Andréa McBride: Storming The Wine Industry

Listen Later

Andréa McBride is the co-founder of McBride Sisters Wines — the first African-American sister duo to found an establish a wine company. Together with her sister Robin, the McBride sisters are on a mission to transform the wine industry, and cultivate community, one delicious glass of wine at a time.

Their inspiring "SHE CAN FUND" is helping close the gender and race gap in leadership positions in male dominated fields by providing professional development scholarships and grants to emerging women leaders.

What we discuss in this episode:

  • It's been a long journey to establish and grow the McBride Sister's collection wine business, however, Andréa explains that greatness is a team sport. It requires a village, it requires a great deal of people who believe in your vision, resilience and passion.
  • Andréa explains how she got from point A to point B; the person who has been able to take on the interesting, challenging journey with all of its twists and turns.
  • David asks what Andréa was like as a child to understand how she became who she is today.
  • Winning and getting results is great, but the older she gets, Andréa loves the learning that comes from pursuing her life's work. She hates to lose and it's that competitive spirit that keeps her on her toes, constantly seeking growth.
  • Andréa shares what it took to stand out in the male-dominated wine industry with her award-winning winery McBride Sisters. It required freedom to dream big, and the desire to serve their audience better than any other wine company out there.
  • There is opportunity for those who are willing to go above and beyond for their customers. Each industry has a segment of the market that gets ignored, or that the incumbent companies have not served well. By addressing those issues, and having the desire to figure them out can set your company apart from the competition.
  • "I don't go where I'm supposed to go, I go where I don't belong because I know I will someday."
  • David shares his serious belief that what got us here (where you are today), won't get us to where we want to go tomorrow. Andréa shares that practicing the fundamentals of the plan have remained consistent but the sophistication and the expansion is what has leveled up.
  • Andréa explains that promoting a business today is much easier than in the past. The next generation of entrepreneurs have so many tools at their fingertips that make the barrier to entry much lower than ever before.
  • Access to information can make things difficult for entrepreneurs. That's one of the factors that led to Andréa and her sister creating a fund that helps other talented people get the information they need to succeed.
