  • Affiliate Buzz #300 – Are You Ready? How to Prepare for a Profitable Q4
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz, host James Martell, welcomes guest Carolyn Kmet (@Catango), CMO from All Inclusive Marketing, to discuss how to prepare for the always important yearly fourth quarter.
Q4 is a busy time for many thanks to back-to-back holidays like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. For affiliate managers that means a lot of opportunity to work with retailers to prepare and strategize their year-to-year bottom line. Take for instance Google which enjoyed a 36% increase in revenue from 2011 to 2012.
Looking to the Past to Prepare for the Future
Listen to Carolyn explain why before preparing for this year’s Q4, affiliate managers need to begin by looking at last year’s Q4. Just looking at the bottom line is not enough. Some of the things she suggests looking at include:

    * Promotions and their level of success
    * What drove traffic last year
    * Products that sold last year

Listen to Carolyn expand on the above points and explain why inventory, sales, and what drove traffic are three different things. She also explains to James what data to track from the current year and how to compare it to the data from last year’s Q4.
QF from Preparation to Post-Holiday Drop-Off
Carolyn cautions not to get so bogged down by Q4 data that it hinders how you prepare for the upcoming season. Tune in to hear her tips on how to prevent this from happening so that focus can be placed on the real priorities, like marketing products that will increase your bottom line.
Q4 really gets the momentum going for website traffic, starting with Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving in the United States) right up until the last date to ship for products to arrive in Christmas. Some other points Carolyn discusses with James include:

    * What to expect after the holiday rush especially during January and February
    * Taking advantages of holidays outside of the United States (such as Boxing Day)
    * When is the best time to start planning for next year’s Q4

Also listen to the top 3 things that retailers should be doing to prepare for the upcoming Q4 season. You will not want to miss the things Carolyn suggests doing to ensure a successful Q4 season. For example, don’t start Q4 by experimenting with a new shopping cart on your site!
Some of the Things Merchants Can Do to Help Affiliates
James and Carolyn discuss the relationship between affiliates and their merchants. With a good relationship between the two, both can enjoy the benefits of a successful Q4 season! In this episode you will also hear James explain why research is one of the pivotal elements of a great relationship between merchants and affiliates.
Tune in now to hear all the useful advice shared by James and Carolyn in this episode of Affiliate Buzz. Whether you are an affiliate, a network manager, or a retail merchant this advice can help your marketing campaign!

  • Affiliate Buzz #299 – Profitable B2B Opportunities for Affiliates
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz, host James Martell, talks with Chris Sanderson, General Manager of the Bangkok, Thailand-based internet marketing firm AMWSO (http://www.amwso.com) about profitable and often overlooked B2B opportunities for affiliate marketers.
AMWSO is a professional affiliate management company that specializes in outsourced affiliate marketing services for firms around the globe. The company also provides program management and other web-based marketing services that bring together affiliates and merchants.
Listen to the two professionals discuss B2B, a three-letter acronym that stands for “Business to Business”. B2B is a type of business franchise that, despite being around for a little while now, is still expanding and growing to provide opportunities for affiliate marketers.
    Examples of Current B2B Opportunities
James and Chris discuss some of the profitable B2B opportunities that are often overlooked in the world of affiliate marketing. Some of the programs they mention that you could use to bring business to your company include:

    * Paychex - An award-winning payroll service for businesses who do not want to use an in-house accounting firm for tax services, HR services and benefit administration, Paychex offers a lead-based program to affiliate marketers.
    * RedCappi - A hip and uncomplicated Los Angeles-based email marketing company, RedCappi offers easy do-it-yourself email marketing services that pays $2 per lead in addition to a $50 bounty on every sale made through their affiliate program.
    * Exotissimo Travel - A leading Inbound Tour Operator in Southeast Asia, Exotissimo.com offers package and tailor-made travel arrangements for travelers and has one of the highest Pay-Per-Lead commissions in the travel affiliate program niche.

