  • 32. Did you miss us?
Well, guys, we did it. We found out how to show up together and make a podcast. Like a normal group of non-idiots. Look at us, we’re maturing. Getting back into the swing, the guys kick it off with a brief explanation of what happened last week and then Kevin and Opie give their review of Terminator: Dark Fate. Spoiler Alert, they didn’t love it… On the upside, Alex took his lady love to see Ford vs Ferrari and gave that one a strong review. Sadly, Pete brings us crashing back to earth by admitting that he saw The Addams Family. If this was baseball, our average would be awesome…   The guys then jump right into their streaming picks for the week. Pete had Hulu and started off with a review of Stumptown. His glowing review was tempered slightly by Kevins review, which still didn’t make it an outright stinker, so we’ll call this one a win for Pete. He also watched Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, but said he wouldn’t watch the second season so there’s that…   Alex flips it over to HBO and starts to watch the last season of Silicon Valley. Turns out he’s to that original as all the guys are on board with this one and we have another solid review.   Kevin had Prime this time around and blew through season 2 of Jack Ryan. If you enjoyed season one, as he did, you are likely to enjoy season 2. Did he say more than that about it? Yup. Wanna know what he said? Listen to the episode!   On Netflix, Opie found BoJack Horseman, a show all the guys have heard of and none have watched. The being said, the review is solid and everyone is now more interested than they were before this episode began!   After the break, the guys go all in on the new streaming services, Disney+ and Apple TV+. That’s very plus-y, isn’t it? As the guys talk about the services and what’s to come, the conversation ends up on Star Wars, as it so often does with nerds. The Mandalorian is the hot topic everywhere and the guys have nothing but great things to say about that one, also.   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #terminator #terminatordarkfate #fordvsferrari #mattdamon #christianbale #addamsfamily #stumptown #cobiesmulders #dirkgently #siliconvalley #jackryan #tomclancy #bojackhorseman #adultswim #disneyplus #themandalorian #appletvplus #themorningshow #stevecarrell #jenniferanniston

  • Episode 31ish

You may have noticed that there was no episode last week. Long story short, we thought we recorded an episode and had a technical failure. Short story long… listen to the episode as we will definitely not let this one go. Anyways, getting back to the issue at hand… This week, the guys invite a special guest, our own horror movie expert, Michelle. But before they let her unload her pearls of wisdom, they start with their streaming picks.   Alex kicks the week off with Netflix and watches the new Paul Rudd driven gem, Living With Yourself. Opie chimes in, having seen a few episodes himself and they agree that this show is pretty solid and definitely worth a watch.   Next up, Pete gives his life over to HBO and proceeds to finish up The Righteous Gemstones, The Watchmen, and The Deuce. Judging by the volume of the shows he watched, and their respective content, we have to assume he is now living out of a hotel and is no longer allowed to see the children. That being said, all off the shows came away with very favorable reviews.   Opie goes Prime this week and watches the rotoscoped series, Undone. It’s a darkly whimsical take of a woman who sounds crazy and sees things no one can, like her dead dad. But he loves. And Opie didn’t hate the show itself, so that’s another positive nod this week.   Kevin finishes out the streaming picks with Hulu, where he watches the JJ Abrams/Stephen King joint, Castle Rock. Having read all of King’s books, he is clearly biased but is very much enjoying season two of this show. And horror expert Michelle gets to weigh in also, with a second positive review of the show   Before the guys cut to break, they quickly discussed the future of Star Wars as it pertains to the new trailers released for this week, The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There are very mixed opinions here and worth a listen. We’d also love to hear some fan input on these files/shows so find us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and share your thoughts.   After the break we get to the meat and potatoes of this episode. Just in time for Halloween the gang shares some of their favorite horror movies and discuss said movies. Between the five of them, they discuss over 30 films, some obscure and some well know. Again, we’d love to hear what movies get your Halloween juices flowing, so let us know!     #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #halloween #scary #scarymovies #horror #paulrudd #livingwithyourself #therighteousgemstones #johngoodman #dannymcbride #thewatchmen #thedeuce #jamesfranco #maggiegyllenhall #undone #castlerock #misery #salemslot #stephenking #jjabrams #lizziecaplan #starwars #episode9 #theriseofskywalker #themandalorian DeleteSpam Actions Mark as Unread Mark as Read Star Clear Star Archive Deleted Message... • 30. Alex is Back-ish
Episode 30 - Alex is back-ish   Alex is back this week and the episode is nothing short of explosive. Not like toe curling, eyes rolling back in your head explosive, but literal explosions. Alex’s new digs come with some unexpected side effects and the guys have a good laugh about it.   The guys start off with their streaming picks this week. Opie starts it off with a review of the Larry David joint, Clear History on HBO. As per the usual, he picked something of quality that he would recommend to everyone.   Next up, Kevin goes to Netflix and watches two things. First off, he takes a stumble down memory lane with El Camino, the Breaking Bad follow up film. He also watched the first episode of The Politician, the latest from show runner Ryan Murphy. Uncharacteristically, both shows get a recommendation from Kevin this week!   Next, we join Alex in LA via Skype and he gives us a slight mixed review of the Joaquin Phoenix film, The Sisters Brothers. With it co-starring John C Reilly, it has to be a comedy, right? Right?!? Listen and find out, but it does come away with a recommendation from Alex   Over on Amazon Prime, Pete watches The Image Revolution. After a quick hazing over the name, he quickly wins over the gang by appealing to their deep nerd roots. And in some form of miracle, the gang agrees that Pete made a solid pick for once. On top of that, the entire gang finished a week where they can all recommend what they watched!   After the break, the guys discuss a handful of recent movie trailers: The Jungle Cruise, Onward, and Dolittle. The reviews are a little mixed with varying degrees of interest. After that, the guys, with Alex back, take one last run at The Room by discussing the film, The Disaster Artist. During this discussion, we finally find Alex coming around to the appeal of the original film. All in all, this night was a BLAST. That pun will really make sense if you just listen to the show. • 29. Back in the USA
Aaanndd… we’re back! After an extended vacation, the guys are back in the studio. Between Kevin travelling and Alex deciding that SoCal is where his mind’s at, scheduling has been less than ideal. As it turns out, Alex still has better things to do than entertain you. Something about petting a kitty…    Without Alex, the guys shake of the rust and go straight into what they’ve been watching over their extended break. Having spent the equivalent of an entire day on a plane, but access to video, Kevin watched a handful of recent releases: Stuber, MIB: International, Yesterday, Aladdin, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and Pet Semetary. It was a lot of work, but he did it for you, dammit!   Opie has considerably more focus and sticks to the streaming services. On HBO he manages to catch Isn’t It Romantic and the gives Fleabag a go on Amazon Prime.   Pete tackles all of network television and many of the new releases this season. Which ones? Seriously, all of them. Listen and you can tell us which ones he missed!   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #stuber #davebautista #kumailnajiani #MIB #MIBInternational #chrishemsworth #tessathompson #yesterday #himeshpatel #aladdin #willsmith #xmendarkphoenix #xmen #petsemetary #isntitromantic #rebelwilson #fleabag #abc #cbs #nbc

