault City x Neon Raptor, a deep fried mars bar stout
What’s the weirdest ingredient you’ve ever had in a beer? Let us know!

We are delighted to have Kelly from Good Chemistry back on the podcast this week, chatting about their new beer All Welcome. The beer was brewed to celebrate the 2nd birthday of She Drinks Beer – a regular night at the pub for women who enjoy beer. To mark the occasion, Kelly and the team at Good Chemistry welcomed women from the Bristol hospitality scene to the brewery to brew a delicious pale ale.
We chat to Kelly about the brew day and why She Drinks Beer is such an important event. Through these events held at Good Chem’s pubs The Good Measure and The Kings Head, not only do people get to socialise in a welcoming environment, they also get to learn about the beverage they love. And we at A Woman’s Brew love that!
Find out more about the brew day on Good Chemistry’s blog here:

Stouts – for some they are a seasonal indulgence and others they are an all year round affair. But often you will hear in the craft beer community cries of ‘it’s too thin!’ or ‘this would be better if it was barrel aged!’ We are here to challenge this misinformation – session stouts are a thing and they can be just as flavourful as your 15% syrup thick beers!
There is always a time and place for imperial stouts, but what about your oatmeal, dry irish, milk and export stouts? We try 4 different stouts all under 5.5% and see if we can get the same luxurious experience we would get with an imperial (spoiler – we do!)
Beers we tried:
Scoria by Neon Raptor
Mini Milk by Arbor
Dusk by Cloudwater
Cold Pressed Summer Stout by Unbarred
How do you feel about session stouts? Let us know in the comments.

Beer is often linked to music, pop culture and other interests that craft beer drinkers enjoy – but have you ever considered pairing beer with tarot? Courtney Iseman has been pulling tarot cards and pairing them with beer experiences for a while in her newsletter Hugging The Bar, which Jo loves to read. She’s now put her experience into a new beer zine - Beer Tarot: Pulling Cards, Pouring Beer, & Discovering Self.
With Courtney, Jo discusses how you can start using tarot and how you can apply it to your craft beer hobby. She also gives advice on how to work on your own zine.

We are a bit late for Oktoberfest this year, but we’d drink a Marzen all year round! Continuing our lager series, we’re moving to Munich and the beer festival of all beer festivals. Marzen was one of the original beers drunk at Oktoberfest, so lets look at its origins and what you should expect from the style.
Beers we tried:
Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe - Eucharius Marzen
Kulmbacher Brauerei - Mönchshof Märzen
Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg - Weltenburger Anno 1050
Duration - Harvest Bier
Jo is passionate about Marzens and how they should be true to style – listen in full to see which we recommend.

During our visit to Unbarred to brew Like & Subscribe (available now!), we sat down with Emma Inch and Dan Philips to talk Social Media.
You might love it, you might hate it, you might have a relationship status that’s ‘it’s complicated’ with social media, we all have our viewpoints. And the internet is the place to air those! We discuss our own relationships with social media, the platforms we love and share some positive and negative experiences.
We can’t deny that Tori and I wouldn’t have met without Facebook and there are some positive communities and tribes that have been built through social media.
What are your thoughts? Let us know!

Have you liked & subscribed?! We were given the unique opportunity by our friends at Unbarred to collaborate on a beer. Now, that doesn’t sound too unique, as you know we’ve done that before. However, this time we were collaborating with other content creators as well as a brewery!
Pulling together all the people who love craft beer so we can support and champion one another, the new beer Like & Subscribe is being released on 10th October at all good bottleshops, bars, taprooms and pubs as well as on Unbarred’s webshop. We got to brew the beer, along with the wonderful Emma Inch of Fermentation Radio and Same Again and our new mate Dan Philips of 1 Minute Beer Reviews.
This episode starts on brew day where we chat to Jordan and Brett from Unbarred and Iain from BarthHaas X, who brought along the hop products for the brew. We then move on to the beer being and we chat to all those involved. Why is the beer community important to us and how do we, as content creators, use our passion to support the industry we love?
Go grab a few cans of Like & Subscribe at Unbarred’s webshop here:
