  • Affiliate Buzz #278 – Celebrating 10 Years of Affiliate Buzz – A Look Back to the Early Days of Podcasting
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz, has been podcasting since before the word “podcast” even existed! In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, James and Arlene Martell celebrate 10 years running as the hosts of the Affiliate Buzz podcast.
Listen in as they share the story of how it all got started as well as some of the memories that have been made over the past decade as they’ve worked online full-time with tremendous success.
A Family Tradition Inspired by Travel
As James points out, a common passion among affiliate marketers seems to be a love of travel. The Martells are definitely no exception – they have enjoyed travelling all over the world thanks to affiliate marketing, enjoying frequent “break-ations” as they attend conferences and other industry events.
As a result, Arlene has developed the habit of collecting Christmas ornaments from all of the different places they have visited. This habit has developed into a well-loved family tradition. James and Arlene talk about how much fun it is to think back on all of the places they’ve been able to see as they hang the ornaments on the tree each year.
A Desire To Teach Others About Affiliate Marketing
James and Arlene’s efforts to teach, inform, and inspire others interested in affiliate marketing didn’t start out with podcasting. They actually began by offering a weekly training in their local area each Wednesday.
The two go on to talk about how this weekly course was very successful, so successful that it was actually too busy for them to keep up with. So they decided to write an ebook that would offer the same information to others wanting to learn more about affiliate marketing, without having to actually be present to do the teaching.
Publishing Online is Easier Than Ever Before!
Publishing the ebook was a process – much more complicated than it is today, James explains. Initially they thought they’d be spending about a month or two on the project, but it ended up taking over 6 months when all was said and done. James tells the story of how the ebook launched without a lot of action, and then suddenly exploded with multiple sales out of the blue much later.
A similar theme came to be with the process of publishing the podcast – it was initially a pretty time intensive process to just get one episode published:

    * Shows were scheduled for the 1st and 15th of every month.
    * They would have to arrange a conference call with the operator to have it recorded.
    * The operator would upload the file to the FTP server for them to download.
    * Dennis would add the intro and outro and perhaps edit as necessary.

The group would have to create a low speed and high speed streaming file as well as well as one available for download – this was before high-speed internet and MP3s were the norm!
Now, it’s all so much easier, thanks to vast advances in software and the Internet in general. As James puts it, “All we have to do is show up.” since partnering with Webmaster Radio.
Listen in as James and Arlene share the story of getting the first couple of episodes recorded and published. The first episodes are actually still online! The second show was recorded from Maui on James and Arlene’s first vacation as affiliates after 15 years without one.

  • Affiliate Buzz #277 – *Important* Changes to Anchor Text Rules
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz, wants you to know how important high quality backlinks are if you want to achieve high rankings in the SERPs. With Google’s ongoing changes, it’s critical to stay on top of what’s working.
In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, he and Arlene, James’s wife and co-host, talk about the new rules of anchor text since Google’s big Panda and Penguin updates as well as an exciting, limited-time offer for 5 free PAD articles for webmasters looking to build high-quality backlinks.
Working From Home – Flexibility for Unexpected Emergencies
Arlene is returning to the show as co-host after a 3-week absence, and starts off the episode by talking about what’s been keeping her so busy. The Christmas season is quickly approaching, of course, which adds a lot to every mom’s to-do list. Not so pleasant, however, is one of the other reasons Arlene has been busy: their daughter, Victoria, was recently in a car accident.
No parent want to get that phone call! Arlene tells the story, mentioning, “Thank goodness we work from home. James and I were in our vehicle and on the scene of the accident within about two minutes.” Thankfully, nobody involved was hurt. The process of dealing with insurance and finding a new car for Victoria has taken up a lot of time, so the ability to have control over their schedule is something the Martell family is thankful for this week.
    The Business of Backlinks
James and Arlene have worked from home together for over a decade, and for the past couple of years a big part of their business is building backlinks for clients through their Professional Article Distribution (PAD) system. Their ongoing work in this area gives them plenty of hands-on insight to what’s working – and what’s not – with the anchor text being used to build backlinks.
James describes the approach that they've been taking for the last few years with the PAD system:

    * Identify unique anchor text keywords for the website.
    * Insert 1-2 of these keywords into a well-written, professional article.
    * Distribute articles to quality, high-ranking websites that allow guest posts.

