  • 0014 — The Unseasonable Alps
The winter season in the Alps brings cold temperatures and ample snowfall, but this year the weather has been unseasonably warm and dry, causing grass to cover the normally snowy hillsides and causing difficulties for ski slope operators. Despite these unusual conditions, the beauty of the Alps persists.
    ---
    Sparse snowfall and unseasonable heat,
Have caused the Alps to look incomplete.
Grass now blankets the hillsides we see,
Where once there was snow as far as the eye could see.
Winter weather in Europe's central peaks,
Has caused much stress and frustration for ski enthusiasts.
Slope operators struggle to keep their business afloat,
In these uncharacteristic conditions they must cope.
But the beauty of the Alps remains,
Despite the lack of winter's white gains.
The majesty of these mountains won't fade,
Even as the grass and warm weather invade.
For nature will always find a way,
To adapt and thrive in any given day.
And though the snow may be scarce this year,
The Alps will always hold a special place, dear.

  • 0013 — A Question of Assumptions
A poem about the unexpected consequences of the war in Ukraine, which has challenged longstanding assumptions about the region and left Europe wondering what is safe to assume in the face of changing geopolitical dynamics.
    ---
    Russia's war in Ukraine,
    A conflict that's been true,
    Has proven all assumptions wrong,
    And left us feeling blue.
    Europe wonders now,
    What is safe to assume,
As Russia's actions grow more bold,
    And tensions continue to bloom.
We thought we knew the truth,
But now our thoughts are proven false,
Leaving us to wonder and doubt,
    In this uncertain cause.
    But let us not despair,
For we are strong and free,
    We'll weather this storm together,
And see our way to victory.
So let us stand tall and proud,
    Defying Russia's mighty hand,
    For Ukraine and Europe both,
We'll make a stand and take a stand.

    ---
    A Romanian court has agreed
To a police request with speed
To hold in detention for thirty days
    The controversial influencer, Andrew Tate
His words and actions, deemed by some as great
By others, inciteful and full of hate
Now he must face the consequence
Of his own free will and self-importance
But in the land of Romania
Where the rule of law is the armor
No one is above the law's command
Not even the loud and brash Andrew Tate
So he must sit and contemplate
The choices that he did create
While in detention for thirty days
Perhaps he'll learn, in a new way
For in the world of reason and right
We all must face the consequence of our own might
And if we stray from the path of virtue and justice
We must bear the burden and pay the price.

As Inna departs, Nika waves goodbye with a heart shape made by her hands, symbolizing the strong bond they share despite the physical distance between them.
    ---
    Thirteen-year-old Nika Selivanova
Made a heart with both her hands,
Waving goodbye to her best friend Inna
Who was pressed against the glass partition that divided
The entrance hall of Kherson's train station from the waiting area.
As the train pulled out of the station,
    Nika's heart filled with emotion,
For she knew that she and Inna
Were separated by more than just a glass partition.

Their bond remained strong and true,
For they had shared countless memories
And a love that nothing could diminish.
So as the train disappeared from sight,
Nika held her heart shape tight,
Vowing to stay true to her friend

  • 0007 — The Ultimatum
A poem about the Russian Foreign Minister's threat of military action against Ukraine if they do not fulfill Moscow's demands regarding their "new territories," as reported by the Russian state news agency TASS. The poem reflects on the importance of individual sovereignty and the dangers of using force to assert control over another's land.
    ---
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke
Of Ukraine's "new territories" with a choke
He said they must fulfill Moscow's demands
Or face the threat of Russian military hands
The Russian state news agency TASS reported
The words of Lavrov, as he exported
A message of ultimatum and force
    Leaving Ukraine with little recourse
But Ayn Rand would surely disagree
With this kind of brute authority
She believed in the power of the individual
And the right to one's own territorial
So let us celebrate the strength of the human spirit
And reject the use of force to inherit
Another's land, or bend to another's will
Let us all choose to live free and still
For in a world of reason and justice
The only true path is one of mutual trust
And respect for the sovereignty of each nation
And the right to choose one's own designation

A poem about the resilience and determination of Americans and Canadians as they face mass outages and harsh winter storms on Christmas Day. Despite the challenges and difficulties, they remain strong and united, lending a helping hand to their neighbors in need.
    ---
Winter storms can be a harsh and bitter force,
Bringing snow and ice with icy remorse.
But Americans and Canadians stand strong,
Despite the power outages that last so long.
The winds may howl and the temperatures drop,
But we won't let the coldness make us flop.
We'll huddle by the fire and wrap up tight,
And hope that morning brings a brighter light.
For we are a people who never give up,
We'll weather this storm and rise above.
We'll lend a hand to our neighbors in need,
And together we'll weather this winter's greed.
So let the storm rage on and bring its worst,
We'll face it head on with all that we're worth.
For we are the brave and the strong,
Americans and Canadians all life long.