Tune in now to hear Chris explain more about some of the programs you could connect to through AMWSO and why he feels affiliates still avoid the B2B market, including reasons such as B2B seems too difficult to get passionate about the topics, or because seeing a commission from B2B takes longer.
B2B Requires Use of Different Marketing Strategies
When you dive into the world of B2B opportunities, on the surface it does not look that different than being an affiliate for retail products. Listen to James and Chris review the subtle differences for affiliate marketing strategies such as:

    * Creating a site that links to the B2B affiliate opportunity
    * Adding relevant content to the site - even if it means outsourcing
    * Using keywords to help drive traffic to the site

The commission payout for B2B sites is generally higher than it is for retail affiliates, which is why it is even more important to make use of the above strategies. However as Chris points out, B2B offers other benefits as well including less competition from other marketers and cheaper pay-per-click drives for more traffic.
How to Find These Overlooked B2B Opportunities
Listen to James and Chris discuss the different ways to find these otherwise overlooked B2B opportunities. Although finding these opportunities might seem challenging due to a lack of dedicated B2B-focused affiliate networks, it is hardly impossible.
For example LinkShare, a leader among affiliate marketing solution companies, offers some B2B opportunities. Commision Junction, an online advertising and internet marketing company, also offers some B2B prospects. And finally ShareASale offers a few leads on B2B as well.

  • Affiliate Buzz #298 – Hot Market Opportunities In Affiliate Marketing
In this episode of the Affiliate Buzz, founder of The School of Internet Marketing James Martell talks with Wade Tonkin, Affiliate Manager for League Stores at Fanatics (http://fanaticsaffiliates.com/) about hot market opportunities in affiliate marketing.
Although James and Wade’s paths have crossed at numerous conferences and over social networks like Facebook, this is Wade’s first time as an Affiliate Buzz guest. For a sports fan, Wade has the ultimate dream job as working with a site that sells any product with a sports league logo.
Championship games are a busy time for Fanatics! With the NBA finals right on top of the NHL finals in 2013, Wade recently spent extra time helping fans celebrate their teams’ wins by pushing out new banners on the site for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins.
In the World of Affiliate Marketing, Timing is Everything
Tune in to hear Wade explain the importance of having banners and text links out on time whether it is in regards to a championship game for a favorite sports team that went into double overtime or something time sensitive like a holiday or another special time of year. Some things you may find yourself updating include:

    * banners
    * links
    * keywords

Every moment that you delay with affiliate marketing, Wade explains, you are missing an opportunity. And as James adds, delaying going live with a new strategy even one day can mean the loss of a tremendous amount of income. That’s because it gives your competition the edge for gaining higher ranks on Google and other search engines.
How to Identify Hot Affiliate Marketing Opportunities
Listen to James and Wade explore the idea of how to identify hot affiliate marketing opportunities relating to other topics to help you gain an extra edge over your competition. Here are just a few of the things Wade suggests:

    * Have an event where a lot of people are paying attention to the outcome
    * Have some type of product or service relating to that event
    * Have access to traffic to take advantage of the opportunity to cash in quickly

Although a paid search is a good way to drive traffic fast when you want it, Fanatics doesn't allow use of this strategy, which forces affiliates to be a little more creative in their marketing campaigns. They might have to look into networking sites, email, or social networks, Wade explains.
The Importance of Positioning Yourself as an Authority
James explains that the goal of affiliate marketing should not be to make a commission from one person, and then to move on to the next target for another commission. The goal should be to position yourself as an authority in your specialty.
Listen to Wade suggest ways to pick up traffic and increase your chances of gaining repeat customers, like having a long term vision that includes building email lists with newsletters, building a social media presence, and having content of value on the site.
Once you gain the trust of the traffic that follows you online, you can start suggesting products to these people. For example, Wade explains how he finds the interests of sports fans who frequent Fanatics to help meet their needs with other affiliate opportunities as well.
Tune in now to listen to the entire conversation. Whether you plan to market sports jerseys or iPhone accessories, you are sure to benefit from its invaluable content as you take your affiliate marketing strategy to the next level!

