This week Kathryn and Kristi are joined by Meredith Root of Tactic Nutrition to share some big news for 2025. Girls Gone Gravel will be teaming up with Life Time and Tactic Nutrition to create the More Women More Miles community. This is our way of “keeping our foot on the gas” to make sure that women’s participation in big gravel events continues to grow. As a coach, Meredith explains how important it is for women to continue to regularly carve out time and attention for themselves, no matter how small or big your goals may be. The More Women More Miles program will help us all do just that, with bi-monthly meet seminars covering a range of topics related to racing long, a community of like-minded women, and pre-race meetups at Unbound in 2025.

This week Kathryn and Kristi are catching up with Life Time Grand Prix athlete Caroline Tory from Aspen, Colorado. Caroline grew up in downtown Toronto but was always drawn to the mountains, and after attending college in Maine she moved to Colorado and dove head first into the outdoor lifestyle spending her time skiing and mountain biking. A collegiate runner, Caroline was no stranger to competition, so as she got more confident on her mountain bike competing in races was a natural progression. Caroline discovered that she was drawn to longer mountain and gravel cycling events, and her success in races gave her the confidence to apply for the Life Time Grand Prix in 2023, and she is taking on the series again in 2024. Off the bike Caroline runs the Literary Arts Program at the Aspen Institute, she gives her insights on balancing a demanding full time job and racing the Grand Prix, and answers the hard hitting questions; like if audiobooks count as reading.

Putting on a gravel event for thousands of people is no small task. Our guest this week Amy Charity knows that all too well. Amy is at the helm of the GRVL series which hosts gravel races in FNLD GRVL in Lahti Finland, RDL GRVL in Adelaide Australia, as well as SBT GRVL in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This year their flagship race, SBT GRVL was met with an enormous new challenge as it faced major resistance from some residents of the small rural community that hosts the event. Amy talks through the challenges of putting on such a large event in a remote, rural community and how she and the GRVL team have had to work with stakeholders to make changes with the event so that it minimizes disruptions for residents of the county. She also discusses why it is so important that we, as gravel cyclists, act as good stewards to the places in which we ride our bikes to ensure that these places are being protected and preserved for all users of the land.

This week we have another special episode for you with two Life Time Grand Prix athletes, who, off the bike, are experts in sports nutrition. Sarah Lange is a registered dietician, and Anna Hicks is a certified nutritionist. The pair discuss how mindset and diet culture can play into our fueling decisions as athletes, and why it is important for us to challenge those thoughts when they come up. They give us some concrete tips on how to build better nutrition practices around our training and racing, so that we can perform our best both on and off the bike, and also help break down some nutrition basics to help build a foundation of fueling for performance and success.

Melisa Rollins was born to race the Leadville 100; although if you had asked her in highschool if this was true, she would have disagreed. Melisa's parents have been racing the Leadville 100 MTB since she was just a year old, so the race runs deep in her blood. She herself has started the race seven times, and crossed the finish line 7 times, including in 2024 where she won the elite women’s race. Melisa also completed the Lead Challenge in 2018, a series of 5 races in Leadville including both the 100 MTB and 100 Run races. A feat that most of us find hard just to wrap our heads around! Focussing on the bike, Melisa signed with Team Twenty24 in 2021 right after racing the Leadville 100 MTB that year, with a dream that she would one day come back and win the race. Supported by her team, Melisa raced in the Life Time Grand Prix in 2022, but stepped away for the 2023 season to focus on gaining race experience on the road circuit with her team. This has paid off for Melisa in dividends as she has returned to the Grand Prix in 2024. Following her win in Leadville this year, Melisa finished 9th at Chequamegon this past weekend and plans on finishing the season strong with two more events remaining in the Grand Prix.

This week Kathryn and Kristi welcome back 2022 Lifetime Grand Prix Champion Haley Smith. Haley recently completed her Masters of Science in Sport Psychology, and in this episode she takes a deep dive into how we can all work towards keeping our mindset positive during races and training rides. As both an academic and an accomplished athlete Haley knows the importance of keeping her mental game strong. She talks through her own mindfulness and mindset habits and tricks for preparing for races and hard training sessions. Haley also explains why a mindfulness practice can be a key tool for athletes, and how we can all integrate that practice into our daily routines.