This approach has proven to be very successful as the Martells go about building backlinks to their own and their clients’ websites. Recently, however, James has noticed that the sites that are doing the best are those where one important change is made to this system.
James talks about this change and how webmasters can implement it in their own backlinking strategies.
Changes to the Anchor Text Rules
James and Arlene further discuss the PAD system strategies and how it has worked for them over the past few years. They talk further in detail about some of the situations that can come up with their team as they produce, edit, and distribute the articles they use.
The Martells don’t just use the PAD system to build backlinks to their own websites – they also do the same for clients as well. As a part of this service, they are currently offering a promotion – The “Taxman Special” for webmasters to receive 5 professionally written, high-quality PAD articles, free of charge.
They’ll handle everything from getting the article written to having it published, giving you 5 incredibly high-quality backlinks to your website at no cost to you. Listen in to find out how to take advantage of this offer. This offer is the perfect way to stay on top of the new anchor text rules discussed in this podcast.
On a final note, this season marks the 10 year anniversary of Affiliate Buzz anniversary. The first episode was recorded in a hotel room – 3 years before the term “podcast” was even coined. Tune in to the next edition of Affiliate Buzz to hear the rest of the story.

  • Affiliate Buzz #276 – A Source of FREE Content for Your Site
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz, has over a decade of experience as a full time internet marketing and wants you to know that content is still king. Coming up with fresh, unique content to put out on a consistent basis can be a struggle, however, for even the most motivated and creative webmasters.
In this Affiliate Buzz, James chats with Jonathan Goodman, founder and president of Halyard Consulting, about how you can quickly and easily come up with new and quality sources of content to achieve online success. Jonathan holds several business degrees and has been produced several websites for Fortune 500 Companies.
Getting Inspired by Attending and Speaking at Conferences
Jonathan is a returning guest and has also talked with James about Semantic Markup Language as well as Search Engine Marketing on Google on Affiliate Buzz. He starts off the talk by sharing a bit about a one day conference he recently attended, Web Marketing Summit in Vermont. Much was discussed at the event, including:

    * “SEO efforts that really, truly matter”
    * Penguin and Panda algorithm changes with Google

James has also attended many conferences. He talks about the very first conference he attended in Santa Barbara with Commission Junction University. Now, he attends several per year and speaks at events as well.
Jonathan uses http://Lanyard.com to find events where he can speak. The service integrates with social media and makes it incredibly simple to stay up to date with events that are looking for speakers. He now speaks at about 6 conferences per year.
Finding New Sources of Content at Industry Events
Affiliates are always in need of content. Conferences can be a great place to find new sources of great content and get inspired.
Jonathan, for example, records his own presentations and then goes back and has them transcribed into articles for his websites. He puts several hours of research into producing his presentations, so of course it makes sense to get as much use out of that content as possible!
How Can Listeners Glean Content from These Sources?
Even if you don’t speak at conferences, you can still use the information shared to produce fantastic content for your own website.
Many conferences actually release sessions for free in video or audio format. With the amount of detail and thought that goes into presenting this information, there’s no reason not to take advantage of this content-rich resource. James and Jonathan share how to do just that - without plagiarising or behaving unethically.
Podcasting is more popular than ever - you can find podcasts on pretty much any topic imaginable. James shares a couple of resources to find podcasts that deal with your specific niche. He also shares tips for outsourcing this process by hiring a writer to create content based off of podcasts as well.
This isn’t about “stealing” content or plagiarising anything - the methods James and Jonathan share all give full credit to the podcaster while keeping the content unique for your own purposes.
The pair touches on using some of the same methods to write Ebooks. Ebooks can be another lucrative income source for webmasters, though creating them can be a challenge. Repurposing your existing content streamlines the process.
Jonathan concludes the talk by talking about how he’s using directories as another source of both content and income.
Halyard Consulting is an internet marketing firm that helps companies achieve higher search engine rankings through backlinks and content management through WordPress.

