Today's Episode focuses on Analysis of Vote Share, Margin of Victory and Representativeness of Winners in Bihar Assembly election, 2020. We had earlier discussed in our fifth episode titled Bihar 2015 Elections - Analysis of Chances of Winning of Crorepati Candidates and Candidates with Criminal Cases, that the Bihar assembly election was to be the first in India where political parties had to furnish reasons for fielding candidates with criminal background. ADR’s report on analysis of vote share, margin of victory and representativeness of winners in Bihar Assembly election, 2020 highlights some crucial aspects that allows scope for further consideration with particular regard to the Supreme Court’s latest directions on criminality in the political system.

Good governance demands true and informed choice by the voters at the time of elections and not the one swayed by money. This episode will focus on “ Abuse of money power in our electoral and political process: The problems, why there is a need for accountability and transparency, critical analysis and recommended reforms.”

Today’s episode focuses on the measures taken by ECI and social media platforms to regulate the political propaganda, political campaigns, political content and political advertisements on social media platforms. This episode also talks about the status of the implementation of the Supreme Court of India’s 13th February order.

In this episode, which is twelfth in the podcast series launched by ADR, we look at the donations from corporates (above Rs 20,000) to National parties for the FY 2018-19. Political parties considered in this analysis are BJP, INC, NCP, CPM & AITC. Though a National party, BSP has not been considered for analysis as the party has declared that it received no voluntary contributions above Rs 20,000 from any donor during this period as well as during the time period since 2004. CPI did not declare any income from corporates for FY 2018-19 and hence has not been taken up for analysis for this period. Donations from corporates to National parties increased by 133% from the period between 2004-12 to 2018-19.

Criminal elements have been playing a major role in the electoral process in India both as candidates for elections and as party workers. Having a Parliamentarian who is charged with a serious criminal case is not only immoral and unethical but the while notion is so abhorrent and hideous. It is after all the electorate, which has to suffer on account of “criminalization of politics” and often can do little but helplessly participate in the election of the mighty and moneyed criminal elements. This episode will focus on “Increasing criminality in politics: Present legal and constitutional provisions, recent Supreme Court judgments, critical analysis and recommended reforms.”
