[ENG] Thanks to Political Analyst Shaandre Cavin Finnies, this week’s podcast leaves no controversial topic untouched: From the debate over German genocide compensations to the continuous call for land expropriation as well as the current Fishrot corruption scandal. No surprise that this is the longest Afrika für Almans episode so far. But despite all discussion, the beauty of Namibia remains undisputed! Being it the Namib desert along the Atlantic ocean (Skeleton Beach, see photo), Fish River Canyon or the various national parks, this large, sparsely populated country has so much to offer. So if you are a German that is new to Africa, Namibia is your ideal icebreaker.

[ENG] 2020 is here, and we welcome it with the beautiful country of Mauritius. Located far behind Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, the tropical island is one of the most unknown nations in Africa. To change this we are joined this week by Zubeir Golamaully. After finishing his Bachelor in Biotechnologyat the University of Mauritius, he currently lives in Ankara to do his postgraduate studies. 

The interview covers among other topics the melting pot of ethnicities and languages, the island’s unique political system, as well as the source for Mauritius’ current economic success.

[DE] Mauretanien, der ewige Wüstenstaat. Themen in diese Folge: Die Mauren, die Sahara und die Sklaverei´.

Das große Land liegt in Westafrika zwischen Sahel, Sahara und Atlantik. Kaum ein Land besteht aus derart viel Wüste, weshalb sich die meisten der 4,5 Millionen Einwohner auf die Küste im Westen und das Ufer des Senegals im Süden beschränken. Doch selbst in der unmenschlichsten Wüstenlandschaft finden sich Naturschönheiten wie das Auge von Afrika (s. rechts) oder auch die historisch, heilige Stadt Chinguetti. 

Politisch ist die ehemalige französische Kolonie seit ihrer Unabhängigkeit 1960 durch diverse Militärputsche recht unruhig. Der letzte Coup d'Etat fand 2008 statt. Auch die Konflikte im benachbarten Mali (s. AfA #30) verheißen für Mauretanien nichts Gutes. Außerdem ist Mauretanien das vermutlich letzte Land der Welt in dem die Sklaverei heute noch grassiert. Wie es dazu kam, und weshalb der Westen nur bedingt hiergegen interveniert, erfahrt ihr in der heutigen Episode.

[ENG] Morocco is located in North Africa just across the strait of Gibraltar. Aside from France and Spain, it is the only country with access to both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. With its rich culture and history, Morrocco is home to various historical towns that rightfully rank as some of the top travel destinations in Africa. 

To get a better understanding, we are joined this week from London by my fellow debating friend Yasmine Chandid. She takes us through the times of ancient Morrocco, the European influence and post-independence developments, explains why the Arab Spring did not lead to regime change and describes the Amazigh impact in modern-day Morrocco.

Hier nun das angekündigte Expertengespräch: Zu Gast ist die Politikwissenschaftlerin Sonja Nietz von der Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg, welche sich intensiv mit den Gründen des stockenden Friedensprozesses in Mali auseinandergesetzt hat. Themen sind unter anderem der historische Konflikt zwischen Nord- und Ost Mali, die Folgen des Sturzes von Muammar al-Gaddafi und das paradoxe Phänomen, dass sich trotz (oder gerade wegen?) der stetig steigenden Militärpräsenz im westafrikanischen Staat dessen Sicherheitslage rapide verschlechtert hat. Sehr zu empfehlen ist auch Frau Nietz' Buch zum Friedensprozess in Mali, sowie ihre Beiträge zur Publikation Sicherheits- und Friedensordnungen in Afrika

[DE] Mali liegt im Herzen Westafrikas, geografisch und historisch. Diese Folge dient als kompaktes Intro zu Mali - ebenfalls primär geografisch und historisch. 

Zwischen dem Nigerfluss und der Sahara erstreckt sich die Republik Mali zu großen Teilen in der Sahelzone (s. links) und lässt sich unterteilen in den Nordosten und Südwesten. Geprägt durch die Hochkultur der Mali-, Songhai und Bambara Reiche (s. Timbuktu Mansa Musa Mosque rechts), war das stolze Land lange Zeit der Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Transsaharahandels zwischen Asien, Europa und Afrika. 

Mit Blick auf die Gegenwart dominiert Mali jedoch in den letzten Jahren aufgrund interner Unruhen die Schlagzeilen. Der Nordosten (Azawad) beheimatet Tuareg-Rebellen und weitere terroristische Organisationen wie AQIM oder MUJANO, die sich von der Regierung in der Hauptstadt Bamako abspalten wollen. Und nun kommt Deutschland nach Mali...

(DE) Malawi - das lange Land im Grabenbruch.

   

Der kleine Staat im Süd-Östlichen Afrika ist den meisten höchstens durch die Herkunft von Madonnas Adoptivkindern bekannt. Allerhöchste Zeit dies zu ändern!

Geprägt wird Malawi in erster Linie durch den gleichnamigen See (s. links), welcher ein Viertel des gesamten Staatsgebiet einnimmt und weltweit die höchste Artenvielfalt zu bieten hat. Hierzu auch eine kleine Anekdote des Hosts.

Außerdem finden sich in Malawi alle Tiere der Big Five (s. rechts), sowie ein in Anbetracht der schlechten wirtschaftlichen Lage grundsolides Transportnetz.

Allen geophysisch veranlagten Hörern wird diese Woche ein Herz aufgehen, da wir länger auf das Great Rift Valley (deutsch: Großer Afrikanischer Grabenbruch) eingehen wollen, welches sich über die gesamte Staatsfläche Malawis hinweg von Äthiopien bis nach Mosambik erstreckt. [DE] Madagaskar - der rote Kontinent im indischen Ozean. Der riesige Inselstaat ist hinlänglich bekannt, ob aus Animations- oder Dokumentarfilmen. Madagaskar spaltete sich vor 160 Millionen Jahren vom afrikanischen Festland ab und gilt als heimlicher achter Kontinent. Berühmt als Heimat der Lemuren findet sich die einzigartige Flora und Fauna Madagaskars auch auf dem Episodenbild: Links, die riesigen Affenbrotbäume der „Baobab-Allee“ und rechts, der Steinwald im Nationalpark “Tsingy de Bemaraha”. 

Ein weiteres Alleinstellungsmerkmal sind die Ethnie und Sprache der Madagassen, so gehören sie als die einzigen auf dem gesamten Kontinent der Austronesischen Sprachfamilie an (hierzu ein kleines Linguistik Special). Auch politisch und wirtschaftlich war und ist viel los in Madagaskar, vor allem in den letzten zehn Jahren. Eine gewichtige Rolle spielt hierbei das “Landgrabbing”, ein Phänomen was insbesondere Afrika zunehmend heimsucht. Mehr dazu, und den aktuellen Problemen dieser faszinierenden Insel zum Ende der Folge.
