  • Where are all the electric cars?
The technology keeps getting better, but Australia's electric vehicle uptake has been incredibly slow.
For most people, it's still way too expensive.
So should the Government be helping bring the cost down?
Today on The Signal, the arguments for and against electric vehicle subsidies.
And with or without them, does it add up, financially speaking, to own one yet?

  • Are Australia’s dietary rules right?
We all remember the food pyramid, but is it right for everyone?
Australia’s dietary guidelines were designed with the best of intentions, to advise us how much of what to eat.
The problem is we’re not all the same, and some doctors are arguing it’s time to make some big changes.
So should we rewrite the rules?
    Featured:
Dr James Muecke, Ophthalmologist and 2020 Australian of the Year
Dr Alexandra Jones, Research fellow in food policy and law at the George Institute for Global Health

  • Is Russia's vaccine better than ours?
In 1957, the Russians won the space race when they launched their satellite, Sputnik.
In 2020, they claimed they'd won a different race, launching the first mass vaccination program against COVID-19, which they named Sputnik V.
Initially, scientists were sceptical, not least because the Russians hadn't published any data about the jab, and because their rollout looked suspiciously fast.
But now that the data is in, it turns out Sputnik V looks pretty good.
So how does it measure up to Australia's options, as more and more vaccine-resistant COVID-19 strains emerge?

  • Plan B to ban Trump from office
Donald Trump is widely expected to be acquitted in his second impeachment trial beginning this week, but Democratic strategists have a backup plan.
There are growing expectations that the former President might be pursued using a little known section of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution to ban him from holding office again.
Today on The Signal, what to expect from this week's trial in the US Senate, and the next chapter in his opponents' playbook.

Bruce Ackerman, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, Yale University

  • Being 'proud' of Collingwood
Collingwood is one of Australia's biggest, oldest and richest sporting clubs, and now it's become known for something else: a history of "distinct and egregious" racism.
Last weekend, an independent report prompted by former player Héritier Lumumba's experiences of racism at Collingwood was finally released, prompting an official apology.
But the club's President Eddie McGuire also bungled the response, saying the release of the report made him "proud".
So how did Collingwood get to this point?
And what does its racism scandal say about the AFL and Australia more broadly?

  • Myanmar's mystery coup
Myanmar is having a recurring nightmare.
The country has endured more years of military dictatorship than democratic rule, but this week's coup still came as a surprise.
Its leader Aung San Suu Kyi is believed to be under house arrest, and other political leaders were also detained by the military in raids on Monday.
So is this the end of Myanmar's democracy project, or will the Burmese people fight back?
    Featured:
Aye Min Thant, Burmese-American journalist, Yangon
Dr Justine Chambers, Associate Director, Myanmar Research Centre, Australian National University

  • Where does GameStop stop?
Three weeks ago, pretty much nobody knew about the share price of the US gaming retailer GameStop.
    Now, it's making global headlines.
Thanks to a ragtag army of investors from a Reddit forum called r/WallStreetBets, GameStop's share price has risen 1,400% since the start of last month, stunning hedge funds and leaving them billions of dollars worse off.
So if a group of amateurs can bring some of the world's richest people to the brink of bankruptcy, what else could they do?
    Featured:
Robert Smith, Co-Host, Planet Money podcast, US National Public Radio

Would Facebook and Google really bail on us?
    If it's a bluff, it's a big one.
The tech giants are threatening to dramatically scale back services if the Government forces them to pay for news.
As yet, the Government's showing no sign of backing down.
So who's in the right, and will they go through it?

  • Who's running the rabble?
As it was unfolding, the storming of the US Capitol building looked like the very definition of chaos.
But now that the dust has settled, we're learning just how organised it was.
So who was pulling the strings, and how?
Today on The Signal, the planning behind the moment when the seat of American democracy was overrun.
