  • The Emerging Role of Blood Tests in Improving Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

The Emerging Role of Blood Tests in Improving Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

Lori La Bey explores the new path of utilizing blood tests to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.  She speaks with two professionals in the industry and one person living with dementia but also received several questions from our audience that she will be asking our panel as well.

Dr. Teodora Stoica is a Medical Science Liaison for ALZpath, an Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis company. With her strong neuroscience and science communication background, Teodora provides valuable resources to clinicians regarding ALZpath's products, namely ALZpathDx, a simple blood test available now that tests for Alzheimer's pathology in the brain.

Dr. Lawren Vandevrede is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at UCSF and his goal is to provide outstanding clinical care to patients with cognitive problems and their loved ones. His clinical and research interests are in advancing the care of patients with neurodegenerative disorders, either through the development of novel therapeutics or increasing our understanding of the disease process.

Ginger Smith is living with dementia and has stepped into an activist and advocate role speaking her truth about living with dementia and raising awareness for all dealing with it. She regularly participates in Dementia Chats educational videos sponsored by Alzheimer’s Speaks as well as many other organizations.

    Learn:

    1. Is the blood test just for Alzheimer’s disease or all different forms of dementia?
    2. What does the blood test look at?
    3. Is it a finger prick or a test tube of blood?
    4. What is the theory behind the diagnosis?
    5. Wasn’t the Amyloid Plaque Theory disproved years ago? Why do we keep hearing about this?
    6. How accurate is the test?
    7. What is the benefit of early diagnosis?
    8. How will this affect my medical insurance, driving, and independence in the future?
    9. Will there be additional tests in the future once diagnosed?
    10. Is this test covered by insurance?
    11. What is the turnaround time for the test?
    12. Will there be counseling associated with positive results for patients?

  • Dementia is No Match for a Daughter’s Determination

Dementia is no match for a daughter’s determination

Lori La Bey talks with Dr. Helena Popovic MD who is an Australian family physician and 10-year care partner for her father who had both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. She has written two best-selling books about their adventure with dementia, and she teaches health professionals, people living with dementia, and their families about brain health and dementia prevention.

Dr. Popovic graduated from the University of Sydney, Australia, and her philosophy is that education is more powerful than medication. She believes anyone can boost their brain and grow bolder rather than older.

    Learn:

    2. Band-Aid Solutions vs Root Cause Issues
    3. Dementia is a Starting Point, Not an End Point
    4. Purpose and Engagement
    5. The Power of Volunteering
