British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced he has quit as leader of the Labour party and will stay on as PM until a new leader is chosen.How did it go so wrong for a leader who was once so popular? 

Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as British Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, following months mounting pressure.

Making the announcement, he outlined the journey that saw Labour take power in July 2024, and said entering Downing Street was the "proudest moment" of his life.

Mr Starmer's popularity has plunged since then, prompting several senior cabinet ministers to urge him to step down.

He says he'll give full support to his successor -- expected to be former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham who won a by-election in the seat of Makerfield last week.
