"he world premiere of his sixth feature, “19B.” It marks the sole film from the host country in the International Competition lineup.
The multi-layered narrative centers on the elderly caretaker of an abandoned Cairo villa known as 19B. The owners have been absent for so long that no one even knows how to contact them, and the building is falling apart. Nevertheless, the caretaker is happy with his jerry-rigged life there, sharing the space with abandoned dogs and cats, and drinking tea with the doorman of a high-rise down the block. But things change when the old man is bullied and threatened by the aggressive ex-con Nasr, the leader of a street gang.
Talking to Variety from Berlin where he is finishing the film’s color-grading, Abdalla reveals that he wrote the film during the lonely days and nights of the pandemic, when fear became his greatest obsession. He says, “The film was inspired by an old guy I used to pass while walking in the Zamalek neighborhood, who was feeding cats and dogs in the street regardless of how broke he was. I started imagining his life and mixed it with my own questions.”
    Ahmad Abdalla
Although the story reveals a lot about contemporary Cairo, one could also see it being remade in another culture. The nameless protagonist is guarding an almost demolished house that no one cares about anymore. He clings to it as it connects him to his own past. The building and the stray animals give his solitude meaning since his loved ones are gone. Abdalla says, “In Cairo, the problem of modernizing the city vs the old city has been a cultural issue for years and years. And the idea of the old man who is unable to simply accept that the world is changing around him, and that this change will reach him eventually is a timeless story.”
While the protagonist holds fast to his old ways, many changes are taking place just outside the villa’s walls. These are symbolized by the youths, led by the ruthless Nasr, who charge motorists for street parking, including in the space outside the villa’s gate, and sell various black-market vices including alcohol and cigarettes. Abdalla says, “Egypt has always been a ground for clashing philosophies, ideologies and lifestyles. I have always been fascinated with the question of co-existence and how we can all live together and share the same resources.”
As the dignified oldster referred to only as “the old guy” or “Haj,” Sayed Ragab is a revelation. Abdalla says, “When I was pursuing my career as a filmmaker, I used to watch a lot of independent theater. This is where I met Sayed Ragab for the first time and I was fascinated by him as an actor ever since.” As time went on, Ragab became an established star and Abdalla finally found the right part for his talent in “19B.” He notes, “I was astonished how smart and sensitive to the topic he was after the first reading.”
Also working for the first time with Abdalla is Ahmed Khaled Saleh who plays the antagonist Nasr. Abdalla says, “His amazing performance added a lot to the story and to his character.”

Launched by former festival president Mohamed Hefzy, the Egyptian producer who stepped down from his post earlier this year, the event has quickly taken a place alongside the Marrakech Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops and the Red Sea Film Festival’s Souk as key meeting points connecting Arab and international filmmakers.
“It’s both challenging but also exciting,” said newly appointed industry head Reem Allam, about taking up her post along with incoming festival director Amir Ramses and new Cairo Film Connection manager Lynda Belkhiria. “We’re not bound by traditional ways of doing things. There’s some freedom in that.”
This year’s event will include a wide-ranging program of masterclasses, conversations, workshops and panel discussions featuring award-winning filmmakers and industry experts from around the world. Running alongside it is the Cairo Film Connection co-production market, which showcases 15 projects from 10 countries across North Africa and the Middle East.
Among the highlights are masterclasses with Hungarian director Béla Tarr, French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz and Japanese director Naomi Kawase, who will lead the international competition jury; and conversations with Egyptian screen star Lebleba, who will receive a Golden Pyramid Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival, and Egyptian filmmaker Kamla Abu Zekry, who will be honored with the Faten Hamama Excellence Award.
Along with those conversations, the festival has expanded its program of workshops for Egyptian filmmakers, offering the local industry practical tools that delve deeper into craft than the public sessions. “We want Industry Days to not just be a place where young filmmakers hear an inspiring talk for two hours, but to actually be a place where they can develop their skills,” Allam said.
The multi-day workshops include an immersive, five-day session with American cinematographer Irvin Liu focused on the art and craft of storytelling and a 10-day workshop led by Tarr. The director will offer one-on-one mentoring to 10 up-and-coming Egyptian filmmakers, who will use the course to develop and shoot a scene under the Hungarian screen legend’s tutelage. “It’s another level of giving developmental opportunities for filmmakers to develop their skills and find a cinematic voice and get inspired by alternative ways of filmmaking,” said Allam.
Another industry session will look at the growing move toward eco-friendly film production through a distinctly regional lens, with several filmmakers appearing in conversation alongside Bassam Alasad, the founder of Jordan’s Greener Screen initiative. The panel will examine how film productions in the Middle East and North Africa can be more environmentally friendly and utilize sustainable practices. Of Greener Screen, Allam noted that it’s “inspiring to see an Arab initiative encouraging Arab producers to be more green.”
Meanwhile Cairo Industry Days will shine a spotlight on the growing Saudi Arabian film industry, which has been bolstered by a

