  • So your caliphate has collapsed. What now?
Islamic State is about to disappear off the map and thousands of men, woman and children who stayed until the bitter end are finally emerging.
Life is about to change a lot for any ISIS supporters who survive the collapse of the caliphate.
So what happens to them now?
Many of them, including, women and children will spend years in refugee camps, as their countries of origin struggle to decide whether to take them back.

  • Could Brexit kill people?
Brexit is creeping up at an alarming rate, and there's still no deal in place.
On March 29, The United Kingdom is legally bound to leave the European Union, almost three years after 52% of British people voted for it.
How chaotic could that process be if there's no deal? Will the nation grind to a halt? Could people even die?
There's a chance the whole thing could be postponed, or maybe even put to another referendum.
Today's episode of The Signal is your cheatsheet on the whole Brexit disaster, as it stands.

  • Killing people to save animals
There's a bloody, decades-old war raging all over the world right now, and you've probably never heard of it.
The ferocity of that fight has landed the conservation group ,WWF, best known for their cute panda logo and earnest ad campaigns, in a lot of trouble.
In a story published yesterday, Buzzfeed alleges that individuals and groups working with and for WWF in several countries have maimed, tortured and murdered, in an attempt to protect wildlife.
And there's plenty of evidence that rangers themselves routinely suffer the same kind of violence.
Today on the Signal, we visit the war that's waged in the name of conservation, through the eyes of someone who’s been on the front lines.

  • Is this Islamic State's death rattle?
Islamic State is on the brink of territorial collapse, five years after it established a Caliphate in Iraq and Syria.
The US President Donald Trump says the group is beaten, but analysts are warning its power has morphed, rather than disappeared.
There are estimates thousands of the group's fighters and followers remain in the region, and that more have returned to their home countries, creating a jihadist diaspora.
Already there are signs that ISIS leadership is regrouping in Northern Iraq, to oversee an entrenched insurgency and prove their enduring power to the world.
So what's left of Islamic State? What's their end game? And what are their chances of achieving it, with US troops out of the way?

So just how much damage did Michael Cohen do?
How many investigations involving Donald Trump are there? and what's the worst-case outcome for the President?

  • Are Catholics in denial about George Pell?
George Pell's spent his first night in jail, as his lawyer prepares to launch his appeal against his conviction on five child sexual abuse charges.
In spite of the unanimous verdict, a lot of Australians, some Catholic and some powerful, aren't convinced of his guilt.
    So what's their logic?
At the same time, George Pell's lawyers haven't given up, even as his bail is revoked and he's moved to prison to await sentencing.
His legal team is making arguments that seem at times to contradict Pell's claims of innocence.
We unpack their strategy and find out what the next steps are for Australia's best known Catholic.

  • George Pell: the story we couldn't tell - until now
The world finally knows that George Pell has been convicted of child sex abuse.
Back in December, the man in charge of Vatican finances, a former Archbishop of Melbourne and Sydney, and Australia's most senior Catholic, was found guilty on five counts of sexually abusing two choir boys in Melbourne in 1996.
Up until now, a planned second trial on separate charges meant there was a strict suppression order in place, prohibiting the media from reporting on the verdict, in case it was prejudicial.
But with the second trial dropped, the suppression order has been too.
Today, The Signal speaks to one of only a few reporters who watched the trial unfold first hand to hear exactly how it played out.

    And what's the catch?

  • Are we OK with selling weapons to the Saudis?
Australia wants to become a top global defence exporter, and has already struck deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Both nations are involved in a bloody war in Yemen that has been widely condemned by world leaders and aid groups.
So is it possible Australian-made weapons could end up being used in the conflict?
And where should the Australian Government draw the line?
