  • EMB #213: Benefits of Pilates
    On this show I had the pleasure of interviewing Colleen Manning on who talks about the Benefits of Pilates. Colleen is a local business owner of Studio Pilates locally in Red Deer.  There are so many benefits to pilates and take aways from this show that Colleen explains throughout.

    It was interesting to hear Colleen's story of having a hole in her heart which needed open heart surgery at age 8. She said, after that she valued her health knowing that our health really is a gift and you stay active simply because you can.
    Show Notes:

    * do the best you can with what you've got
    * smaller group classes
    * more emphasis on the individual
    * looking to improve faulty movement patterns
    * 5 principals of pilates
    * stop talking so much and listen to your clients, they'll tell you what they need
    * what does it mean to be fit to you?

    It's an absolute pleasure to have Colleen on the show to share these health benefits with us.  It's hard to believe after 4 years on air we haven't had a Pilates Professional come on to share more information and all the benefits it has to offer. I suppose we can look at the olds saying 'good things come to those that wait'.

    Colleen's an absolute breath of fresh air in the industry and I'd like to wish her, the studio and her new business ventures all the success in the world! We certainly need more people like her education our society about health.

  • Holiday Nutrition Tips
    In this show I wanted to talk about Holiday Nutrition Tips because Canadian Thanksgiving is coming up very soon, and US Thanksgiving is just around corner. Now I know we have listeners from around the world so it may not be Thanksgiving for you but most of us have some type of celebration during some point of the year, weather that's Christmas a Birthday or another social gathering.

    I opened up the show with an entertaining testimonial from one of my online clients Ray Cavin:

    Drew is a sick freak. He makes me exercise and be more active. For the love of god he wants me to swim! Do you know how many people are attacked by sharks swimming every year? The clean eating thing confuses me too? One minute he's telling me eat fresh veggies and cut out the refined sugars and grains, next he's saying I need to drink spoiled juices with bacteria in them called Kombucha. Drew has also dismantled many of my friendships with some long term friends. True friends like the Panago pizza delivery kid, the A&W bear, and the waitress at the pub on wing night. Could I describe Drew's coaching in one word? Yes.... Insanity.

    Show Notes:

    * Go in to your event with a plan, have a good idea of how your day or weekend will go
    * host whenever possible, this gives you more control over the situation
    * have a meal before you arrive if you aren't hosting so you're not starving when appetizers come around
    * Fill half of your plate with veggies and try to eat at least half of those first
    * the other larger portion of your plate should be meat (or protein), eat that next if possible
    * and then the smallest portion of your plate should be carbs - we usually pile on the mashed potatoes and gravy first and it's the biggest portion of our plate, try to avoid this
    * Plan a meal after dinner so you know you have food to go home to
    * leave early, we all know drinks and desserts are the only thing available late into the evening so if at all possible leave early
    * let go of guilt

  • Conditioned Responses
    In this show I talk about how most of the decisions we make are from habits turned into conditioned responses.  As humans we're creates of habit, which makes it easy to do different things without even thinking about it.

    A conditioned response may be to wake up stressed out knowing you have to go to a job you really don't like. Craving sugary or fatty dessert after dinner is a conditioned response. I usually bring up report cards because I work with a lot of teachers. It's a conditioned response to be stressed out during report card time because everyone else is stressed out.

    It's important to pay attention to these conditioned responses because we can changes our lives in a manner to work with and support these conditioned responses instead of unknowingly perform unhealthy habits without thinking about them.

    So for example, lighting a cigarette after a meal is a conditioned response, nothing more than a formed habit. We didn't always light that cigarette but we trained our body to expect it. Same difference with dessert after dinner. So what if, instead we went out for a walk after dinner and turned that into a habit?  What if we started to do short breathing exercises when we know we're stressed out instead of internalizing our frustrations?

    When we get home from the gym we could make it a habit to put a fresh pair of workout clothes in our gym bag and take that bag directly to the car so we can never say 'I had to miss workout because I forgot my gym clothes'.

    The same goes for having a snack meal so we're not more prone to craving, hitting the drive through or overindulging in that unhealthy treat left in the staffroom. Pack your snack, keep something in the car, keep something in a drawer at the office, wherever it is find a way to keep something to snack on so you always have a prepared meal.

    These are all conditioned responses that we do every day without thinking about them. If we become just a little conscious of the decisions we're making and the action we take we can start to form healthy habits and live that healthy lifestyle we're looking for.

  • EMB #211: Adrenal Fatigue and Stress
    I had an absolute blast during my presentation at Health Street, and always appreciate being welcomed to their events. In this particular presentation the topic was Adrenal Fatigue. This show in part was much of what I covered in which I wanted share with you.

    Unfortunately, we're stressed out as a society. There are so many stressors in our lives and so few actions taken to reduce stress, so our bodies don't have a choice but to be stressed out. So I decided to share my top 4 categories on how to reduce stress.
    Top 4 Categories on how to reduce stress
    Habits
    Few could deny, as humans we are creatures of habit. We sleep on the same side of the bed, park in the same stall at work (even if we have other options), eat breakfast on the same side of the table, even watch tv on the same side of the couch.

    We, in large part live our lives out of habit. This goes for both healthy and unhealthy circumstances. When we crave unhealthy choices in the evening it's mainly because we've conditioned our bodies to expect unhealthy decisions whether that be dessert after a meal or chips and pop when watching a movie.

    If we're wake up stressed out because we have to go to work in the morning, this is a habit. For example we could start to be grateful we have a job which would instantly reduce stress.

    *Let's go with point form from here on out, for a full written post find details here.
    Nutrition

    * Processed food stresses our body out more
    * put quality food in your body so you're more able to deal with stress
    * stay away from stimulants like alcohol, tobacco and lower quality foods especially when stressed out
    * work to create heathy nutrition habits instead of looking for sugar, fatty foods at this time

    Exercise

    * Exercise is the #1 way to reduce stress
    * Exercise is also the #1 activity we avoid when stressed out
    * Find different forms of exercise to reduce stress: cardio, gym, yoga, pilates, breathing exercise, writing, talking, etc.
    * Use your habits or conditioned response along with exercise. When you're stressed out go for a walk instead of pushing all that anger and frustration deep down.

    Environment

    * Environment plays a vital role in our stress levels
    * we could be stressed out at home
    * we could be stressed out at work
    * talk to those that stress you out, stop avoiding the issue
    * apologize at work if need be
    * compromise at home
    * understand that doing nothing and continuing on with living in a stressful environment will only stress you out more
