Matt Hartman is a very handsome single 41 year old white cis male. He’s a taurus with blue eyes, brown hair, an amazing mustache and tattoos that some may consider “regrettable.” He enjoys long walks in airport terminals  and even longer gravel rides in NWA. Some of his not so guilty pleasures include too many espresso shots from boujee coffee shops and the pursuit of the perfect croissant. 

All jokes aside, I’m pretty stoked to introduce our next guest, Matt Hartman. 

But actually, Matt Hartman is the owner and brains behind Spoked Events, a Cycling Event Product company. With over 10 years in the bike industry doing everything from running a bike shop in St. Louis, managing a race team, managing NICA events for the Missouri chapter and occasionally riding bikes himself, Matt has seen and done a lot. With all of that experience, Matt brings a wealth of knowledge to the events he produces.

Vanessa Bowen (they/them) is a Diné (Navajo) product designer with a passion for cycling. Their creative focus centers on the juncture of design and social equity. This week’s episode was recorded live in Kansas City, Missouri at BikeWalk KC’s annual fundraiser. Joining Marley on the podcast today are three guests - Michael Kelley of BikeWalkKC, Lauren Allen of Women Led Cycling, and Amber Edmonds of Party Pace Pedalers.

BikeWalkKC’s mission is to redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living. We work to accomplish this through efforts in five key areas: 1) education, 2) policy and advocacy, 3) community planning, 4) data and research, and 5) operating the regional bike share system.

Women-Led Cycling is a collective of women on bikes who are working to create a safe and inclusive space for women, transgender, femme, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ cyclists in Kansas City. They work to break down barriers into cycling through a weekly group ride, thoughtfully designed resources, routes and events, and collaborative advocacy. Women-Led Cycling is for everyone (even dudes, they're just not in charge here).

PartyPacePedalers formed with the explicit intention of lowering barriers to entry for biking. Barriers of speed, of distance, of difficulty all diminished or dismantled. Eli Kosko, in early 2022, wanted a place to bike with friends, not-intense, at not-race-pace, and with no-drops. So they made it! They just started doing it and inviting people to do it with them. Along the way Eli picked up two consistent members Ryan Dahmer and Amber Edmonds, who have carried that sentiment of optionality forward well into 2023 (and hopefully beyond).

All Bodies on Bikes has 11 regional chapters across the United States. Today we’re chatting with our Denver team about their experiences leading an All Bodies on Bikes chapter, their motivations, and some learnings they’ve had during their first year as an official All Bodies on Bikes Chapter.

Noelle (they/them): white, queer, non-binary, fat femme who goes by they/them. Likes bikes, hikes, baking, embroidering swear words, drawing friendly monsters and fat ballerinas, being consistently inconsistent about ALL those hobbies just mentioned, and building community. Pretty consistent about that last one.

Tara (she/her) - Former triathlete, current gravel cyclist, and starting to dabble in mountain biking. Outside of cycling, I'm a dog mom, physical therapist, and enjoy all the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer. 

Beth (they/them/she/her) - white, large, agender person that believes N+1 is the correct amount of bikes. Former collegiate athlete that became a bike commuter, a long distance backpacker, then an adventure cyclist. Loves art, nature, dogs, coffee, and human connection. 

Daniela (she/her) - fat, cis-het, white ADHD-happy Latina. Reconnected with bike riding a couple years ago as a way to spend time with her partner and to dabble in the sport of triathlon.

Claire Pomykala is on the adventure of a lifetime - solo bike touring around the world. After graduating college in 2021, she embarked on a solo, self-supported adventure from Atlanta, GA to Baltimore, MD, at the age of 21. Despite her limited knowledge of bikepacking, her passion for biking and thirst for adventure fueled her journey.

Just a month after her post-graduation trip, she independently traveled to London and began a 4.5-month expedition across England, Wales, Scotland, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Monaco, and Spain during the fall and winter months. Given the inclement weather and budget constraints, she relied heavily on the Warmshowers community for support.

Claire documented her bicycle tours on Instagram, amassing a following of fellow bicycle touring enthusiasts under the handle @livingbybike on IG and TikTok.

Upon her return from Barcelona, having depleted her financial resources, she secured employment with a remote tech company in 2022, maintaining a car-free lifestyle and relying on her bicycle for transportation. She established a home in an apartment and adhered to a routine. During this period, she maximized her weekends by embarking on as many bikepacking trips as possible. She eventually took a 2.5-month unpaid leave to initiate her third and current bike tour.

Grounded Nebraska is a community-centric gravel race and ride just outside of Lincoln, Nebraska that brings us together for a weekend of adult summer camp, but with bikes. The event was born out of the shared conviction to make all within the cycling world feel seen, heard and celebrated with the ethos, "cycling is for everyone". Joining us today is the team behind the magic - Susan, Cait, and Sally.

Cait Dumas-Hein (she/her) is the co-founder of Grounded Nebraska and the Associate Director of Bike Walk Nebraska, an active transportation non-profit. Cait self-labels as a community cultivator and has spent a decade creating spaces for underrepresented demographics in cycling. She loves snuggling with her dogs, binging historical dramas, and dancing when not in the bike world.

Susan Cronin (she/her) is co-founder of Grounded Nebraska and owner of Champion System USA. As a queen of operations, her attention to detail and expertise embodies the Gravel Mom vibe for the Grounded Nebraska community as she celebrates and welcomes all to the start line. Outside of the bike world, Susan sews and renovates her home.

Sally Turner (she/her) joined the Grounded Nebraska team in 2023 as the Queen of Stuff. A cycling event management veteran, Sally co-directs The Truffle Shuffle and is the co-conspirator of Gobble Cross. She is passionate about creating spaces for people to gather and exist as their most authentic selves and believes bicycles are a beautiful tool to facilitate community. Sally enjoys gardening, experimenting with gluten-free baking, and reading in her time off the bike.

Alyssa founded Radical Joy Riding in 2022 as a WTF-focused, accessible biking group in Washington DC, and has organized skill shares, beginner rides, and overnights to inspire marginalized cyclists to do what feels good in their bodies. As an organizer with DC Bike Party and Bikes Not Bombs DC, Alyssa strives to be the human embodiment of a no-drop ride. She believes that bikes can save the world, and whether she’s tinkering with her next bike project, teaching Smart Cycling classes, or leading biking adventures, she’s always chasing that bike-utopia dream. 

A Bay Area native who ended up learning how to wrench and winter bike in Minneapolis, Alyssa now literally only knows how to talk about bikes. She coordinated a free bike repair program during the George Floyd protests in the Twin Cities, and has been car free for three years. Alyssa was also a mechanic at the largest bike distribution and repair camp at Burning Man, and is a contributing writer for Grease Rag Ride & Wrench Zines. Best of all though, she’s a super dorky All Bodies on Bikes fan, and is so excited whenever she crosses paths with the folx at ABOB, from the Swift Campout to (now) this podcast. In her grown-up getting paid time, Alyssa fights for a Bicycle Friendly America and safe streets for all at the League of American Bicyclists.
