In 1816, snow fell in June, crops failed across Europe and North America, and thousands feared the end of the world. Known as the Year Without a Summer, this extraordinary period was caused by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Tambora a year earlier, although nobody at the time knew the true reason. As famine spread and old superstitions resurfaced, a group of writers trapped by the relentless storms at Lake Geneva created Frankenstein and The Vampyre, changing horror literature forever.

Instead, she was found dead in the water, and her private letters became the centre of a sensational murder trial. After George Reeves, television’s original Superman, died in his Benedict Canyon home in 1959, the official ruling was suicide. But questions, rumours and old Hollywood whispers followed the case for decades, and later tenants claimed the house itself was haunted by strange noises, moving objects and even an apparition of Reeves dressed as Superman.

A church in Texas where thousands looked into the sky in 1988. A theory that time moves towards rupture. A machine beneath Europe that became, for some, a symbol of a universe disturbed. And ordinary people, scattered across the internet, trying to explain why their lives feel as though they continued after something else ended.

Perhaps nothing happened. Perhaps the feeling is memory, grief, fear, nostalgia, or the strange dislocation of living through years that change too quickly.

But for those who believe they remember the other world, the question remains. If reality did shift, would we know? Or would we simply wake the next morning, make a cup of tea, answer our messages, go to work, and spend the rest of our lives wondering why home no longer feels like home?

In 1986, blood began to rise from the floor of a family photography shop in La Plata, Argentina, drawing police, priests, believers and frightened neighbours to a house suddenly treated as both crime scene and shrine. Less than a year later, in Atlanta, Georgia, another ordinary home became known as the Blood House when human blood appeared across its floors and walls, with no body, no injury, no break-in, and no explanation.

Before the 1890 Morfa Colliery disaster, miners claimed they heard strange sounds in the four-foot seam, including doors opening and slamming in the darkness, and some believed the pit was warning them of fire or explosion. When the mine later exploded and dozens of men and boys were killed, those ghost stories entered the inquiry itself, turning Morfa into one of Wales’s most unsettling haunted mining legends.
