Jesus, in the lineage of Ruth and King David, is the ultimate example of staying when it's easier to run away. He could have fled the scene on many occasions throughout his life.  We learn from Jesus that staying and allowing God's plan to unfold in us , through us and around us take a lot of trust. We can follow Jesus' example of trusting in God's plan.

David came from a strong line of faithful people. He learned the importance of staying. His life was a training ground for the calling God was placing on his life - to become the King of Israel. David was trained as a warrior-shepherd. It was his willingness to stay, even when there was a predator, and face the predator head  on. He trusted God's presence with him.

Ruth, daughter in law of Naomi. Naomi was widower and bereaved mother. Ruth was given an out, since her husband died, to go back to her own land, to her own people. Yet instead, Ruth chose to stay. She chose to stay with her mother-in-law in her grieving, in her bitterness, in her heartache, in moving and finding a new life. Ruth's story and her choice to be faithful to her commitment to mother in law teaches us a lot about character, and set up the character of the coming kings.

Through Ruth's son Obed the line to King David and eventually to King Jesus.  Because Ruth chose to stay generations were blessed.

Jonah, was a prophet called by God to draw the hearts of lost men and women back to God. Jonah's reaction to God's request - to run, flee to another city, believing that God would not find him amid his running. Yet we know God finds him - and eventually Jonah makes the choice to say YES to God's calling.

Today we study together part of the life and story of Jonah and uncover how Jonah ran, and how similar our nature is to run when we are called to place that do not fit into our agenda, strategic plan or the vision board we have created for ourselves. Let's read and study together in Jonah 1.

Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet. He was called to prophesy to people who were prone to wander, and to turn their back on God, seeking other Gods. Idol worship was rampant throughout Israel, God's chosen people. In Jeremiah 2, we read of Jeremiah pleading with the people of God to stop running to other God's and turn back to become reunited with the one true God.  

Today we will study our tendency to run found in Jeremiah 2:25-35, and how we can make a choice to live different than how we see the Israelites living.

Moses was a man God choose to reveal himself to and through and help lead the Israelites from slavery into the promised land. When we read of Moses as a young man before God has called him, we read of his propensity to run away from difficult circumstances. To take matters and justice into how own hands.

The advise that Job's wife was giving him was to run away from his faith, to ignore all he had learned about God's faithfulness through the good times. Job calls this thinking "foolishness". How many times do we receive advise or even give advise that is foolishness causing us or those we are advising to run away from God instead of to him?

Fear drives us away. Fear closes us off to love, hope, peace, comfort and joy that God has available. It closes us off from solutions. Today we will address this topic of staying when it's easier to run away because of fear. 

We will walk through a portion of Elijah's story and see how fear played into his reaction to Jezebel's threat to take his life and therefore run away and hide. May we learn today from this story what it looks like to stay, and allow God be our strength - letting go of fear so we can see the solutions he has available for us, after all he promises He has gone ahead of us. We are face today is no surprise to him.