  • Affiliate Buzz #297 – Building a Total Online Presence
In this episode of Affiliate Buzz, hosts James and Arlene Martell discuss the importance of having a total online presence while simultaneously tackling search ranking issues and using social media to drive traffic.
Arlene reflects that in the early days of internet marketing, developing traffic was as easy as putting blogs on your own site and adding backlinks back in. Today online marketers have a much tougher job of developing traffic, as indicated by the high volume of calls that come into the Martell’s help desk!
Internet Marketing Doesn't Have to Be Confusing
One common question is how does all this fit together? All this includes things like Google Authorship Markup, Google Plus, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media. Another common question is, do I even need all of these things to successfully develop traffic for my website?
James admits that he relates to these questions because it can be overwhelming. In the early days of the Internet there were a small handful of website providers, and if you optimized for one then you optimized for all three and it was relatively simple to rank highly.
Fitting everything together today is a bit more complicated. Some of the specific questions that Arlene hears, and some that you may have wondered a time or two yourself, include the following:

    * What is Google Authorship Markup and why is it important?
    * What is the difference between Google Authorship and Google Publisher?
    * How do Google rankings tie into social media, which have their own rankings?
    * Should websites be tied in to a Facebook page, and is it expensive?
    * What other social media should I connect to, and how can I update them all at once when I update my blog?

Tune in to hear James and Arlene explain that while all of this might seem overwhelming, by thinking of your website as a hub you can make changes just by adding content - which you are most likely already doing anyway.
What to Do Once You Have Everything Set Up
James explains that the best way to know what sites to connect to is to look at what your competitors are doing. If they are having success with Facebook and you are not even connected, for example, then you are going to be left behind.
Once you have everything set up, WordPress makes it easy to publish to all your social media networks at the same time. You can also use desktop dashboards like Hootsuite to update all your social media networks at once.
Another idea the Martells discuss is the Daily Traffic Blueprint, which is something they see a great need for - so much that they plan to make the topic its own course in The School of Internet Marketing. Among other things, this course would review:

    * How to perform self-analysis of SEO on your own website
    * Use the reports from the rankings data to know where to make changes
    * Adopt a daily plan for what to do Monday through Friday to build daily traffic

Whether your blog is already connected and has high rankings or you are scrambling just to make it to Page 1 of Google’s search listings, you can benefit from the advice in this podcast. If you want to drive more traffic to your site, then tune in now for some of the best tips the industry has to offer!

  • Affiliate Buzz #296 – Undistributed PAD Articles? A Solution.
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz, hosts James and Arlene Martell discuss what to do when you have leftover PAD articles sitting on your hard drive. PAD stands for Professional Article Distribution, and it’s a strategy that strategy that James and Arlene use to create quality backlinks for both themselves and their clients.
    The School of Internet Marketing
But before James and Arlene reveal the solution for those leftover PAD articles, they announce the recent launch of The School of Internet Marketing’s affiliate program. The program is headed by affiliate channel management company SmarterChaos, and offers recurring monthly commission for every sign up.
It is very easy to join! Just click the “Affiliates” link at the bottom of www.theschoolofinternetmarketing.com. Once approved, James and Arlene provide links for your site. When someone signs up through your link, you get paid every month they stay with the site! Other benefits include:

    * Learn how to take command of their online presence
    * James personally handles the BootCamp, Outsourcing Course, and Email Marketing Courses
    * Other high-demand course topics include Social Media Marketing, Building YouTube Traffic, and Build Your Website in a Weekend

