  • 42. Got Game?
The guys are back in full force this week with what might be their longest episode to date. They even have a plan. The hell you say?? Check out the intro! They explain the plan. Listen to see if they follow it. Plan or not, here’s what actually happens:   The guys kick off the episode by going through a few streaming picks. Pete does his usual and watches something that’s almost irrelevant, but sticks the landing, in West Wing. Next up, Kevin goes over a couple of recent Netflix recommendations, The Stranger and Unbelievable. Both are strong dramatic offerings sure to keep you interested. The guys also throw in a random suggestion for the now cancelled Southland from NBC/TNT   After that little bit of info, the conversation turns to the cinema, where Opie recently saw Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen. It sounds like a return to form for Guy and comes highly recommended. Next up, Alex gives us a last work on Onward before it’s impending release. From here, the guys gently stir the ship to the meat and potatoes of this episode.   The first half of the show ends with a great segue from the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which Alex has seen and didn’t seem to hate, much to everyone’s shock. From there, they use the video game premise to steer into one of the best new shows of 2020, Mythic Quest on AppleTV+   After the break, the guys come back and have a shockingly long and intimate conversation about their favorite video games over the years. There is a noticeable difference in types of players and definitely well worth a listen!! Enjoy!!   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #cbsallaccess #thewestwing #thestranger #unbelievable #southland #thegentlemen #sonicthehedgehog #onward #MythicQuest #videogames #top5games

  • 41. Oscar Birds of the Quarter
After a longer than anticipated hiatus, the guys are back, much like Vanilla Ice, with a brand new invention... No? I thought for sure that joke would land... Anyway, the guys end up recording a shorter, more cohesive show this time around and skip the usual streaming picks.   Our resident cat whisperer, Alex, was unable to find any cats to whisper to, so he switched to birds this week. That’s right, he bit the bullet and watched Birds of Prey so no one else has to. He all but confirms the review from the previous episode and saves the listeners time and money.   As organically as the guys can do it, conversation moves to a new segment, “This Quarter in Cinema”. As with most things, the guys have taken liberty with terms quarter AND cinema. In their estimation, you need to see maybe two movies this quarter. Which one? Listen and find out, you charlatans!!    The guys finish off with what is likely their last Oscar discussion until the late 2020 award season. Enjoy the show!!     #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #cbsallaccess #birdsofprey #alexlovescats #sonicthehedgehog #aquietplace2 #onward #Mulan #oscars #oscars2020 #1917 #joker #parasite

  • 40. Low Energy
After a week away, the guys come back with a plethora of picks. In a move no one (except anyone who understands the APNC level of organization) could have seen coming, the guys have eliminate assigned streaming picks and are now officially streaming at will. God help you all…   Pete kicks things off by discussing the new space comedy, Avenue 5, on HBO. The pilot episode gets differing reviews from Pete and Opie, so you can imagine how that went. Pete also shed some of his self respect and watched Detective Pikachu. This leads to a discussion of the very entertaining YouTube series, Pitch Meetings.   Next up, Kevin changes things up even more by discussing the PS4 video game, Days Gone. He and Alex discuss the game until Opie taps out. Kevin then discusses his left turn into a completely different streaming service, CBS All Access. He takes the time to cover the appetizer, Evil, the new series staring Michael Emerson (of LOST fame), and Mike Colter (star of Netflix’s Luke Cage). Finally, though, he gets to the reason for starting CBS at all, the new series Picard. This spiritual continuation of Star Trek The Next Generation gets Alex and Kevin once again waxing nostalgic and breaks Opie again.   Next up, Opie talks about the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO. He follows that up with yet another YouTube show, The Hollywood Reporters, Comedy Actor Roundtable. This show is a unique take on the talk show with a Q&A directed at some excellent comedic actors.   Alex finishes the streaming portion off with a movie no one should watch, The Layover, on Hulu. The Kate Upton, Alex Dedario project should come with an apology in the description, but its unanimously decided that Alex Dedario is pretty. Is that relevant? Absolutely not…   After the break, the guys dip a little more into the Oscar discussion. In an attempt to start 2020 better than they finished 2019, the guys are talking more about, and watching more, the Oscar nominated films, 1917, Joker, and Judy. Enjoy the discussion as the guys dabble in being classy!   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #cbsallaccess #avenue5 #hughlaurie #detectivepikachu #ryanreynolds #pitchmeetings #ps4 #daysgone #evil #picard #startrek #sirpatrickstewart #curbyourenthusiasm #comedyactorroundtable #thelayover #1917 #joker #judy

  • 39. Someone Has To Watch Cats...Game ON
The guys manage to make it two weeks in a row to kick off the new year. They start with Streaming picks and play a solid round of trivia after the break.   Opie kicks off the streaming picks. He had Hulu this week so of course he watched something on Netflix, That something? Don’t F**k with Cats. Its a very interesting documentary about an absolutely disturbing subject and comes with a very strong recommendation from Opie.   Next up, Pete goes to network TV and watches Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. If you’ve seen the trailer, you can probably picture in your head how the other guys respond to this one… After the absolute drubbing that one takes, Pete goes on to give a review of Dolemite is My Name, which the guys all agree is probably really good.    Kevin follows this up by giving his final thoughts on the Apple TV+ series, For All Mankind. He the moves on to a less stellar review of Hellboy on HBO. After that, though, he breaks back to good by discussing the first two episodes of The Outsider, also on HBO.   Last we go to Alex who has Amazon Prime this week. Sadly, they had no new Joaquin Phoenix offerings so he chose to head over to Apple TV+ and watch Dickinson. While being a bizarre mashup of new and old, it came away with a generally strong review.   After the streaming picks, the guys also take a few minutes to go over the new trailers that dropped this week. We have Jared Leto’s Morbius, A Quiet Place II, New Mutants, Birds of Prey, and some new footage of Black Widow.   After the break, the guys switch into trivia mode. If you have been paying attention to these games, you probably know who lost, though the winner my surprise you. Sadly for the loser, their punishment will be watching the epic musical Cats. Brutal…   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #dontfuckwithcats #documentary #zoeysextraordinaryplaylist #dolemiteismyname #eddiemurphy #forallmankind #hellboy #davidharbour #theoutsider #jasonbateman #benmendelsohn #nojoaquinphoenix #dickinson #haileysteinfeld #movietrailers #trailers #morbius #marvel #spiderverse #jaredleto #michaelkeaton #aquietplace2 #emilyblunt #cillianmurphy #newmutants #maisiewilliams #birdsofprey #margotrobbie #blackwidow #scarletjohansen #cats #catsthemusical #trivia

  • 38.What We Didn't See In 2019
After a week off which came after an episode directed squarely at Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker, the guys are back into the swing of things. The show does kick off with a healthy lambasting of Pete and his interesting take of hosting an episode and then the guys get to their streaming picks.   IN the many weeks leading up to this episode, Kevin managed to watch what seems like everything. On the channel he was actually assigned, he managed to knock out NOS4A2, a take on the book by Joe Hill. Bouncing over to Netflix he took in the newest season (yes the whole thing) of Lost in Space. He also kicked off the first few episodes of the Michael B. Jordan project, Raising Dion. Over on Amazon Prime he also threw down the rest of series of The Widow with Kate Beckinsale. Oh, and just for giggles, he also finished The Morning Show on Apple TV and started another show there, For All Mankind.   Up next is Alex, who watched The Witcher on Netflix. No surprise, Kevin watched THAT entire show also… They discuss the season on the whole and generally agree on their evaluations.   Next up, Opie managed to watch Mrs. Fletcher on HBO. The Kathryn Hahn led series sounds like it has a lot of upside and Opie enjoyed, so that says something…   Lastly, we finish with Pete. He went over to Amazon Prime and said, “to hell with NEW things.” With the same free spirited attitude that he had when running the Skywalker episode, he jumped on an Eddie Murphy classic, The Golden Child.    Before the break, Alex and Kevin also discuss the newest Jumanji movie and valiantly fight off the urge to spoil the ending for the other two.   After the break, the guys jump into the year that was 2019. They discuss the Golden Globes and some of the best and worst movies of the year. Alarmingly, on a show about Pop Culture, the guys discover that they missed many of this years notable films. We blame Pete for this…     #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #themorningshow #theriseofskywalker #starwars #nos4a2 #joehill #zacharyquinto #lostinspace #raisingdion #thewidow #katebeckinsale #forallmankind #thewitcher #henrycavill #mrsfletcher #kathrinehahn #eddiemurphy #thegoldenchild #jumanji #jumanithenextlevel #therock #kevinhart #2019 #goldenglobes

  • 36. We Like To Have Fun Here
The guys get together this week and do a little Pop Culture alchemy, turning very little into a whole lot of nothing!! We have streaming picks, trailers, and a new bad trivia game!   Opie failed to catch much new on traditional streaming, though he caught up on the shows he’s been watching and continues to give rave reviews to The Morning Show on AppleTV+. He also found himself drawn into the rabbit hole that is YouTube.   Kevin tail spins the guys into a Star Wars discussion as he prepares for the release of Rise of Skywalker. After getting through all that he gets to his actual streaming pick, The Grand Tour, on Amazon Prime. It’s a little show about 3 British dudes and their love of all things automobile.   Pete had Hulu but had an insanely busy week and struggled to stay on task. We’re disappointed, too. We’re docking his pay as punishment. That’s ok, though as he was already and avid participant in the Star Wars discussion.   Lastly, Alex got the guys talking about the Silicon Valley finale (say that 10 times fast) and it was a lively discussion about the series as a whole. He also gave everyone a quick warm up on what to expect from Netflix’s The Witcher, which releases this week.   The guys round out the first half by talking about two new trailers, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Call of the Wild. If you’ve seen these trailers and listened to this show, you can imagine how these are received...   After the break, the guys roll into a trivia game Opie found in a sad corner of Target. It’s a pretty straight forward game, but the guys manage to make it seem fairly difficult. With this week in the books, the guys begin to prep for the upcoming nerd fest that is next weeks Star Wars episode.     #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #themorningshow #theriseofskywalker #starwars #thegrandtour #siliconvalley #thewitcher #topgun #topgunmaverick #thecallofthewild #trivia

  • 35. Streaming Picks and Trailer Clicks
This week, the guys get back together and square up their sites on the recent rash of movie trailers that hit the airwaves. But first? That’s right, kids, streaming picks!!   Pete kicks it off by, per the norm, watching nothing current or relevant on HBO. To his credit, though, he did watch a semi-classic film, Big Trouble in Little China. The guys take a few minutes to talk 80’s movie nostalgia before moving it along.   Over on Netflix, Alex loses his heart and mind to the new Scorsese flick, The Irishman. Judging by all the award nods, the guys are going to love this one. Well, spoilers, Opie actually DID, so that’s saying something!   When Kevin takes the proverbial floor, he starts off with a winding tale of sadness and despair which is, of course, the most recent season of The Walking Dead. To be fair, it’s better than it’s been in a while, but still follows the same old tone it always has. After burning through that one, he catches up on his actual service, Hulu, for the new series Reprisal. Its an odd bit of crazy, and its only one episode, but it gets a solid review.   Opie finishes us off on Amazon Prime with the newest season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Most of the guys are familiar with it by this point and all give it equally strong reviews.   After the break, the guys hit up trailers such as Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Free Guy, and more!   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #streaming #bigtroubleinlittlechina #kurtrussell #scorcese #martinscorcese #theirishman #robertdeniro #alpacino #amc #thewalkingdead #twd #reprisal #abigailspencer #themarvelousmrsmaisel #mcu #blackwidow #dceu #wonderwoman #wonderwoman1984 #freeguy #ryanreynolds #mulan

