Part 1: Born and raised in Uganda, Josh is living now in Bonn, from where she joins us this week. Her impressive networking skills have shaped this podcast since the beginning, so it is about time for her to get involved! Er ging den umgekehrten Weg wie Josh und ist als gebürtiger Brite  mit Zwischenstation in Deutschland mittlerweile seit vielen Jahren in Uganda wohnhaft. Der studierte Biologe erzählt uns neben seiner interessanten Biografie von den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die Äquatorregion, staatliche Bewaldungsprogramme und die beeindruckende Biodiversität Ugandas. [ENG] Tunisia is a very impactful country. Despite its relatively small size of 163.000 km² it has influenced world history for centuries. From the Carthago Empire as Rome’s largest rival up until the Arab Spring which spread from Tunisia to many other Arab countries. 

Providing us with a first-hand perspective this week is Tunesian student Meryem Masmoudi who grew up in Tunis and recently moved to Germany for her Master studies at the TU Berlin. Additional to all our usual chapters - namely Geography, History, Politics and Economics - Meryem also gives us an insight into Tunesian Art, Music and Architecture.

[DE] Ist der Tschad trotz seiner kleinen Bevölkerungen die neue Regionalmacht in Zentralafrika? Im Mittelpunkt dieser Hypothese steht der mittlerweile seit 30 Jahren amtierende Präsident Idriss Déby, dessen Innen- und Außenpolitik wir näher erörtern wollen. Wirtschaftlich prägt seit 2003 das Erdöl die Staatseinnahmen, trotz beeindruckender Wachstumsraten halten sich die Vorteile für die Zivilbevölkerung hierbei jedoch in Grenzen. Geografisch ist der Tschad namensgebend durch den Tschadsee geprägt sowie die harschen Wüstenlandschaften im Norden (s. Fotos).

[DE] Die einstige deutsche Musterkolonie Togoland und heutige Republik Togo ist ein kleiner Staat an der Westküste Afrikas. Geografisch schlängelt sich das kleine Land als ein schmaler Streifen von der flachen Küstenregion im Süden über das Atakora Gebirge hin zu den Savannenlandschaften im Norden an der Grenze zu Burkina Faso. Politisch wird Togo seit 53 Jahren von Vater und Sohn Gnassingbé regiert. 

Im Fokus steht diese Woche aber ein anderer - unser Interviewgast Thomas Krahl (s. Episodenbild). Der gebürtige Sachse machte sich vor zehn Jahren auf nach Kpalimé in Togo und hat sich dort mittlerweile eine eigene Existenz aufgebaut, sowie an zahlreichen Entwicklungsprojekten mitgewirkt. Er ist dort außerdem als Musiker aktiv in mehreren Emsembles und nennt uns interessante togolesische Künstler. Neben seiner spannenden Biografie gibt er uns der gelernte Koch in diesem einstündigen Togo-Talk auch einen Einblick in die dortigen kulinarischen Genüsse. [DE] Südsudan: Der Binnenstaat in Nordost-Afrika ist seit 2011 vom nördlichen Sudan unabhängig. Komplementär zur Sudanfolge betrachten wir die 50 Jahre Unabhängigkeitskampf welche letztendlich in der Sezession Südsudans gipfelten. In den Jahren seit 2013 entbrannten leider wieder Kämpfe, diesmal jedoch innerhalb des neuen Nationalstaats zwischen den politischen Führern und ehemaligen Kameraden Salva Kiir und Riek Machar. Näheres im Podcast.

Wie im Episodenbild zu sehen, werfen wir ebenfalls einen Blick auf die geografische Lage, mit den großen Sudd-Sumpfgebieten, der Hauptstadt Juba und den riesigen Ölreserven. Zum Abschluß werden dann noch die Einflussnahme und Abhängigkeit zwischen den beiden Sudans und der VR China erörtert.

[DE] Sudan. Das Land der schwarzen Pharaonen. Wir wollen uns diesem mächtigen Staat im Nordosten Afrikas thematisch mit drei Kapiteln widmen:

1) Themen unter anderem: Die diversen Nils, das Königreich Kusch, Nubien sowie der Einfluss von Ägypten und Großbritannien.

2) Wir dröseln den Darfur Konflikt detailliert auf und betrachten, welche historischen und politischen Gegebenheiten zu den barbarischen Kriegshandlungen führten, die die große Region im Westen Sudans seit 2003 heimsuchen. Ebenfalls geben wir Antworten auf die Frage warum die internationale Staatengemeinschaft so lange zugesehen und erst nach fast fünf Jahren - mit dem bis dato größten UN-Blauhelm Kontingent - auf die anhaltenden Menschenrechtsverbrechen in Darfur reagierte.

3) Miriam is back und erzählt uns von ihrer Zeit in Sudan und dem Stadtleben von Khartum. Neben diversen Reisen (s. Episodenbild) schildert sie auch ihre Eindrücke von der sudanesischen Revolution Ende 2018, welche sie hautnah miterlebte. Außerdem gibts noch ein Lifehack wie man trotz eingeführter Scharia in Khartum an Alkohol kommt, stay tuned!

[DE] Wir blicken diese Woche auf das Horn von Afrika, genauer gesagt nach Somalia, welches seit Jahrzehnten mit Afghanistan um den unrühmlichen Titel “Most Failed State on Earth” konkurriert. Seit dem Bürgerkriegsbeginn 1991 und dem Scheitern der UN Mission 1995 gab es hier leider keine gesamtstaatliche Regierung mehr; wir betrachten daher in dieser Afrika für Almans Folge ausgewählte Akteure innerhalb Somalias jeweils mit einzelnen Themenschwerpunkten:

We are talking among many other topics about the Great Zimbabwe Monument, the colonial times of Rhodesia and the controversial legacy of president Robert Mugabe. Part 2: The German side of today's podcast is covered from Cologne by Sima (right image). Despite her demanding job as a nurse during this Corona pandemic she took the time to tell us her story. Although having settled in Germany since 2017, Sima still remains active in her home country with her NGO project Mmogo Trust, which helps to raise school fees for children in need.