James shares that in the U.S. alone there are 23 million small business owners. Whether you own a brick-and-mortar business or an online conglomerate, The School of Internet Marketing has something offer you!
The Effect a Podcast Can Have On Your Business
Although things like anchor-text rules change over time, backlinks are still important for getting search rankings. PAD articles offer the best opportunity for backlinks. James explains that when getting started, some take to internet marketing like ducks to water while others struggle to keep afloat.
Even established professionals with high-quality articles sometimes have trouble getting them distributed throughout the internet. One recent example happened on the morning of the podcast when a panicked client called Arlene. He needed some holiday-themed articles distributed before the holiday lest they become stale and irrelevant.
Despite much hard work, he still had nearly a dozen to distribute. Arlene pitched in and got the job done. If you find yourself in need of her expertise, here are the steps to take:

    * First contact Arlene by phone or email (found on the Help Desk at The School of Internet Marketing website)
    * Be prepared to show high-quality articles that are 600 – 700 words each
    * Arlene then gives you an estimate of how long it will take to distribute these articles

As James says, it is a real shame when there are a bunch of beautifully written PAD articles that go undistributed. Tune in to this episode of Affiliate Buzz now to hear more information about the different ways that James and Arlene can help your affiliate marketing program today!

  • Affiliate Buzz #295 – Impact Radius – Game Changing Technology
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz, host James Martell speaks with Todd Crawford, one of the original founders of Commission Junction and the co-founder of Impact Radius. The two discuss the game changing technology offered by Impact Radius and how it can help advertisers, affiliates, and advertisers.
While this is Todd’s first appearance on Affiliate Buzz, James first met Todd in 2002 when he attended his very first Commission Junction University. The two have kept in touch over the years and are excited to be sharing how Impact Radius is making a stir in the industry.
Impact Radius – From Concept to Completion
Todd first got into the industry when it was young and fast-moving. After leaving Commission Junction in 2006, he worked for a couple of different companies within the industry. But then at the begin of 2008 spent two years with the other co-founders at Impact Radius talking with industry workers to get an idea of what type of technology or different technologies could make life easier for them.
The end result was Impact Radius, a program that offers a suite of tools that requires just one login. James was first introduced to Impact Radius was in 2010 at Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas, where Todd was demonstrating and showing off the new piece of technology. James recalls that he immediately recognized it as being different than what the industry was accustomed to using.
The primary products that Impact Radius offers include:

    * Partner Manager – manages affiliates or other media partners
    * Tag Management Solution – deploys and manages tags across your entire site
    * Media Attribution Tool – gain insights into how your marketing channels interact
    * Call Tracking Tool – track performance by partner and source, or drive pay-per-call results

…as well as other solutions for marketers trying to improve their bottom line, agencies with needs related to things like outsourcing, and media partners wishing to connect with well-known brands.
How Impact Radius Differs from Other Platforms
Todd shares that an affiliate network is a media company that receives a piece of the action as a result from helping advertisers and media partners find each other and work together. Affiliate networks are tied either to the sales or commissions. Impact Radius is different because:

    * The company operates as a “software as a service”, or SAAS.
    * Pricing is based on quantity of how much you use the software, similar to a cellphone’s plan for data usage or text messaging.
    * Fully integrate all the tools offered by Impact Radius in one platform for better strategic insight.

The episode goes on to explain more about how using software such as Impact Radius can benefit your company. But the two also touch base on a topic that James discussed on a recent episode of Affiliate Buzz with guest speakers Matt Frary and Carolyn Kmet. That topic is the fallout with the recent announcement about the closure of the Google Affiliate Network. Tune in now to hear their thoughts about this industry-altering event!

