In the 1970s, Bashir Kouchacji survived being kidnapped and tortured in Beirut after his captors accused him of being a CIA agent. Years later, after rebuilding his life in America, the phone began to ring. At first there was only silence, then laughter, then a childlike voice that seemed to know where he was, who he knew, and how afraid he had become.
