The Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the cut to the fuel excise will be extended for another month, but at a lower rate.

In April, the 32 cents per litre fuel excise was cut to ease the pain of rising prices sparked by the US and Israeli war on Iran.

Mr Albanese has told Sky the discount will be tapered down to 16 cents per litre from the first of July.

The President of the Shire of Esperance in WA's south is urging the federal and state governments to work closely with local councils to help combat bird flu.

The virus was confirmed in Australia for the first time yesterday, following tests on two migratory birds found dying at a beach near the south coast town.

A community awareness campaign has already begun, aiming to educate the public on how to identify and report infected animals.

Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz is again closed over alleged ceasefire violations -- a claim the US military has disputed.

The move saw US President Donald Trump take to social media and threaten to impose tolls on the vital waterway if a final deal with Iran isn't reached in 60 days.

Tehran says it's closing the Strait in response to Israeli strikes in Lebanon that local media are reporting left at least 25 people dead.

Meanwhile, an Iranian delegation has arrived in Switzerland on the eve of talks with the United States.

US Vice President JD Vance is also on his way to the talks -- saying he is optimistic about making progress in negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and a ceasefire in southern Lebanon.

An independent economist says Australia should be investing in more long term solutions to global fuel shocks.

The federal government has announced the discount to the fuel excise will be extended for another month until the 2nd of August, but at a lower rate.

The 32 cents per litre fuel discount will drop to 16 cents per litre, and the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge will increase from free to 16 cents per litre.

Independent economist Nicki Hutley says she would like to see a more permanent solution.

Socceroos veteran Mat Ryan says he's disappointed not to be starting for Australia at the FIFA men's World Cup, but backs coach Tony Popovic's decision.

Popovic has opted for Patrick Beach in goal in Australia's two games so far, with the 22-year old goalkeeper producing impressive performances.

The Federal government is winding back its discount to the fuel excise, after three months of relief for motorists.

The governments discount on the fuel excise will remain in place until August but motorists won't receive the same savings.

The 50 per cent cut to the excise which reduced 32 cents off each litre of petrol will be halved to a 16 cent per litre reduction.

Both measures were meant to expire on the 30th of June.

In a post on Truth Social he's suggested the US could impose its own tolls if a broader deal is not reached, saying the money would be for what he calls "services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East."

Earlier, Iran's military said the Strait of Hormuz has been shut again, just days after reopening it,  because of continuing Israeli attacks on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. However, US Central Command maintains the waterway remains open.

Talks between Iran and the US are set to take place in Switzerland tomorrow.

The 50 percent cut to the fuel excise, which has reduced petrol prices by 32 cents per litre will halve to 16 cents per litre between the 1st of July and the 2nd of August before tapering off altogether.

The New South Wales Government says it's been working with industry to prepare for the arrival of bird flu for years.

A bird infected with the H5 bird flu virus was found washed up in southern Western Australia, and a seond suspected case is being tested.

Until now, Australia has been the only continent without a confirmed case.