" with “The Curfew,” bookending a chapter of his career in which the prolific filmmaker garnered worldwide acclaim.
But for the Cairo-born Ramses, who was appointed festival director earlier this year, the homecoming is a return to his roots in more ways than one. It was at the long-running festival that Ramses “was introduced to the many worlds of cinema,” and accepting the position of festival chief “was a way to give back and pay my respect to an institution that made me the filmmaker I am today,” the director told Variety.
It’s a transition year for the Cairo Film Festival, which runs from Nov. 13 – 22. Ramses was appointed just weeks after Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy stepped down as festival president, after a four-year tenure in which he helped to revamp the leading Arab event, while incoming industry head Reem Allam will take the reins of the Cairo Industry Days platform.
Ramses served as artistic director of Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival from 2017 to 2021, a period in which he helped land the glitzy Red Sea resort on the world cinema map. “The reason why I was brought to Cairo in the first place is because I came from Gouna, and I managed to get the kind of lineup that we brought to Gouna from the first edition. Managing to start a festival where you have in your competition the Golden Palm from Cannes, winners from Locarno, from Karlovy Vary,” he said.
“That was my first target, to be able to prove that this experience is repeatable. My main concern was recreating my Gouna experience as an artistic director, recreating the ability to make Cairo as important in its film lineup as it is in its industry section.”
Ramses’ feature “The Curfew” premiered at the Cairo Intl. Film Festival in 2020.

It was Hefzy who launched Cairo Industry Days five years ago, quickly building it into one of the leading industry events in the Arab film world. Yet despite its success, Ramses still saw an opportunity this year to give the platform an “upgrade.”
“It has been doing great, it has been taking great steps. But after five years, if you don’t change, you’re getting smaller,” he said. “I wanted to build on the success that happened in years before and take things a step further.”
One notable change has been to the festival’s program of workshops and masterclasses, which this year will focus on greater engagement with the Egyptian film industry. “When you do a masterclass, usually it’s open for the public, media, cinephiles,” said Ramses. “That makes amazing masterclasses, but the fact that they’re open to a general audience makes them a bit generic. You have to be on the level of each and every one of the audience.” This year the festival wanted to take “the next step,” he said, by offering practical tools for Egyptian filmmakers.
To that end, Cairo is hosting a 10-day workshop led by iconic director Béla Tarr in which he will offer one-on-one mentoring to young filmmakers, who will use the course to develop and shoot a scene based on a theme proposed by the Hungarian screen legend. “T

