Half the Sky is an award winning national bestseller written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. In October, WHRO will present a two night documentary based on the book which explores oppression that women worldwide face, and how they turn that oppression into opportunity and hope. The documentary examines issues such as forced prostitution, gender-based violence, maternal mortality and sex trafficking. These three major events meant critical changes for Virginia - because of them the colony transformed from a small settlement of white men, to one that contained black and white families, who, along with Native Americans, would create America.
