  • EMB #258: Running with John Stanton
    A three-kilometre fun run with his sons in 1981 was the catalyst for the then-out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton to realize he had to change his lifestyle. A food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, he began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see "this chubby little guy" who could only run from lamp post to lamp post before having to take a walk break.

    John went on to run over 60 marathons, hundreds of road races and numerous triathlons, including the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition. His pre-dawn runs would ultimately become John Stanton's 10:1 run/walk combination that has helped close to a million people do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling.

    John is regularly featured on CBC, CTV and Global Television, in the National Post and the Globe and Mail, as well as, numerous radio and television programs across Canada and the United States.

    More details on John here.

  • How to avoid temptation at work
    Most of us know what it's like to work in an environment where unhealthy treats are a regular in the staff room. There is sugar for coffee, donuts, candies on the desk, it seems like a never ending list. Then we have  coworkers that want us to join them for a lunch that isn't always healthy, and other temptations in the office.

    On top of that we're stressed out, have little time for anything, sit most of the day and don't have a healthy influence that means so much in an environment like this.

    In this post I go into details and offer 5 tips that will help you avoid temptation at work.

    Top 5 Tips

    * tell your co-workers
    * have a good breakfast
    * bring a health lunch
    * bring food to snack on
    * get active at lunch time
    * try to start a challenge

  • EMB #257: Benefits of Yoga
    I have been loving teaching yoga in Vegreville for about 6 years. I find the reason that I love to do yoga myself is that I always feel better for it! And it is for this reason that I love to teach yoga - because it is so gratifying to be able to help other people feel better too! Prior to my certification, I worked for fifteen years in the school system as an Educational Assistant, so it was an easy transition to teaching in the studio.

    I came to the practice myself for the physical benefits, as I think many in our Western culture do. But I quickly found that many of the practices, though simple, were very profound. The act of simply becoming aware of your breath and your body, and how you're feeling physically, mentally, emotionally, can have such a huge impact on stress and anxiety levels. Yoga translates as yoke or union, and by simply reconnecting our physical, spiritual and mental aspects, we can come to find more balance in our lives.

    I am married to Cam, and we are happy parents to six grown children and two grandchildren. We live and work on a farm south of Vegreville, as well as work together in another business. Aside from my love of yoga, I enjoy time with our family, the outdoors, hiking, snowboarding, and water sports.

  • Importance of a Team
    In this show I wanted to talk about the importance of a team. It's seems like more than ever I'm starting to realize how important a team is not only in business but in life. Think about your work place, there's a good chance you work with a team. You have a boss or manager, you have coworker and other employees all doing different things but working together for one purpose.

    This is no different than a family. Each one of our family members contribute in some way. Course sports is no different. Everyone has one goal, everyone has a job or an objective and without that part done, we miss a big part of what we're trying to accomplish.

    When it comes to health, fitness and optimal health it's just as important to have a team. We need likeminded individuals, a supportive group community, a leader in giving direction and so on.

    Think about how challenging it is to do everything, to make up your workout routines, to meal plan and  to feel supported. Having a team back you up and give you that needed support will make all the difference in your success to reaching your health and wellness goals.

    More details are here if you're looking to be a part of a supportive team:
