God's name is power. God's name is love. God's name is peace. His name, his very name requires our reverence. Yet, we treat His name as an ordinary word.  The misuse of the Lord's name should sound like an assault to the ears of those who follow after God. God's name, his very name is power and deserves every ounce of respect, reverence and praise we can utter.

The second of the 10 commandments is "you must not make for yourself any kind of image." No idols. Our God is a jealous God. He wants our full attention and affection. Why? Because He knows He is what is best for us.  Relationship and worship of God is the best decision we can make.

In the old testament we are given a list of "commandments", which are actually a covenant between God and his chosen people. The first of the commands is to have no other gods (little g) before God (big G).   Translation, we should not put anything in front of our love and devotion to God. Not work, not other people, not authorities, not a loved one, no one and no thing!

Love your enemies. Bless those who persecute you. These are challenging statements. In order to get to this place of love and blessing, we have to be able to forgive. Forgiveness is the pathway to love and blessing.

Unforgiveness toward brothers and sisters is easy - because we can reach a point in our relationships where we draw a line - we don't forgive - we have been hurt too many times.   But the Bible guides us to forgive no matter what - because it frees us, allows us to receive the forgiveness of Jesus. It isn't about our feelings, it is about our obedience.

Carrying bitterness toward God for pain of the past or present?  God is big enough to handle our questions, and he is big enough to forgive us for all sins. But sin is a part of our lives. God is not responsible for sins existence, but he can use our pain for good. We just have to let him heal us.

Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is self. We can be our own worst enemy! We choose to hold on to mistakes of the past - and allow them to shape our future.   If God can forgive us - we can forgive ourselves!

It's tempting to hold a grudge, to not forgive those who have harmed us. Yet, the more we understand our own need for forgiveness the more we will be willing to extend forgiveness to others.  

1 John 1:9 tells us that our sins are cleansed when we confess them. And we learn in Psalm 103:12 that our sins are then cast as far as the east if from the west.

On today's Cup of Hope we discuss the last of the fruit of the spirit: self -control. Self- control means surrendering to passions and desires that are not aligned to God's best for us.  Self-control requires an awareness that "self" is the only thing we can really control.  If we start focusing on managing self instead of managing the affairs of others, we would be more in line with God's desire for us.

We look to God to be our demonstration of faithfulness. He cannot be unfaithful, because faithfulness is His character. With his spirit living in us, we also have the power to be faithful. May we be surrendered enough to allow the Holy Spirit to work and move in us.