  • Affiliate Buzz #275 – How to Avoid or Recover Your Site from a Malware Attack
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz podcast, knows firsthand how serious a malware attack can be - in fact, it can potentially bring your business to a screeching halt. Knowing how to handle these situations is absolutely to your advantage.
In this Affiliate Buzz, Co-host Arlene Martell starts off the talk by discussing the upcoming holiday season and shopping online for gifts. She recently got a great deal on a great kids’ play kitchen set - the KidKraft Grand Gourmet Kitchen Center - that she looks forward to having in their home for when two of their favorite kids come over to play.
Arlene shares the process she uses when shopping online. She always shops around and particularly focuses on reading reviews of different products before buying.
In this case, she checked Craigslist in her shopping research as well. Finding a play kitchen that is built well and will last years to come was the goal, so naturally those being sold on Craigslist that were just a few years old and in very poor condition were not the brands to be looking at.
Arlene is one of many shoppers who are getting geared up for the upcoming holiday season. With the volume of shoppers increasing tremendously over the coming months, it’s an incredibly inconvenient time to be dealing with website security issues like malware.
    The Dreaded Red Screen
Long term Microsoft users probably remember the “dreaded blue screen” that would come up as a result of certain errors of the operating system. Similarly, webmasters today need to be wary or the “red screen” that Google applies to websites that are compromised with malware. Instead of landing on a page within a website, users are warned to turn away to avoid malware.
Clearly, this is an affiliate’s worst nightmare, especially with the holiday shopping season just getting under way!
James and Arlene recently found this problem appear on not just one of their websites, but every website that they had hosted on a particular server. The frustrating truth is that there are hackers out there that seem to attack websites in this fashion almost as a sport. In the Martells’ case, the mess took an entire week to clean up.
Arlene has been receiving emails lately from other webmasters who have gone through this lately as well. If you don’t know what to do or where to start, it’s easy to panic when you find that your website has been compromised. Either way, these attacks lead to a significant amount of lost productivity.
    Getting Rid of Malware
As James points out, getting rid of malware on your website server isn’t exactly complicated - it’s just tedious and time consuming. He shares step by step how he went about cleaning up his own websites in the recent attack.
One of the websites that really helped in the cleanup was Sucuri.net. The resource was incredibly helpful in the process of fixing up the websites that were compromised. They were able to get their sites back on track without even having to use their backups.
Using Sucuri made the process much more simple in a few ways. James simply put through a malware removal request and gave the service access to the server.
Signing up with Sucuri costs $89, which covers not just site clean-up, but an entire year of support and monitoring as well.
What Increases Risk for Malware Attacks?
There are a few risk factors that many webmasters might already have on their websites and be unaware of:

    * Old, outdated websites that are just sitting dormant on your server.
    * WordPress themes with security risks.
    * Out of date scripts.
    * Not updating WordPress.

James and Arlene conclude the talk by talking a little bit about their upcoming “breakation” as they attend Affiliate Summit. James will give a talk on Sunday morning, when the conference begins.

  • Affiliate Buzz #274 – Award-Winning Affiliate Managers Share Success Tips and Strategies
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz, has over 12 years of full-time experience in the affiliate marketing industry. He’s seen countless changes take place in the industry during this time - the internet world is a completely different playing ground than it was a decade ago.
In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, James chats with Sarah Bundy and Carolyn Kmet as they share their highly valuable insight, picked up over the years. Sarah and Carolyn are two powerhouse industry vets with more than 25 years of experience in the affiliate marketing industry.
Sarah’s affiliate marketing blog, SarahBundy.com, was included in the top 25 blogs on affiliate marketing in 2012. Sarah is a returning guest to Affiliate Buzz and an award-winning performance marketing specialist. She is also the founder and CEO of several successful businesses in the industry.
Sarah is also an instructor in The School of Internet Marketing. She is currently working on her first book, The Art of Performance Marketing.
Carolyn Kmet has been working in the industry since 1999 and is experienced in all aspects of the industry. She’s worked with several large and booming businesses including ShareASale and Groupon. She has worked closely with Sarah and is the vice president of performance marketing at All Inclusive Marketing as well.
Connect with Your Program Manager for Greater Success
As affiliate program managers, Carolyn and Sarah work with affiliates to connect them with successful programs and tools for their approach to marketing. Affiliates should feel comfortable reaching out and connecting with their program managers, but for some reason are often hesitant to do so.
Sarah shares her experiences with working with affiliates and offers advice about connecting directly with affiliates - often they are the ones that do the best. Working as a team gives some affiliates that edge over the thousands of affiliate marketers who are simply doing the same old thing.
The benefits of connecting with your affiliate program manager are many:

