  • Getting out of a fitness rut
    Today I asked Dylan Dean to come on the show for an interview to talk about getting out of a fitness rut. As Dylan explains she was stuck in a fitness rut, wasn't happy with her body, and wasn't able to find the direction or motivation to start exercising again.  This is when she heard about our 10 Day fitness challenge.

    Dylan explains how she simply made a conscious decision, she put her mind to it and that's exactly what she did. It didn't take her long to jump in with two feet and make the most out of this challenge. Dylan's one of the group members that absolutely lights up the group with comments, questions, encouragement and even shared post workout pictures.

    It was an absolute pleasure having Dylan in the group with us, and it's a pleasure to have her on the show for an interview as well. Dylan agreed to this interview pretty much the same day I asked. She took her 'get er done' attitude from the fitness challenge and brought it right to this interview.

    You'll soon find out how Dylan was able to make the time to workout as a busy mom, see results, make better nutrition choices and not only inspire the group but those around her as well.

    I belive there is a path to success, one that can be repeated for continual success. Now I also believe everyone is different and we all need to find the ways we can be successful not only in health and fitness but in life as well; but I wanted to share this show with you to show you that it is possible to see results and as you'll find out getting out of a fitness rut is something you can absolutely do too.

    I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Scott Johnson who as you'll soon find out has a background full of experience through many different ways of exercise, health and fitness. Jason tells a great story of how his father would wake him up at 10 years old and take him running down the country roads. His mother would also take him to health conferences and teach him more ways to live a healthy lifestyle.

  • EMB #206: Time Management with Andy McDermott
    It was an absolute pleasure having Andy McDermitt on Exploring Mind and Body for an interview. You’ll quickly find out how genuine Andy is and how much worldly experience he has to share with us.

    I’m not sure we’ve had such a traveled guest on Exploring Mind and Body after 4 years. From an actor to model, coach, father and husband Andy seems to have done it all. What’s most interesting (at least to me) is no matter what Andy has done or where he’s been he’s always had health and fitness on his mind.

    It’s pretty cool how similar our philosophy’s are when it comes to fitness and overall health. In this interview Andy talks about his workout routine, how he’s able to find time to eat well and exercise consistently with so much on his plate. Before we jump into the show notes here’s more about Andy:
    Who is Andy McDermott?
    After graduating from Northwestern University, Andy avoided getting a real job for 7 years by playing soccer professionally. He taught martial arts and earned a Third Degree Black Belt. Then he served as a cop on the Tactical Response Unit for the Phoenix Police Department for 7 more years. He won the Gold Medal in the Toughest Competitor Alive event at the U.S. Police and Fire Championships. Andy is now in Hollywood working as an actor, model, host, and fitness personality.

    Show Notes:

    * Pro soccer for 7 years
    * 3rd degree black belt in martial arts
    * Police officer for 8 years in Arizona
    * Acting career inspired by some time with Will Ferrell
    * Living in Santa Monica for 3 years following an acting career
    * Husband and Father of 2 boys and 2 girls
    * Children are homeschooled
    * Writes a monthly article for Muscle and Fitness Magazine
    * Why choose body weight exercises
    * 20-30 min workouts
    * 3 favorite exercises: pullups, muscle ups and burpees
    * And ‘always be ready mantra’
    * Choose organic whole food
    * Nutrition wise, stay away from: fast food and refined sugar
    * How to stay grounded
    * Learning from failure

    It was pretty cool having Andy on the show and listening to his philosophy on not only the show notes listed above but his philosophy of life in general. Andy talks about trying new things, experiencing new experiences and living life to the fullest. Certainly inspiring to me and I hope not only the information he shared was inspired to you but his outlook on life as well.

  • Improving Your Mind Set
    I love the mind set, I really do. I've always believed the body follows the mind. I've also always believed deep down we can have, do and be whatever it is we want in this life. The only limiting factor is our own mind set, our own story and our own beliefs.

    I've brought on Marine, Bob Choat who among other things is a Mind Set Transformational Expert who not only believes what he preaches but lives it as well.  You won't find a more passionate person when it comes to the mind and how it affects your overall wellness than Bob.

    At 65 years old Bob sets and achieves physical goals that people have his age wouldn't even attempt. In this show he'll talk about his own mind set, how he was raised, what he believes now and also how he coaches others to raise their own standards of themselves to achieve more and not only reach but set new goals for themselves.
    Who is Bob Choat?
    Bob is also an accomplished martial artist with a 5th degree black belt in Kenpo and a Sr. Instructor in Jeet Kune Do. He earned his PhD in psychology, ran a marketing and advertising firm and has extensive work in fitness and hypnosis.

    Bob is the co-founder of Optimal Life Seminars and Optimal Life Institute, the author of Mind Your Own Fitness and the forthcoming book, The Fitness Manifesto (with Dr. Lori Shemek). He is also the founder of Mind Hack Academy. His articles on peak performance have been published in various publications and websites.

    Show Notes:

    * how to build a foundation
    * growing up in a military family
    * having an unhealthy father
    * changing your mind set
    * hypnosis
    * living through the eyes of a martial artist
    * reaching new heights at age 64
    * Blue Zone research
    * Bob's American ninja warrior goal

  • Importance of Supporting Local
    I love supporting local, I really do. Everything about supporting local resonates with me. Admittedly so, I'm not a fan of box stores, low quality products, little to none customer service and other aspects of mass production with sole purpose of bringing 'more' to market when more times than not we have enough ('more' than enough).

    In this show I welcome Kimberly Cornish, director of Food, Water, Wellness Foundation, who knows the importance of supporting local and put her own twist on how to build a community around food to support farmers, health, quality of food and more than anything connections in support of each other.
    Who is Kimberly Cornish?
    She completed undergraduate multidisciplinary studies at the University of Victoria in art, political science, environmental studies, international development and anthropology.  Taking a diverse field of studies promoted her to think laterally and to integrate understanding from seemingly unrelated areas.

    Her varied work experience in vocational training at the Namibia Training Authority, teaching in Honduras, post-tsunami clean up work in Thailand and fundraising for Serve Nepal and the Australian Red Cross refined her coordination skills and her ability to find unique approaches to perceived problems.  She studied Permaculture to enrich her knowledge of ecological principles and to find a sustainable solution to the food shortage in the village of Vergenoeg in Namibia and lead her to found Food Water Wellness Foundation.

    Show Notes:

    * Local food dinner and event as fundraiser for building a ecological ag portal.
    * Supporting farmers that are farming ecologically to be able to farm in a way that is profitable, beneficial to the environment and the health of people and animals
    * Create a mechanism for consumers to connect with farmers.
    * Important because greatly impact the nutrition in food
    * Microbiology in soil helps microbiome in the gut
    * higher Brix levels make plant healthier and much more resistant to disease
    * Bacteria highest nitrogen substance
    * Local food better for environment because it has a smaller carbon footprint
    * Also more available nutrients
    * Keeps betterSpecial Event Notes:
    all local food and drink
    Farmers from the area contributing to the meal and then the sous chef from the Bison is cooking it up into a four course meal