  • Affiliate Buzz #294 – ViewBix, A Video Marketing Supercharger
In this episode of the Affiliate Buzz, host James Martell discusses tips and strategies to supercharge your video marketing with Adam Riemer, an Online Marketing Strategist. Specifically they discuss a tool called ViewBix and they also touch on using YouTube for video marketing as well.
The founder of Adam Riemer Marketing, LLC ,www.adamriemer.me, which handles e-commerce, marketing, strategy, and sales, Adam has over ten years of online marketing experience and is a trusted source in his field. He is often booked to speak on topics such as affiliate marketing, email optimization, and conversion rate optimization at venues internationally.
How to Supercharge Your Internet Videos
Adam represents a tool called ViewBix which he was introduced to a few years ago at an Affiliate Summit. He found the tool so impressive that what began as a request to turn a blog review at Adam’s site turned into Adam’s offer to market the product.
ViewBix allows you to take any video from your website or video hosting service (like YouTube or Vimeo) and use the ViewBix player to do the following:

    * Engage viewers with interactive features
    * Add apps to existing videos
    * Drive calls to action
    * Add coupons, Skype, and Google Maps
    * Change the font, colors, and logos
    * Share on social media, mobile, and web platforms

One company that uses ViewBix is Paramount Pictures. When promoting the Katy Perry movie they created a ViewBix video that allowed viewers to type in their zip code to find all the theaters selling tickets to that movie. The ViewBix app actually allowed people to buy movie tickets while watching the promotional video.
Why YouTube and ViewBix Make a Great Pair
Founded in 2005, YouTube is a video-sharing website that allows users to upload, share, and browse videos. ViewBix and YouTube make a great pair because as one of the most popular video sharing websites on the internet, YouTube is the perfect platform in which to share videos enhanced with ViewBix tools and features. Here are the statistics that James shared towards the beginning of the episode.

    * 800 million unique visitors visit YouTube each month
    * Over 4 billion videos used every day on YouTube
    * People watch 1 billion views each day on YouTube mobile
    * 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
    * 25% of global YouTube use comes from mobile devices
    * 500 years of YouTube videos are watched every day on Facebook
    * Over 700 YouTube videos are shared on YouTube every single minute

As you can see, despite being less than a decade old, YouTube is very big deal. Used properly, it can be a lucrative tool for the purpose of internet marketing through social media networks. For example, Adam shot a video at a Kristen Chenoweth concert and then shared it through social media via YouTube.
After sharing through Facebook and Twitter, it immediately gained 1,000 views! Then Adam was able to sell CDs and tickets for her concerts, and even point back to her social media sites by using the video.
Tune in now to find out more about how you can use ViewBix to enhance your YouTube videos, or any other videos! These tips are useful for affiliate marketers, product salespeople, or anyone looking for new ways get their videos noticed.

  • Affiliate Buzz #293 – Profit – Venturing Off the Beaten Path
In this episode of Affiliate Buzz, host James Martell, talks with special guest Karen Garcia, founder of GTO management. She has fourteen years’ experience in e-commerce and marketing, and to scrape just the tip of her iceberg of credentials, Karen has consulted on and profitably managed dozens of affiliate programs on many different network platforms.
Join us in this episode they discuss how to find affiliate programs that are not only profitable areas to focus your time and attention, but are also off the beaten path. In addition to sharing insight about what her top affiliates are doing to reach higher conversion rates and earn top commissions, Karen also explains how to organize an affiliate marketing calendar.
Venturing off the Beaten Path as an Affiliate Marketer
Karen explains that there are a plethora of sites on any topic online. She says unless you are targeting niche products for a niche audience, your site is likely going to get lost in the shuffle. Take for instance holidays or special days like Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. There are endless numbers of sites for any of these topics.
Giving concrete examples using real companies that are venturing off the beaten path to the tune of their own affiliate marketing drums, Karen explains what works and what to avoid. One example is a bowling shirt company that focuses the bulk of their marketing in August, around the time when bowling leagues are starting up for the season.