"ar’s event marks the first as festival director for Egyptian filmmaker Amir Ramses, who was appointed earlier this year, as well as industry head Reem Allam.
Ramses was tapped just weeks after Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy stepped down as festival president, after a four-year tenure in which he helped to revamp the long-running event.
Hefzy was particularly instrumental in expanding the fest’s international reach, bolstering ties with counterparts overseas, and launching an industry component that has quickly established itself as one of the leading platforms for filmmakers from the region.
The festival’s 44th edition, which runs until Nov. 22, unspools amid a crowded fall calendar of Arab fests, running parallel to Marrakech (Nov. 11 – 19) and on the eve of Saudi Arabia’s splashy Red Sea Film Festival, which hosts its second edition in Jeddah from Dec. 1 – 10.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival, which for five years had occupied a late-October slot and brought a touch of star power to the Red Sea resort town, was put on pause this year. Its future is uncertain.
Speaking to Variety on the eve of opening night, Ramses — who was the artistic director in El Gouna from 2017-2021 — described a spirit of healthy competition among the region’s festivals, who he sees less as rivals than collaborators working toward a common goal of bolstering Arab cinema.
“We’re talking on a weekly basis about where we are, how we can support each other,” he said. “It’s not about taking the lead. You can’t build the region on one strong festival. We complement each other.”
In his first year in Cairo, Ramses has nevertheless been keen to secure the kind of lineup that helped land El Gouna on the map. Along with the regional premiere of “The Fabelmans,” he’s helped attract a strong slate of titles already making waves on the international festival circuit.
Among the films celebrating regional premieres in Cairo are Carla Simón’s Berlin Golden Bear Winner “Alcarràs”; Alice Diop’s Venice Grand Jury Prize and Lion of the Future award winner “Saint Omer”; Alejandro Loayza Grisi’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “Utama”; Sally El Hosaini’s Toronto opening film “The Swimmers”; and a host of award winners from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, including Lukas Dhont’s Grand Prix winner “Close,” Jerzy Skolimowski’s Jury Prize-winning “EO” and Riley Keough and Gina Gammell Camera d’Or winner “War Pony.”
At the same time, the longest continually running showcase of Arab cinema will look to shine a spotlight on the region’s emerging and established talents. In the international competition, Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla’s “19B,” which celebrates its world premiere, will screen among 14 titles vying for the festival’s Golden Pyramid, including Lebanese director Ali Cherri’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight player “The Dam.”

"e scale of the challenges abroad, and the effort to translate 21 months of intensive engagement into tangible results for US alliances, will put the value of that political capital on the international stage to the test even as votes are still being counted.
Biden is set to confront a series of stark challenges in his sit-down with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, critical allies in an Indo-Pacific region rattled by an increasingly belligerent North Korea. An assertive and confrontational China, long a central animating issue for the Biden administration, also looms large.
Biden will also meet with Kishida and Yoon individually before their trilateral meeting.
Biden’s stop at the Asian nations summit comes as advisers see a clear boost from bucking the historical and political trends in the midterm elections. While Biden’s message won’t shift dramatically, the weight behind it is unmistakably more robust after American voters delivered a message that surpassed the hopes of even the most optimistic White House officials.
The trio of world leaders previously met on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in June, pledging to enhance cooperation — a complicated task for the major US allies that have a historically fraught relationship.
But that cooperation is imperative as recent, stepped-up aggression from North Korea will be top of mind for the trio of leaders Sunday. North Korea has conducted missile launches 32 days this year, according to a CNN count of both ballistic and cruise missiles. By contrast, it conducted only four tests in 2020, and eight in 2021.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan suggested Saturday the meeting will not lead to specific deliverables, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that the leaders will “be able to discuss broader security issues in the Indo-Pacific and also, specifically, the threats posed by North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs.”
The trilateral comes one day ahead of a high-stakes, one-on-one meeting for Biden with China’s leader Xi Jinping, their first in-person encounter since Biden took office. That meeting will take place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali.
Speaking to reporters Sunday morning, Biden said he was entering the meeting with Xi in a position of relative strength.
“I know I’m coming in stronger,” he said, noting he knew Xi well and there was “very little misunderstanding” between the two leaders.
“We just got to figure out what the red lines are and what the most important things are to each of us going into the next few years,” Biden said.
Biden, Yoon, and Fumio will also discuss Monday’s meeting during the trilateral meeting.
“One thing that President Biden certainly wants to do with our closest allies is preview what he intends to do, and also ask the leaders of (South Korea) and Japan, ‘What would you like me to raise? What do you want me to go in with?'” Sullivan said, adding that it “will be a topic but it will not be the main event of the trilateral.”
