  • Your NSW election cheat sheet
The NSW election is shaping up to be way closer than anyone predicted, with polls showing Liberal Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Labor Leader Michael Daley neck and neck.
So how did it come to this, especially with the economy doing so well?
And can the Coalition still hang on?
Today on The Signal, we're diving into the NSW election.
And with Antony Green's help, we'll explain how the state’s voting rules are meant to stop dodgy preference swaps -- and how the same system will apply at the federal election just around the corner.
    Featured:
Brigid Glanville, ABC NSW political reporter
    Antony Green, ABC elections analyst

  • Is time up for big tech?
Since the Christchurch massacre, Facebook has been accused of hosting hate speech and live streams of mass murder.
It's the latest in a long list of complaints about the platform, including concerns about privacy and anti-competitive behaviour.
That anger is being harnessed by US presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, who's part of a push to break up big tech.
So have Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon grown too big?
And if the US government tried to split them up, what kind of pushback might there be?

Ariel Bogle, Technology reporter, ABC Science unit
Professor Axel Bruns, Digital Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology

  • In the words of an ex-Nazi
It's been five days since New Zealand's worst terrorist mass shooting happened in Christchurch, and the hatred and ignorance that drove it remains very hard to understand.
The Australian man on trial for the killings was part of a white nationalist community online.
So how do people end up in racist extremist groups?
And how do they get out?
Today on The Signal, we talk to a former white supremacist.

Christian Picciolini, Founder, Free Radicals Project

  • Why US life expectancy is falling
For the first time since World War One, US life expectancy is falling.
It's partly to do with an increase in suicides, and partly to do with a spike in deaths caused by opioid overdoses.
It's a crisis that’s been rolling for 20 years now, but it’s found new urgency as more and more addicts make the switch to fentanyl, which is far stronger and more dangerous.
Today's episode traces the origins of the problem, back to the aggressive marketing tactics that drug companies pioneered in the 1990s.

Conor Duffy, North America Correspondent for the ABC

  • Australia's deadly far right
There are no words to adequately describe what happened in Christchurch on Friday.
But with a 28-year-old man from Grafton in New South Wales now on trial over the massacre, the world's attention is on Australia's far-right.
Today on The Signal, we take stock of what we know about the vile subculture, and look at what drives the hatred.
We also ask whether the political and media landscape in Australia is making things worse.
    Featured:
    Jason Wilson, journalist, The Guardian

  • Return of the r-word
Depending who you ask, it's either a made up term, or a warning bell for a recession.
Australia is officially in per-capita recession, but no-one can seem to agree on exactly what that means.
In today's episode, we try to not only answer that question, but also find out how bad it is.
It’s all happening at a crucial time for the Coalition, as it fights to hang on to power and talk up its economic record.
So is the Government right to sunny-side the latest figures? Or are they ignoring an important warning?
    Featured:
    Ian Verrender, ABC Business Editor

  • Is six years enough?
Cardinal George Pell is spending his 15th day in jail today after being sentenced yesterday to a prison term of six years with a non-parole period of more than three.
Plenty of sexual abuse survivors and their supporters think the sentence is too lenient.
    So how does it compare?
And what's the process judges use to decide what's fair?
    Featured:
Emeritus Professor Arie Freiberg, Chair, Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council
    14 min
  • Does a budget airline mean budget safety?
The deaths of 157 people in a plane crash in Ethiopia this week has the world asking some tough questions about how safe it is to fly.
It's not the first time there's been a problem with this type of plane, and in response to the disaster, more than a dozen airlines have grounded a new version of Boeing's most popular aircraft.
So how much do we actually know about what went wrong on flight ET302?
Was it a manufacturing problem? Or pilot training? Or something else altogether?
And what should you be looking out for the next time you're trying to book cheap flights overseas?
    Featured:
Geoff Dell, Associate Professor in Accident Forensics and Investigation, Central Queensland University
Steve Creely, South East Asia Bureau Chief, Airlineraitings.com

  • Are we really getting a new coal-fired power station?
There's another big public fight happening about coal in Australia.
It's had a multi million dollar, secretive PR push, and there's even talk of a new coal-fired power station in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales
It's a submission from two Chinese companies, as part of a Government call for new power generation projects.
So far the Government hasn't agreed to fund it, but they haven't ruled it out either, and some Nationals MPs are pushing for it to go ahead.
So just how likely is it that we're getting a new coal-fired power plant?
    Featured:
    Christopher Knaus, Reporter, The Guardian
Tim Buckley, Energy Market Analyst, Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis

  • Is evolution dead?
A second man has effectively been cured of HIV, but scientists are reluctant to call it a cure.
That's because the method is expensive, painful, and in some cases deadly.
But the so-called London Patient might hold clues about the best way to cure the virus in the long term.
The answers seem to lie in a HIV-resistant gene that emerged during the 16th century plague.
So how much do humans actually need disease in order to keep evolving?
Is it possible that we've wandered into a genetic cul-de-sac, and stalled the evolutionary process?

Professor Sharon Lewin, Immunologist, University of Melbourne
Associate Professor Stephen Corbett, School of Public Health, University of Sydney
