Actor Alvina August was born and raised in Zimbabwe. A strained relationship with her father led her and her mother to Canada prior to her attending University, on a path to being a doctor. But as life as a doctor came closer to being a reality, something within her balked. A powerful singer, her friend submitted a tape to Canadian Idol and she was one of five Canadians selected to audition. That went no further, but the realization that a life in the Arts was a possibility planted the seeds for what has eventually followed: she is a regular fixture on television who can currently be seen on NBC's Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, exhibiting the pipes that got her there. Being mixed race, she weighs in on the challenges of differing skin color and moving halfway across the world only to realize that her biggest journey is the one to discover herself.