    * Get access to new information right away
    * Discuss marketing strategies that work best for the product and market you’re dealing with
    * Collaborate on events to bring in new traffic and customers

Sarah also offers her recommendations on how affiliates should be gearing up for the upcoming holiday season. Affiliate programs do often offer holiday-specific marketing tools and it’s a huge benefit to you to use them. She and Carolyn even share their favorite up-and-coming affiliate programs for the holidays.
Carolyn points out that this is one area where the ability to schedule content in advance becomes incredibly useful. Anticipating trends is the key to success for many affiliates. Carolyn talks about how to apply this trick to both the holiday season and in the market in general.
Mobile web traffic, for example, is growing at a tremendous rate and those affiliates who are getting in on this trend now are seeing the benefits.
Listen in as well to hear exactly what questions to be asking your affiliate manager to get insight that will help you get ahead.
Putting out fresh, unique content on a regular basis is as important as ever. Sarah talks about how to stay consistent with your content creating efforts.
    Social Media Marketing for Affiliates
Social media has exploded as more and more people are using the internet and mobile devices as part of their daily life. The introduction of the smartphone, in particular, has definitely impacted the effectiveness of social marketing.
Thinking outside the box with different affiliate programs is another great way to get ahead. Many successful affiliates go beyond the built-in market for their merchant and view the company more as inventory, tapping into new markets that others are ignoring.

  • Affiliate Buzz #273 – YouTube, An Untapped Source of Tremendous Traffic
In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, James sits down with Dan Maynard as the two discuss YouTube as an untapped source of tremendous traffic. What many fail to realize is that YouTube is the second most used search engine online today. With 4 billion video views per day, there’s no reason not to tap into that traffic.
People aren’t just watching YouTube videos to be entertained. Many are also looking to YouTube to learn new things, find information, and research products before buying.
Laurie Cousins, a server at Sawbucks Pub, which James frequents, joins the beginning of the talk to discuss her experience making her first purchase online. She’s not alone. Many people haven’t yet embraced the Internet. It’s easy for affiliate marketers, who live online, to forget that not everyone is quite so plugged in.
Dan, a returning guest, has been an SEO since 1999 and is a member of SUPER BootCamp. With mobile web use growing at a fantastic speed, he and James predict a tsunami of online sales and traffic by late adopters like Laurie. Dan mentions that much of this traffic will come from video content.
Video Content is Easier that You Think
Affiliates are often hesitant to dive into video, but it’s really not as complicated as it seems. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on editing or create a masterpiece to see the benefits of producing video content.
Dan shares his story about getting started with YouTube. He began using SEO on his YouTube videos while marketing a piano lesson and quickly saw new traffic and sales coming in. The growth took off as he developed his strategy even further. Listen in as he shares what he has learned along the way.
    Harnessing Search Traffic on YouTube
Dan goes on to share exactly how to optimize your videos and build backlinks to your YouTube channel. As he points out, video content can help you speed up the process of ranking well in Google’s search results, rather than waiting for months and months to see your articles make their way into the rankings.
    Listen in to find out:

    * How to secure sales from your viewers on YouTube
    * How to optimize your video content for search, both on and off YouTube
    * What kinds of videos you can create, and how simple it can really be