  • 28. Keep Your Stupid Comments In Your Pocket!
In what is one of our more bittersweet episodes, we give Alex the send off he deserves. Before the show recorded, we fed him a hearty meal to slow him down and then sat him down to watch the Tommy Wiseau masterpiece, The Room. If you haven’t seen this film, you are probably better for it. That said, go grab a few friends and give it a try. It is legitimately awful but it is definitely an experience. As you can imagine, Alex was very damaged after having watched this film and the subsequent discussion did nothing to alleviate the pain. We send him to SoCal a well broken man!   Of course the guys also had their weekly streaming picks. In lieu of streaming, Alex decided to prepare for the wretchedness of The Room by catching The Return of the King in the local theater. Not much to say about this one, other than watching the directors cut of this in the theater means he probably had a catheter in just hours before recording…   Pete takes in the not-quite-documentary Wu-Tang: An American Saga on Hulu. He loved it, so that gives you a pretty good idea what level of interest the rest of the group has… In his defense, its sitting at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes so you might be ok checking this one out.   This week, Kevin throws the rules in the trash. First, he sort of follows the rules by starting the series The Widow on Amazon Prime. After just one episode, the review is pretty middling, but what can you expect when the fool cant follow directions. His first foray into dumping the rules has him watching the first episode of The I-Land on Netflix. This meets with horrendous reviews, as so many of Kevin’s Sci-Fi reviews do. Finally, he kicks the dumpster fire he’s created over and jumps ship to YouTube, where he takes in Retro Replay with Nolan North and Troy Baker. He finally gives a stellar review, but what kind of idiot has to got that far for fun?   Lastly, Opie hits up Netflix for Bill Burr’s latest stand up special, Paper Tigers. With a couple of the guys having seen it, there is a little discussion but the consensus is that this is a quality show and well worth a watch!   Rumor has it next week may be an off week, but keep your eyes open for any curveballs we may or may not throw at you!   Music:  I Did Not-Tommy Wiseau (TheRoom) Remix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwB7fGTFq6c   Songinfy The Room (You're Tearing Me Apart) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttKn1eGKTew     #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #theroom #tommywiseau #thelordoftherings #thereturnoftheking #wutangclan #wutanganamericansaga #theWidow #katebeckinsale #theiland #retroreplay #troybaker #nolannorth #billburr #papertigers

