  • Are we replacing coal power fast enough?
Australia's coal fired power plants are on borrowed time.
The Northern power plant at Port Augusta in South Australia was reduced to rubble in 2017, and Hazelwood in Victoria's LaTrobe Valley went the same way last year.
Next in line is Liddell in New South Wales, slated for decommissioning in 2023.
This month marks the deadline the Federal Government gave the energy industry to make a plan for a world without Liddell and create 1000MW of new power, or it would fund a new gas-fired power station.
So has the industry filled the gap yet?
And what happens the next time a coal-fired power station shuts?

The people of Timor Leste woke up on Sunday morning to an extraordinary situation: large parts of their capital, Dili, were underwater.

It was so heavy and unrelenting that much of the city's downtown region, including the presidential palace, the national hospital, and thousands of homes, was inundated.
The floods came at the exact moment that the country was scrambling to control a major COVID outbreak.

  • Solving the never-ending work day
Australians work some of the longest hours in the developed world, and for plenty of people the job doesn't finish when they leave the office.
Now at one workplace in Australia, employees and their union are saying enough is enough.
They've incorporated a 'right to disconnect' into their contracts.
So what does that mean in practice?
And could it work for you?

No home, no flight, dwindling medical supplies and a depleted bank account.
We're following two of the many thousands of Australians currently stranded overseas.
Affordable flights home are still vanishingly rare, with a strict cap on international arrivals, so the quarantine system isn’t overwhelmed.
So what do you do when you’re stuck on the wrong side of the world during a pandemic?

  • Exposing the Luna Park cover-up
In 1979 at Luna Park in Sydney, the ghost train caught fire.
It killed seven people, and police at the time were quick to blame an electrical fault.
But there were always whispers of something else at play: could it have been arson? If so, who would do such a thing? And did the police investigation at the time and the other subsequent inquiries go deep enough?
Today on The Signal, we sit down with ABC investigative reporter Caro Meldrum-Hanna to hear some of the answers.
What have Caro and her colleagues unearthed?
And who was it that made sure this stayed buried for so long?

For many countries, the hold up has been the international supply chain, but that's not the case here.
Today on The Signal, we investigate the slow start to Australia's COVID-19 vaccine program.
Is it time to admit there's a problem? And either way, how do we speed it up?
