  • How I Healed Myself
Now I'm not sure I've openly talked about this before, not that it's a big secret. I suppose I've never had any reason to in the past.  I guess there's the other factor of when I was starting out doing this health thing full time 4 years ago (at the time this post will be published), I thought I had to have perfect health to be credible. I thought, I had to lead by example in every way possible, not that I still don't, but the thought of sharing my health issues seemed almost too personal?

Things have changed as we move forward in life and feel more comfortable with who we are and where we are in whatever situation we're in. This is a story about myself, some health issues I've dealt with and how I got over them.

At least a few years ago now, I was dealing with stomach issues on a regular basis. Almost monthly I would find myself in the bathroom, curled up on the floor with excruciating abdomen pain. This happened consistently for about 6 months. At first it seemed to come out of no where, then as it began to happen on a regular basis I knew I had to do something about it.

Numerous doctors visits turned up nothing, blood work and testing, nothing. The pain and 'episodes' continued until I chose to take action.

I started to record in a 'success journal', from everything I ate to the emotions I was feeling after a meal. As I slowly did research around 'controversial' foods, I began to take them out of my diet. I took out Gluten too see how it would make me feel. Then I took our dairy products; I researched gmo's and decided to do everything I could to avoid those as well.  No soy products either.

Slowly but surely I started to get better, the episodes began to disappear and this is how I found my true health. Thinking back, my book Detoxify Yourself was written not in part but because of my own health issues. Complete Truth Protein is no different, I personally took toxic protein thinking it will help me build muscle but I had little consideration for the rest of my health.

Finally Exploring Mind and Body was created and now I share not only my story buy others' stories as well of how they healed themselves like Tosca Reno's sugar addiction and Julie Daniluk's inflammation story. You can listen to my full story here.

  • EMB #209: That One Big Break
Early in my athletic career I was hoping for one big break, maybe throughout my career I was hoping just one person saw me in the right situation. This is no different with business, with one product or one idea. I suppose not until recently I realized there's no such thing, one big break is a myth. It takes time, effort, dedication and sacrifices to get what you're after no matter if it's a fitness program, business or other areas of your life.
Here are my top 5 Tips
...to help you get past waiting for that one big break
#1. Find a Mentor or Coach
Without a doubt this is the most significant tip in getting past waiting for that one big break. Think about how much of an advantage you'd have if you found someone you can trust that has been through what you want to accomplish.

Think about someone you aspire to and how valuable their sharing information or advice would be to and how quickly they could help you progress. This doesn't always have to be a paid coach, you could find someone in your family, a trusted friend or someone else you find that has the experience to help you out.
#2. Figure out what you really want
It's pretty difficult to go after your dreams and goals if you don't know what they are. Sounds funny but the truth is we often think we want something and don't know why. We often talk about doing something but don't take any action towards it. We wander around aimlessly no overstating down and really digging deep to learn how to go about finding what we really want.  Which is a perfect segway to to the next tip.
#3. Design a plan for success
We all need a plan for success, it doesn't matter if it's a business plan or a weekly plan for nutrition and fitness. Designing a plan will help you know exactly what you're eating for the week, know exactly what you're doing on what day for exercise and give you confidence knowing exactly what you'll be doing throughout the week.
    #4. Stay Focused
It's important to stay focused as move forward towards your goals and avoid waiting for the one big break.  I highly suggest writing your goals down, talking about them, letting your friends know what you're doing and what you're trying to accomplish. I know this is scary but I also believe it's incredibly significant in the big picture.

You can put sticky notes around your house or office, you can write on the mirror in you bathroom, give yourself reminders in your journal (written or electronic). There are so many distractions out there, so may ways to fall off track, which is why it's so important to find different ways to stay focused all the time.
#5. Be willing to adjust on the fly
Things come up, life happens. Our goals change over time as does our mind set, there's nothing wrong with that, in fact it's normal. To be successful in following your dreams you need to have an open mind, be willing to adjust on the fly and if nothing else, be resourceful and make it happen.

Having the same mind set, not considering a different way or a different idea will only slow your progress if not stop it completely.

  • What story are you telling yourself?
Have you ever thought about what story you are telling yourself? Have you ever noticed the thoughts that are continually going through your head?  See what happens is, when we're younger we're told a story, this story rarely comes from us. This story is usually from a trusted and or authoritative figure, it could be a parent, a teacher, coach, family member, etc.  It may have even been something you've heard not exactly told about yourself.

We could start with 'money doesn't grow on trees', 'money is the root of all evil'.  Maybe at one point in your life you mismanaged money so you think and now believe 'I'm not very good at managing money'. This same goes for relationships, we may have been told we aren't 'meant for relationships', maybe you had your heart broken at an early age.  These are stories we've continually told ourselves for years, over and over again until that becomes our reality.

How about 'you're a trouble maker', how many times do you think a child would have to hear this before they believe and make is so. So here we have a child that was told a story at a young age that was continually repeated in his/her heard and throughout childhood they struggle 'being good' when all the while everything inside them tells the opposite.

This exact opposite method works for positive as well. Think about at a young age if a child may peak just a little bit early, so they're stronger and faster than the other children. The other children start to talk about how good an athlete this particular child is, the gym teaching might favourite her a little, then a parent puts their child onto a soccer team and the continual stream of positive reinforcement pushes this child into being a 'good athlete' most of their life (at least at young age).

More than anything this story of being a 'good athlete' was repeated over and over again in their own head making it so.

The struggle with this whole story ordeal is, most of the time these stories that are repeated are negative and are the reason we struggle with certain things in our life. The good news is we can change our story, if we believe, if we put in time and effort and continually find a new story to tell ourselves we can change our mental state of mind and physical as well.

  • EMB #208: Real People Real Results
It was an absolute pleasure having Chantal Denis on Exploring Mind and Body today to talk about her results from our 10 day fitness challenge. I believe there is path that can be followed and repeated not only for Chantal but for you as well, which is why I wanted to share her success with you.

Chantal will talk about being a career woman, a mother of 2 and still finding the time to workout on a regular basis. Below you'll see a picture of her very impressive results. I would like to note that Chantal jumped into the program with two feet, completing each workout and following the program as it was meant.

In the show you'll also hear her talk about how she ran on the side, did yoga daily and also made better nutrition choices. This is an important factor when seeing results like hers and also when jumping into any type of challenge.
