An Innie or an Outie: Does It Really Matter?

Listen Later

Is your baby’s belly button an innie or an outie? Does it really matter? The answer, surprisingly, is yes!

The differences between innies and outies extend beyond simple aesthetics, and outie bellybuttons are specifically associated with a number of health challenges for young babies. Having an outie belly button often goes hand-in-hand with a variety of physical symptoms, which may include trouble burping, trouble latching, and reflux issues.

This episode focuses on the prominent outie belly buttons that are generally seen in the very young newborn stage, usually between the ages of one week and five months. These bellybuttons tend to balloon out during the times when the baby is straining to poop or to pass gas.

If you’re the parent of a baby with an outie — or a practitioner who regularly works with newborns — then this is an episode you won’t want to miss!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  1. The collection of symptoms that may be expected alongside an outie belly button
  2. One possible anatomical explanation behind the specific symptoms and challenges associated with outies
  3. What you can do to help a little one who may be dealing with a herniated belly button