  • 34.Christmas in David's Garage
The Thanksgiving holiday presented a pair of challenges for the guys. We needed a new place record this week and Alex was stuck in traffic at the Grapevine. Thankfully, our previous mystery guest, David, was able to step up on both counts. His garage was a great space for recording and stepped in for Alex this week with no prep and filled the role to perfection.   Jumping in to their streaming picks, Opie took this opportunity to not watch anything on Hulu… He does get deeper into The Morning Show on AppleTV+ and also watches the first few episodes of See and thoroughly enjoys that, also. Over on Disney+ he also squeezes in the first episode of The World According to Jeff Goldblum.   Pete had Netflix this week and watched, well, just about everything. He watched the entire season of Merry Happy Whatever, which Kevin also watched some of. They had differing opinions, so have a listen to see where they fall. He also caught the new animated Christmas feature Klaus. He also took in the documentary series’ The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us. After all that, he also managed to also watch Shazaam on HBO.   Kevin took to HBO and watched the first few episodes of His Dark Materials. He talks about it briefly, likening it to a kids version of Game of Thrones. He also took his turn on AppleTV+ and watched the new M. Night Shyamalan series, Servant.   Alex was assigned his favorite service, Amazon Prime, this week, but since he was unable to participate, David had free license to review anything he wanted (because the guys are usually so good at following the rules). He watched Stumptown, which Pete and Kevin had watched before so they got to run through that again with a fresh set of eyes. He also watched the Netflix series Daybreak. He describes it as a teen comedy/drama in the vein of MadMax in high school.   After the break, the guys get all Christmas on your a$$es!! The guys throw down some of their favorite Christmas movies of all time. They also take the time to discuss movies that may or may not be Christmas movies, the most famous of which is Die Hard. Listening to this episode should help all listeners build a definitive Christmas movie list for the rest of the holidays. • 33. Guess who hates Frozen? (Hint: It's not Opie)
In what feels like a monumental achievement, the guys get together for a second week in a row. If you didn’t believe in holiday magic before, this ought to do it for you. That being said, the guys came in with absolutely no clue how to follow directions and thus we get to see what chais truly is. This is like the Black Friday of episodes.   Opie kicks it off by being just the first of many who cannot watch their assigned networks. Instead, he gives us a breakdown of the continuing insanity that is the most recent season of South Park. For those of us behind on this show, it’s a hilarious breakdown of what we’re missing.   Usually we jump right to the next person for streaming picks, but Opie saw Frozen II this week. Yeah, he liked it... blah, blah, blah. But in this episode we had the shocking revelation that one of the guys hates Frozen. It appears there is a group of rebels out there that agree with him. We have begun an inquest to find these rabble rousers so they can be extinguished by the Disney police…   After this disgusting display, Alex goes on and talks about watching Seinfeld as one of his streaming picks. He’s been burning through it and lets us know it still holds up. He also watched a film on Netflix called The King and gave it a strong recommendation. He also continues our slow review of Apple TV+ offerings by giving the Jason Momoa joint, See, a glowing review.   Pete, takes on another new, non-traditional, service with Disney+ and waxes nostalgic about the cult classic dark cartoon, Gargoyle’s. This leads to an ever brief discussion on what older afternoon cartoons were better.   Kevin attempted to stay on task by watching The Rain on Netflix. He only made it through 2 episodes far with a Luke warm review so far. He then derailed and not only went to the wrong service, but also to a show he’s discussed before and reviewed the last season of The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime. This one came back with much more favorable reviews than The Rain.   Lastly, Kevin and Alex lead the charge on a brief discussion of the insane deals win the Playstation Store for Black Friday. Some of the best games to have graced the system in the last several years are on sale for $10 this week. If you haven’t played The Last of Us or Horizon: Zero Dawn, now is your chance to get an absolute steal!   Most episodes, we’d take a break here and come back with something really fun after the break. This week, because we were so chaotic, we decided it would be the perfect time for you to hear the second half of the show that time forgot. You will hear us play a trivia game with our friend/guest David. Someday, we’ll have him back on and Pete won’t erase him from the show’s history… Sorry Dave. We love you, brother!   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #southpark #frozen #frozen2  #frozenhater #seinfeld #theking #thekingnetflix #appletvplus #see #jasonmomoa #disneyplus #gargolyes #afterschoolcartoons #therain #themaninthehighcastle #psn #playstation #blackfriday #lastofus #horizonzerodawn #uncharted #godofwar #SentfrommyiPhone

About All Pop, No Culture

From the publisher's feed

Our first 81 episodes are what we now consider APNC 1.0 with our original crew: Opie, Pete, Kevin, Alex, and later, David. Through the onset of COVID and life changes, the podcast began to evolve. It was the end of an era, but we loved this crew and the memories we made. You'll notice that our earliest episodes are not on YouTube. The addition of video was never in the plans, but came to life as a surprise side effect of COVID.