  • It's Sports Ball Season!!
Episode 27 This week takes the guys into a realm rarely covered in pop culture: SPORTS! Thats right, the elation of NFL’s opening Sunday has the guys in an athletic mood. Except Alex. He thinks sports ball is lame. The guys run down a massive list of movies in all of the major sports and breakdown which were winners and which were losers. The real winners here are the guys, as they have a great time going off on tangents. The losers? Well, probably the listeners. But you don’t listen for the insights, right?   Of course, before we get to the big game, the guys go through their streaming picks this week. Opie changes things up and actually watches something on Amazon Prime. He gives The Spy Who Dumped me a relatively lukewarm review which isn’t that bad, knowing how discerning he can be!   Alex takes to Netflix and watches the latest Dave Chapelle special, Sticks & Stones. The latest from Mr. Chapelle gets a strong review and the guys give a shoutout to a few of his other Netflix offerings as well.   Pete takes to HBO for a religious experience. The Righteous Gemstones is his choice for the week. The John Goodman and Danny McBride led show is an exciting new addition to the HOB universe.   Finally, Kevin gets in his way back machine and blows through the first season of Don’t Trust the B* in Apartment 23 on Hulu. As a fan of Kristyn Ritter, he finds the show to be an angry persons delight!   Enjoy this weeks show. Next week will be a real treat, as we are finally forcing Alex to watch the cinematic masterpiece, The Room.   #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #thespywhodumpedme #milakunis #katemckinnon #davechapelle #sticksandstones #therighteousgemstones #johngoodman #dannymcbride #adamdevine #donttrustthebinapt23 #krystenritter #jamesvanderbeek #sports #sportsmovies #football #baseball #hockey #basketball

  • Ep 26. Can Open, Worms Everywhere
Once again Sam is back with guys this week. Sadly, she sits in complete silence as Pete takes her mic. That’s right, they DID put Baby in the corner. That said, with Sam still cheering them on like the worlds tiniest mime, the guys somehow have way too much fun. This is like an episode of Seinfeld: it’s an episode about nothing and some people will still find it funny!   This week in streaming pics, Pete starts is off with a rare find - something people should actually watch! On Netflix, he’s found The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons from a Mythical Man. Of course he then Pete’s it by also watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.   Kevin hits HBO and gives Mortal Engines a shot. Life lesson: don’t give Mortal Engines a shot. Next he discusses a quiet gem in Can You Ever Forgive Me? starring Melissa McCarthy.   Alex, with two weeks under his belt, manages to only watch Carnival Row on Amazon Prime. And yeah, that came out at the end of his two week window. What a slacker...   And what did Opie watch on Hulu you ask? Nothing. In two weeks he watched nothing. We really need to get him a streaming chaperone or something...   After the break, the guys tear into the latest Terminator: Dark Fate trailer and then bathe in the glory of the latest Joker trailer. They then finish off the show with a bargain basement movie trivia game that, while being as basic as a pumpkin spice latte, turned out to be a ton of fun!    #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill  #amazonprime #hulu #popculture #movies #television #streaming #billmurray #thebillmurraystories #johnnydepp #charlieandthechocolatefactory #timburton #mortalengines #melissamccarthy #canyoueverforgiveme #carnivalrow #caradelavigne #orlandobloom #Jamescameron #terminator #terminatordarkfate #joaquinphoenix #joker #jokermovie #dc #dccomics

  • 25. Episode 25 - The Revenge of the Sony
Pete is out this week, so Sam steps in to fill his place. Is it fortuitous timing? Is it related to a restraining order? Legally, we can’t say why they aren’t in the same place at the same time, but everyone agrees that Sam is great.    With Pete out, presumably incarcerated, the gang forgoes the usual streaming picks and cover some random watches this week. After that, they get out their whooping sticks and immediately start beating the dead horse that is Disney v. Sony - The Case of the Homeless Spider.    When the gang is done bringing that conversation to a definitive and permanent close (yeah, right), they get into everything else that came out of D23. There is a lot of Marvel and Star Wars talk and some more Disney+ talk. Enjoy!   And for all the Pete fans out there (James?), he’ll be back next week, unless the diabetes finishes it’s work.

  • 24. Back to Business as Usual
The guys are back together after a hiatus, and none too soon. We’re out of outtake clips, as you may have noticed by the end (middle?) of last episode. But we digress...   Without wasting time (that you know of...) the guys jump into streaming picks for the week. Pete starts off with a trip down Obscurity Lane by watching CBGB on Amazon Prime. Alex goes next and introduces himself to the world of Brooklynn Nine-Nine on Hulu. Kevin takes advantage of the two week stretch to watch two series on Netflix. First there’s the disappointing Another Life but he is then redeemed by kicking off Money Heist (Casa de Papel). Opie finishes the segment by telling us about Hard Knocks on HBO.   Once they finish with that mess, the guys move on to some current going’s on surrounding the new Mulan movie and the Birds of Prey film. After the break, the guys lean into the Star Wars news that been trickling down over the last couple of weeks as we get ready for D23, Disney’s big conference. Take a seat and enjoy a show that feels almost as structured as last weeks, but is completely outtake free! (Almost, listen all the way to the end...)

About All Pop, No Culture

From the publisher's feed

Our first 81 episodes are what we now consider APNC 1.0 with our original crew: Opie, Pete, Kevin, Alex, and later, David. Through the onset of COVID and life changes, the podcast began to evolve. It was the end of an era, but we loved this crew and the memories we made. You'll notice that our earliest episodes are not on YouTube. The addition of video was never in the plans, but came to life as a surprise side effect of COVID.