Reviews are an especially simple way to share affiliated products on YouTube. Many customers appreciate the inside look video gives before making an online purchase. Video content can give you that extra edge over your competitors, by allowing you to share a more in-depth view of a product than is possible with a solely written review.
Dan has created Video Traffic Adrenaline to serve as a comprehensive resource on creating traffic-driving content. The book outlines everything you can do to succeed on YouTube. Dan’s wealth of experience and expert insight makes it a must have for affiliates who wish to get started with YouTube and increase traffic to their website.
Dan concludes this edition of Affiliate Buzz by sharing his experience with publishing and marketing his Kindle ebook. Like video content creation, he says the process was much simpler than he originally expected.
It’s important for affiliate marketers to diversify the types of content being offered in order to reach as many people as possible. Ebooks and video are allowing us to do just that.
If you’re eager to learn how to drive YouTube traffic to your website by creating your own video content, listen in to learn expert tips and strategies that will get you started on the right track.

  • Affiliate Buzz #272 – Expert Insight from Search Engine Marketing Expo 2012 – New York
In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, James Martell talks with Jonathan Goodman about some of the tips, techniques and predictions taken away from SMX 2012.
Jonathan holds several business degrees and has been creating websites since the “Dawn of the Internet.” He has worked with Fortune 500 companies and is currently the president of Halyard Consulting.
SMX East 2012, an industry conference on search marketing took place recently, with speakers sharing expert insight to attendees with a broad range of levels of expertise.
Google - On A Rampage to Improve User Experience
The abundant changes in Google’s algorithm as of late are no secret. It seems that as soon as webmasters get their bearings after one change, another one pops up and stirs things up again. Search engine experts at SMX 2012analyzed these changes and came to some exciting conclusions.
While Google always keeps us guessing a little bit, one speaker summed up two of the updates quite well, pointing out that Panda affected content while Penguin was all about links. Jonathan expands on how websites were affected by these updates and what some webmasters are doing to effectively recover.
Content is Still King - But Google’s Taking it Even Further
Jonathan discusses differentiated content. Over the years, one thing has remained true when it comes to SEO: content is king. It appears that as of late, Google is cracking down and taking it a step further. To succeed online, content needs to be unique and it needs to be ADDING to the conversation. The days of spinning articles for search engine rankings are over.
James and Jonathan discuss Google’s new disavow tool, an apparent “second chance” for webmasters who have dabbled in not-exactly-white-hat techniques. Jonathan outlines who exactly should be using the tool and when.
Google Predictions - What to Look Forward To
Jonathan offers some exciting predictions about what to look forward to in the coming months. He points out exactly what he believes Google will be cracking down on in the coming months after hearing what the experts had to say at SMX east.

    * thin content with a bunch of links
    * bad PR balance when it comes to backlinks
    * irrelevant infographics
    * low relevance blog posts
    * repetitive keywords and anchor text

One thing is still true: it’s all about bringing the user value! If you want to be successful online, you absolutely must make sure your content is doing just that.
Jonathan’s internet marketing firm, Halyard Consulting specializes in building and maintaining WordPress websites as well as helping companies rank better in search engines by producing great content and building quality backlinks.

