  • Stress of Halloween Candy
    Today I wanted to talk about the stress of halloween candy because with halloween right around the corner this is a stressful time for many. We may be trying to live a healthier lifestyle but halloween candy is all over the place.

    It's at work, at grocery stores (X 10), it advertised on tv, its in the lunch room, customers are brining it in. Then of course there's the kids which makes it extra difficult if we're trying to teach our kids how to eat healthy as well.

    So what is one to do at this time of year with the stress of Halloween candy on many of our minds, how do we avoid it, how do we teach our children differently and how do we not gain an extra albs at this time of year?

    In this show I go over tips and suggestions on how you can stay healthy at this time of year, set an example for your children and avoid the usual holiday weight that comes along with all the extra candy.

    Show notes:
    Office suggestions

    * Bring in healthier snacks to the office
    * let people know this is a healthy zone
    * talk about it, don’t hide it
    * management needs to know

    SET STANDARDS FOR YOUR CHILDREN

    * Let them know ahead of time
    * give them more credit
    * don’t surprise them so it feels like you’re taking away from them
    * make a trade - trade their unhealthy candy for something better quality
    * buy their bag of candy

    Have healthier snacks around the house:

    * Fruit to go snack
    * bananas with shredded coconut and chocolate chips
    * decorate oranges as pumpkins
    * baked pumpkin seeds

    FOCUS on QUALITY

    Discuss this with the kids, 'you reap what you sew'

    It applies to many aspects of life I find.

    Good thoughts will bring good feelings.

    Good food will bring good health.

    Good friendships will bring good times.

     Good actions will bring a good life.

    In the long run, that is.

    As Thoreau would say "goodness is the only investment that never fails".

  • EMB #213: Self Love with Janis E McKinstry
    It was an absolute pleasure to talk about self love with Janis McKinstry on this episode of Exploring Mind and Body.  Janis begins by talking about how she was diagnosed with more than a couple auto immune dis-eases and how she wasn't getting the care or answers she was looking for. So she decided to take her health in her own hands and heal herself.

    Janis now teaches others with audio immune dis-ease how they can take control of their health as well and work towards living a healthy lifestyle.

    Show Notes:

    * diagnosed with Hashimoto dis-ease
    * wasn't happy with conventional medicine results
    * decided to cut out synthetic and toxic substances in her life which include people, chemicals, certain processed food and more
    *  also cut out soy, diary, corn and gluten among other things
    * 'love yourself before someone else loves you'
    * look into the mirror and practice saying 'no', help yourself understand it's okay to say no
    * if you say yes to someone regarding something you don't want to do you're saying no to yourself
    * declutter your life
    * clean up your work space, home place...
    * read ingredients (on everything from fabric softener to dish soap)
    * move stagnant energy from your home
    * create a ritual
    * smile - spread the joy
    * learn how to say no and when to say yes
    * understand your personal boundaries

    If you want to follow along with Janice and learn more about her and what information she puts out there, you can find her at her Facebook page called The Healing Soulution.

  • Importance of a Success Journal
    It's hard to put into words the importance of a success journal and how much it can actually change your life. Now I'm not talking about a regular nutrition journal, or even recording your food electronically. I'm talking about a separate success journal that is more of a personal journal of your health. In this post I put together all of my most significant tips to help you create your own success journal that will without a doubt change your life.
    #1. Use a separate book
    Don't use your work schedule, don't use a tiny note pad that you can hardly write in. Get yourself a separate book that you'll be proud to carry with you.
    #2. Carry with you at all times
    This success journal is to be with you everywhere you go. Your success rate actually lowers if you try to remember everything that you consumed and record at the end of the day. Carry this book with you knowing whatever you eat in that moment will be immediately recorded.

    #3. Take Progress Pictures
    98% of people that don't take progress pictures at the beginning of their health journey tell me they wish they had. We're all looking for progress is some way, there's a big difference between knowing you're losing weight and getting in better shape, seeing on on a tape measure and even a scale, than it is seeing your body transform with your own eyes through pictures. TAKE PROGRESS PICTURES or you'll wish you had.
    #4. Use a Measuring Tape (not a scale)
    I often talk about how the scale is the least accurate measure of success. You'll do yourself a whole lot of good if you take your measurements each week, record them in your success journal and stay away from that scale.
    #5. Record everything you consume
    Everything you eat, everything you drink, especially your cheat meals and treats should be recorded. It's important you write down even if you don't want to write down. You need to see what you're consuming each day so you can start to see a pattern in your eating habits.
    #6. Watch for a pattern
    As humans we are creatures of habit, we crate patters every single day. This is no different with food. The food patters we create often show us the cause of mood swings, cravings, emotions and more including digestive issues, nasal congestion and more. This is why it's so important to record everything. I mentioned in this show, 'How I healed Myself', that I was able to see what foods my body didn't agree with by recording in my own success journal.
    #7. Write down inspiring quotes at the top of each page
    What we're doing throughout this success journal is slowly changing your mind set. It's important to continually write down and see positivity each day. This could be from a tip, a quote and words from someone you aspire to. Whatever it is that day, write it down at the top of the page because each time you open that success journal you'll be able to see it and reinforce that positivity in your life.

    #8. Record your fitness routines as well
    This success journal will have in it everything that has to do with your health, everything that contributes to the success of your health. Fitness is a key component. Now some times we miss workouts and don't think about them, some times we think we workout more than we actually do and we may even be missing a well deserved off day to let our bodies heal and recover. Make sure you're writing down your workouts so you can refer back to them and have a better understand of what workouts you've done and how often.
    #9. What you did great and what you can work on

  • Stroke Survivor Louise Landry
    I had the pleasure of interviewing Louise Landry on this episode of Exploring Mind and Body who as you'll soon find out is not only a stroke survivor but a stroke thriver.  Louise has been a member our of group detoxes, challenge and now monthly membership for quite some time and is nothing less than an inspiration.

    With her participation, encouraging comments and updates on her own workouts, others are sure to push themselves just a bit more knowing there are others like Louise working with them.

    Louise facilitates her own peer support groups for other stroke survivors in which she talks about during our interview. More on the interview in the show notes.....
    Show Notes:

    * what is a stroke
    * how Louise was affected
    * what limitations she deals with and get through each day
    * living as a stroke survivor
    * not believing in the 'victim role'
    * pushing past limits
    * setting goals
    * encouraging other stroke survivors

    It's been an absolute pleasure getting to know Louise and having her apart of our groups, in fact I'm not sure if I can think of anyone more supportive with all that we do as a True Form Life Community.  I feel so grateful I have the opportunity to share Louise's story with you, and hopefully offer some inspiration and knowledge around being a stroke survivor and how to better understand each of our circumstances.

    We all have different paths in this life, we all have a choice as to what mind set we choose and what direction we take in our lives. I'm so happy Louise has such a positive mind set, inspiring others in our group, even myself at times and with her peer visits for other stroke survivors as well.