    * Be passionate about what you do / the topic of your marketing program
    * Find something different about it, something no one else is doing
    * Focus on and research that different element and market around it

Karen and James also discuss problems with over saturation in regards to a different topic, such as many websites competing for the same website traffic. Ironically enough, a lot of common topics, such as bowling alleys, get overlooked because they are so commonplace. But sites related to bowling, such as bowling shirts, are few and far between when compared to an over saturated topic, like treadmills.
Another example Karen uses is a company that sells novelty items for office desks. The company has over 3,000 items that are essentially small, manipulative toys used for creative purposes. But one of Karen’s more successful affiliates targets schools, home schooling parents, and moms who work from home because the site also sells a lot of science-related toys, and toys appropriate for prize boxes.
    The Affiliate Marketing Calendar
An affiliate marketing calendar works similar to any other calendar in that it follows the calendar year. However this calendar is targeted to events related to affiliate marketing, whether they are obvious things or “outside the box” events to help you target areas that have less competition for traffic. Here are some of the ways Karen suggests using a calendar:

    * Creating banners for specific holidays or events
    * Looking at holidays that are outside the box
    * Use the calendar to anticipate your audience’s needs
    * Using your program to solve problems for your customers

James brings up a good point about how far in advance affiliate marketers should set up their calendars. While most people might think a month is far enough in advance, Karen actually recommends taking notes as far as a year in advance. For example, she is currently working on her calendar for May 2014 while events from this year are fresh in her mind.
Tune in now to learn how to take your affiliate marketing efforts off the beaten path to tap into audiences that are otherwise overlooked. Learn how to set up your own affiliate marketing calendar. And learn more about the programs Karen has to offer at her site, www.gtomanagement.com.

  • Affiliate Buzz #292 – Is Affiliate Marketing is Dead? No, The Google Affiliate Network Is Dead.
In this episode of Affiliate Buzz host, James Martell, talks with Matt Frary, the founder and CEO of Smarter Chaos, and Carolyn Kmet, the VP of Performance Marketing for All Inclusive Marketing about the surprise closure of the Google Affiliate Network.
Hear thoughts from the professionals about what’s next for internet marketers who relied on the Google program as a way to increase their bottom line. For example, Matt explains that instead of taking a tragic view of the situation to look for opportunity amidst the chaos.
    Is Affiliate Marketing Dead?
This is a good question, and one that James and his guests tackle head-on. As Matt explains, people have tossed the questions around since 2000, any time that something implodes within the affiliate marketing world.
He goes on to share that while a loss like an industry giant like Google does leave a gaping hole, it is a prime example of why affiliate marketers should avoid hitching their advertising to one network. Some other things they discuss include:

    * Some reasons why they think Google may have taken this step
    * Ramifications of waking up and finding yourself out of a job
    * How affiliates are handling the current situation and their options
    * Strategies to put into place so you know the next step to take

Carolyn offers further advice for merchants such as contacting your affiliates directly and letting them know you will have a solution as soon as possible, and providing your direct contact information. Next she suggests coming up with a plan for future marketing, and finally to come up with some sort of incentive for affiliates to take care of your program first.
    The Importance of Innovation
This is a topic on which Matt wrote at length on his blog at Smarter Chaos,  and in today’s Affiliate Buzz episode he goes into some more detail. Some of the exclusive information he shares includes:

    * Why this can be a difficult industry for advertisers to navigate
    * Why so many advertisers and merchants trusted the -Google brand
    * The importance of learning the industry before finding a traffic source

Matt warns that linking up to a single network and settling in there, and using only one network to advertise is a bad idea – and this latest situation with Google is the perfect example of why. He suggests finding software that works for you and using different strategies that you might not get from larger networks.
While Carolyn does agree that marketers need to use the affiliate that works best for them, she adds that merchants need to take charge of their own innovation. Instead of depending on an affiliate to do all the work, merchants should only rely on the affiliate for the information necessary to make their own decisions.
Whether your marketing strategy was hit by Google’s decision or you are just getting started in the industry, tune in now to take advantage of the valuable insight this trio of industry experts has to offer!