  • Affiliate Buzz #271 – Gain Momentum Toward Online Success with an Organized Publishing Schedule
James Martell, host of the Affiliate Buzz, knows what a remarkable difference a solid plan can make when it comes to doing business online. With the need to be consistently adding fresh content to your websites, this is particularly true when it comes to mapping out what content you’ll be creating and when - the publishing schedule.
In this edition of Affiliate Buzz, James and Arlene talk about setting up a publishing schedule. They have been using one for years, and Arlene says they’d be lost without it. Having gone the more disorganized route of throwing up content on a whim, the two find that sticking to a schedule instead has been more beneficial.
Getting Organized - The Key to Consistent Success
James talks about the years when they “winged it.” That approach frequently led to burnout. Having a publishing schedule has smoothed things out and forces a more long term vision.
Adding fresh content to your websites on a regular basis is crucial. Thankfully, it’s doesn’t have to be a big job - little by little, by sticking to a publishing schedule, you can build your site up with your unique goals and vision in mind.
James and Arlene talk specifically about a 90 day schedule of daily, fresh content. James sees some of his students using it with great results. Despite all the changes in search algorithms and social media over the years, one thing remains true: Content is still king.
James encourages webmasters to start thinking about their website as a publishing hub. Your content starts there, but then you’re able to send out your articles to social media, newsletters, and even use it as the starting point to creating your own podcasts. Repurposing your content is a smart way to get the most “bang for your buck” whether you’re investing money or time into your content. Its easy to do when you have a plan in place!
Stay Focused! - Are You Making This Mistake?
Anybody can do this. It’s about getting systems in place where you’re consistently putting out fresh, unique, high-quality content, promoting that content, and building your list. As you build momentum, you’ll keep your followers focused on the content you’re putting out and gain new viewers through search and social media.
Arlene shares a real-life example of what goes wrong with many webmasters (or, would-be webmasters). She talks about some students who, in a way, “going to school professionally” online by listening to all the experts without implementing any of the information for themselves!
If you’re overwhelmed with everything that you know you should be doing, be sure that you’re not just listening to all the experts without actually putting what you’re learning into practice. There’s a lot of “noise” online, and if you try to listen to everyone, you will fail. Arlene explains how to get out of this rut:

    * step away from the computer and the courses
    * write down your goals
    * how to achieve
    * don’t “mix strategies” from all the experts
    * don’t get overwhelmed by listening to too many people
    * limit your time “learning” and be sure that you’re actually taking steps to meet your own goals

A Publishing Schedule Could Be The Missing Link
Arlene talks about what she’d do if she was starting a new website today. Another effective type of schedule to follow is the “daily themes” where you’re putting out a specific type of article on certain days. This takes some of the wondering out of deciding what to publish.
There’s a tendency to work frantically in this business - but it doesn’t have to be that way. Having a publishing schedule frees up your mind to focus on the other aspects of running a business.
A schedule also allows you to produce timely content, well enough in advance that you can do it really well. In particular, the busy halloween and christmas shopping seasons are great to produce content for.

  • Affiliate Buzz #270 – Increasing Website Traffic By Paying Attention to the Details!
James Martell, founder of The School of Internet Marketing, sees many webmasters skipping over critical steps of content publishing and killing their traffic-building efforts. Listen in to this edition of Affiliate Buzz as he and his wife, Arlene, talk about little details that can make a big difference in your search engine traffic.
As James points out, it can be easy to get in the habit of just throwing up content on your website without paying proper attention to search engine optimization. While it’s great to be regularly producing fresh content, your efforts are significantly diminished when you’re not implementing basic SEO strategies.
James and Arlene also talk about the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend in Canada. They’ll be hosting the family dinner. Arlene has even applied one of their most used business strategies to the preparations and will be “outsourcing” the pie-baking this year to their daughter, Shelby.
Growing Traffic Sources: Social Media and Mobile Web
James mentions a few notes about the Affiliate Buzz social media presence. Listeners can now tweet questions related to affiliate marketing with the new twitter hashtag, #AffiliateBuzz
Affiliate Buzz is also growing on Facebook - the page recently recently surpassed 1000 likes. James elaborates on the remarkable growth of Facebook, particularly over the last couple of years; Facebook officially has over 1 billion active users, 600,000,000 of whom are using the social networking site on mobile devices.
James and Arlene expand on how important it is for webmasters to start developing mobile versions of their websites. With mobile internet use expected to surpass desktop and laptop use by 2015, you don’t want to miss out on this growing source of traffic.
Are You Killing Your Traffic By Ignoring These Simple Details?
Arlene sees a lot of bloggers ignoring on-page SEO and other key components of optimizing content to bring in natural search traffic. It doesn’t take a lot of time to make sure that an article is formatted correctly. You could literally be throwing away tons of traffic by skipping this step. To format your posts correctly, keywords should appear:

    * In title and meta tags
    * In the headline
