AI, Ethics, and Philosophy: Why We Need to Be Asking The Right Questions Before It’s too Late

Listen Later

Welcome to 2025 and the first episode of the year! If you’ve been following along through 2024, you know I’ve intentionally pulled back from regular guest interviews. Instead, I’ve primarily focused on weekly updates and reflections on the latest happenings at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. However, dialogues aren’t completely off the table. However, they’ll only make the cut when they’re with people and on topics I genuinely want to engage with, people I feel bring unique perspectives to the table and aren’t afraid to tackle the big, messy questions we all need to confront with me. When I met Brian Beckcom, I knew he was that kind of person.

Brian’s a trial lawyer with over 25 years of experience, which may seem off-brand. However, he’s far from it. He’s also a computer scientist and deep thinker with a passion for ethics and philosophy. With his unorthodox background and dynamic suite of experiences, I couldn’t resist recording a conversation. Our shared yet distinct experiences give us a unique lens to explore how AI is challenging what it means to be human, forcing us to reevaluate long-ignored ideas around ethics and philosophy, and redefining how we measure value in a world increasingly dominated by technology.

To set expectations, this wasn’t an interview—it was a dynamic conversation where the two of us wrestled with urgent questions about the future. How do we navigate the growing influence of AI without losing what makes us uniquely human? What risks do we take if we fail to revive the importance of ethics in decision-making? And perhaps most importantly, how do we ensure we’re asking the right questions now, before it’s too late?

I walked away from the conversation energized and more thoughtful than ever, and I hope you will too.

Show Notes:

In this inaugural episode of Future-Focused for 2025, Christopher talks with Brian Beckcom, a seasoned trial lawyer with degrees in computer science and philosophy, to explore the deep intersections of technology, law, and human experience. The primary focus of the conversation is around the philosophical and ethical implications of AI, discussing its rapid advancements, the fundamental questions it raises about human consciousness, and its potential to reshape reality as we know it. The conversation also touches on practical applications of AI in law and medicine, the importance of intentional thinking, and the need for diverse perspectives in navigating our AI-driven future. Join Christopher and Brian for a thought-provoking start to the year as they challenge listeners to reclaim their attention and think critically about the world evolving around them.
