Many key elements characterize the design and implementation of an effective adolescent substance abuse treatment program. The treatment program at Newport Academy is designed to address those elements defined by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse as crucial and key in establishing effective, individualized, and comprehensive care for the treatment of adolescent substance abuse. This week Denise speaks with Thomas Lenox, the supervisor of the Tactical Diversion Squad in San Diego, CA. The mission of this organization is enforcement of the diversion of controlled pharmaceutical drugs from legitimate use to illegitimate use. Mr. Lenox is a special agent with the DEA. During the interview we will hear about what kind of government control there is for doctors who prescribe pain killers and other narcotics that can be abused and also some things parents can do to become informed and help to prevent abuse by young people. There are also resources for teens to become aware and proactive to prevent drug abuse.

Prescription Drug Abuse has become an epidemic in our country. Deaths from accidental overdose of prescription drugs has overtaken car accidents as the number one cause of accidental death in most states. It is important that the general public become aware that this is pervasive and not just someone else’s problem. We need to get the dialog going and keep it going.

Anne M. Fletcher, M.S., R.D. is a nationally known, award-winning health and medical writer, speaker, and consultant on the topics of weight management and lifestyle change, as well as treatment and recovery from addiction. She spent nearly five years writing her latest book, Inside Rehab, which is the topic of our interview today. As a registered dietitian with a B.S. degree from Cornell University and an M.S. from Drexel University, Anne has counseled hundreds of people with weight problems. She is a founding member of her county drug court in Minnesota and helped develop its treatment program, remaining on its steering committee. She serves on the advisory board for a high school for adolescents with substance use disorders and also serves on the editorial board for BASIS (Brief Addiction Science Information Source) of Harvard University’s Division on Addictions.

Anne also writes a blog for the professional magazine Psychology Today.

Sherrie and Michael Rubin’s son Aaron overdosed on oxycontin October 9th, 2005. He laid three and a half weeks in a coma, on life support. they began planning their son’s funeral when, against all medical odds, he began to open his eyes. Aaron survived, but the overdose has left him a quadriplegic and unable to speak.
