  • Are COVID-19 variants outpacing vaccines?
COVID-19 was expected to mutate slowly, but a year into the pandemic, we've lost track of how many new variants there are.
Scientists are still working out whether the vaccines that we're only just rolling out now will be an effective shield against them.
Today on The Signal, we're taking stock of how COVID-19 is changing, and what weapons we have against the newest versions of it.
So is the virus outpacing vaccine technology, and if it is, then how will Australia ever open up its borders?

  • How COVID created unbeatable politicians
COVID-19 has done something strange to Australian politics.
The WA Premier Mark McGowan is facing this weekend's election with a 90% approval rating, and the opposition has conceded defeat before polls have opened.
Campaigning to win an election from the top job has always been a big advantage, but this is new territory.
So does the same rule apply to Scott Morrison, and will he test it out before the end of the year?

  • Convincing people to get the jab
Most people can't wait to get a COVID-19 vaccine, but new research found that more than a quarter of Australians feel the opposite way.
The Government's answer so far has been to set up a COVID-19 Myth Busting unit.
So what will it take to talk millions of vaccine-hesitant Australians over the line?
Or will our scepticism stand in the way of herd immunity?

  • How JobKeeper landed in some rich pockets
JobKeeper was supposed to go to the hardest hit corners of the economy.
It’s the program widely credited with keeping us from economic disaster but it’s also had some unintended consequences.
Some companies that accessed the subsidy went on to turn substantial profits and are being called out for using government money to pay out big dividends to shareholders.
It’s not against the rules, but is it right?

  • Weren't house prices meant to fall?
A year ago, as COVID-19 spread worldwide, the smart money was on property prices taking a hit.
But 12 months on, prices are rising faster than ever, with no sign of a slowdown in sight.
In February, the market recorded the biggest monthly price gain in 17 years.
So if the biggest disruption in a generation doesn't cause house prices to drop, could anything?
And what does all the heat mean for renters trying to buy their first home?

  • Christian Porter's emphatic denial
As far as denials go, this one was emphatic, strenuous and categorical.
The Attorney-General Christian Porter told a press conference in Perth yesterday that he never had sexual relations with a 16-year-old girl he met at a debating event in Sydney 33 years ago, when he was 17.
She has accused him of rape.
The woman who made the allegation took her own life last year, and police in NSW have wrapped up their inquiry.
So is that the end of the matter?
Today on The Signal, as calls grow louder for further investigations, what will happen next?

  • Busting myths about Chinese Australians
The relationship between China and Australia is still in the pits, and there's deep suspicion here about Chinese influence campaigns.
So where does that leave Chinese Australians?
Today on The Signal, the scrutiny, and sometimes violence faced by members of the Chinese diaspora in Australia.
How they're treated and how they see not only themselves, but the actions of each country.

  • Will $500 million cure aged care?
Aged care in Australia needs to be rebuilt.
That's the recommendation contained in the final report of a royal commission that's spent years looking into the system's failings.
Released yesterday, the commissioners found a system "besieged by neglect" that leaves older Australians stuck on wait lists for years or abandoned them in care facilities set up to maximise profits.
All told, they make 148 recommendations for change.
But is anything going to improve?
Today on The Signal, we ask whether our aged care system can be fixed so it provides the care most of us will eventually need.

  • Another episode about alleged rape and politicians
There's a bipartisan meltdown underway when it comes to sexual assault.
On Friday it was the Coalition, with an anonymous letter accusing a cabinet Minister of raping a 16-year-old girl, back in 1988 before he entered Parliament.
Then late on Sunday, a Liberal Senator forwarded an allegation about a Labor MP to the Federal Police.
The Coalition is choosing carefully how to respond to this new allegation, and for the first time this year, Labor is in the same position.
So will the Government out the Minister in question, or hope the storm passes it by?

  • What Brittany Higgins started
Australia has been transfixed by the story of Brittany Higgins for almost a fortnight.
The former political staffer alleges she was raped in a minister's office inside Parliament House in 2019, and has now filed a formal complaint with police.
More allegations from other women against the man she named have followed, along with ongoing rounds of recriminations about how badly the case was handled, all giving rise to the clear impression that something is very wrong in Parliament House.
So is anything going to change?
Today on The Signal, we look into the case that might just trigger some desperately needed reform for women in Australian politics.
